All-Star Game

I can only imagine that they are scrambling to put in some sort of tribute at the All-Star game tonight.

Every story needs an antagonist, and every great antagonist is the protagonist of his own story. As a Red Sox fan who grew up with the heartbreak of watching Steinbrenner's Yankees win time and time again, I must say this: I didn't like the man. At times, I hated him, thought he was a lying, stinking blowhard. But he deserves respect for the teams he assmebled and the legacy he leaves. The Boss was truly the protagonist of his own story. RIP, big man. Gonna miss booing you.

Bought the team for 8 million and now it is worth 1.6 billion and the most important franchise in sports. That is a fulfilled life.

In a heartwarming tale, I hear Steinbrenner removed his black helmet and told Hal "I'm your father" before passing.

Are you under some sort of calzone restraining order?

No, I'm at work. Also, I'm not entirely sure where to buy a calzone in Sydney.

That's what I was coming here to say. Leave it to the showman in George to die on the day of the All-Star Game to get maximum media coverage!

Nice one, thom.

This was a respectable comment from an opposing fan. Thanks. P.S., some of us Yankee fans have felt the same way about him at times!

Just get some pizza dough, mozzarella, marinara sauce and your fav fillings and fold it over. Its not too hard to make.

He'll still be dead when you get home so I think thats a great idea.

If we're going with the Star Wars analogies, George Steinbrenner is Emperor Palpatine, not Darth Vader.

True, but the helmet was easier to visualize than the lightning from the fingers

My first reply (thread's first reply) was before the story changed for the worse, but the thread title's been changed making my statement seem kinda odd.

Rest in Peace for a Legend of the game.

I offer this chart to make a couple of points:
  1. George's reign has not been universally successful. There were some mighty lean years in the 80's and early 90's.
  2. However, he can be considered a highly effective owner given his overall track record, an impression greatly enhanced by all of the success of recent seasons.
Man, it hits me... This guy owned my favorite team for most of my adult life. That's saying something, considering my first recollections as a young Yankees fan go all the way back to 1965 (ironically, the first year of that terrible dry spell under CBS mis-management).

On the day The Boss died, the Yankees were worth a billion plus, the AL All-Stars were studded Yankees, and the Yankees were in first place.

That's a win.

dam, rough week in yankee universe. first we lose The Voice, now The Boss.

Altho I wasn't a fan of him buying someo f the stars he has over the recent years, I always loved him as an owner for doing EVERYTHING in his power for the win, no matter what the costs. As much as you might not have liked his methods, there was no questioning his desire to win no matter what.

RIP

And that is what has really rankled non-Yankee fans over the years. Although I wish they would have more tact and restraint at times, I can't blame them to some extent. It must be frustrating for some of them when they compare their more frugal owners to the extravagances of the Steinbrenner family. At times it's bothered me too, the thought of "buying championships" by throwing money at free agents until something works. Except at trophy presentation time, that is.

Good thing he hang around to see his new ballpark, 2009 WS title brought to NY.
To me, he was THE Yankees, no matter who play for the team, who manage the team. He was the most passionate in the ballpark about the game, and he was an unbelievably successful businessman who really loved and enjoyed what he did.
I think every baseball fan must have hoped at least once to have an owner like him for his/her team. I know I did.

RIP, George.

I know the calzone is from Seinfeld, but the truth was that Steinbrenner loved White Castle burgers, which explains WHY he had a bad heart

Eat nothing that one of the sizes is 'sackful'
