unpopular players
In my online league, I noticed that Gil Meche has a popularity rating of "Disliked" for both local and national levels. I have never noticed this before nor have I ever seen it anywhere else. How often do you see disliked ratings? Anybody have experience with this? Will my fans get excited if I get rid of him?

Not true in my experience. I had one player, a perennial MVP and gold glove CF, with no PED suspensions, indeed no suspensions at all, who was disliked his entire career.

The only player I've noticed as being "Disliked" was after he was suspended ten games for arguing/fighting - can't remember which.

I don't believe Reggie Jackson was ever liked. Last edited by StyxNCa; 07-30-2010 at 09:56 AM. |

I saw a guy in a feeder league draft once that was disliked. I have no idea if he got suspended or whatnot in the feeder league.

I noticed
that after a year with the Nationals in my dynasty Elijah Dukes has gone from "disliked" to "extremely popular". Maybe a political career is in the offing?

Wrong! Reggie Jackson was my childhood hero. I was 12 years old in 1977 the year that he joined the Yanks! We loved him here in New York! Reggie candy bars was a favorite here!

There's a difference between loving a player as a player and loving them as a person. As a huge Redskins fan, back in the first Joe Gibbs era, I loved Joe Theismann as a QB but couldn't stand him as a person. It's the "person" part that disrupts locker rooms and such, not the athlete part.

In fact, I remember as a 17 year old attending the game back in 1982 where came back to Yankee Stadium as an Angel and we gave him a standing ovation. Reggie was the man! If you're not a longtime Yankee fan you wouldn't understand. Or an A's fan for that matter! I'm speaking from my personal experience growing up in Brooklyn as a Yankee fan in the 70's. Believe me they would not have given him his own candy bar if he was not popular here in New York and throughout baseball at that time.

Okay, StyxNCa, I think we all get that you can't stand Reggie Jackson. That doesn't mean he wasn't popular.
But to parlay that into a segue. . . . Has anyone run across a player who is largely Disliked, but Popular or better locally? (Obviously Barry Bonds is only one real life example.) What about players who are nationally Unknown, but Popular or Disliked locally? My favorite example of this is from the Giants of the late 70s/early 80s: Johnny LeMaster, who is forever known to Giants fans as Johnny Disaster. How bad was it for Johnny? At one point he was so tired of being booed that he flipped off Candlestick Park with both hands from his post at shortstop, in the middle of a game. |

Hurray for ad hominem attacks.
Or, well, whatever the equivalent is for cities, seeing as "hominem" implies a person. Seriously, StycNCa, you're arguing like a moron.

Reggie Jackson analogous to the mob? Typical anti-Yankee sentiment..
