Jackson just seems like a buy low sell high candidate for Billy Beane (as stated before). He tried to do similar with Matt Holliday. Getting Holliday from the Rockies... then trying to trade him for more. It didn't quite work but then we could be looking at Conor Jackson in Atlanta being our LF next season if Beane is looking for relievers. I mean... he gave up an average arm to get Jackson. Anything more than a single average arm and it's a profit to him. We'd offer a major league arm and a minor leaguer and I think we can have him and Beane might even send us a million dollars to cover the salary.
or, you know, he could just keep the guy since they needed a competent left fielder.

It just doesn't work that way. Jackson is what the A's wanted.
Yea, that is the concept I want him to expand on a bit more. I have never quite heard of that reasoning before.

I can't believe we were in 1st place a couple weeks ago. Have we won a game since?

I mean, bases loaded, nobody out. Gross hits a soft looping liner to Brandon Phillips, who alertly lets it drop in front of him, and he forces out the runner at home, and the catcher throws to third, and the third baseman tags out the runner, double play. The only way it wasn't a triple play is because Miguel Cairo wasted time tagging out Suzuki instead of just stepping on third and throwing to second.

But no infield fly rule called. This **** happens to the A's.

But I'm certainly not blaming the umps for the A's horribleness. It's just **** like this. Hit the ****ing ball out of the ****ing infield for once.

Thank goodness the Pirates came to town. We needed a win streak in a bad way and yes I'm counting two games as a streak at this point.

Make that three, after a game we had no business winning. Thanks, Pirates.

(BUMP)

It's July, and in the baseball world that means you have to pour teams into two buckets: buyers and sellers.

After getting swept by the Yankees, there isn't much doubt that they are sellers. That just leaves what are they most likely to give up. -At this point I wouldn't put it past Billy to get rid of anybody, but some pieces hit that sweet spot of talent, affordable, and expendable.

The only one I can see going is Mr. Crisp. Err, that is if he actually stays healthy for 2 weeks in a row. I guess the other obvious one is Benji Sheets. For some reason, I don't think Big Ben is going anywhere. Call it a gut feeling, but he hasn't proved enough for anyone to want him, and really the A's need some filler innings in their starting rotation. -Unless they want to try Tyson Ross in inning number 1. Iick.

What does everybody else think?

Crisp likely stays.

Sheets likely goes. He's been a pretty solid innings eater, while basically learning how to pitch again, and will probably be a 2nd or 3rd target after Cliff Lee is traded.

Also I'd be very surprised if someone didn't toss a decent B level prospect for him assuming Oakland covered the rest of his contract this year. Think Kotsay to Atlanta for Devine, etc.

I could see Ellis and Weurtz dealt, and possibly Breslow too.

I think Cliff Lee being traded so early (if today's Rangers reports are true) is good for the A's, as the best available SP is off the board. I'm praying Sheets has a good outing this weekend to establish a little value.

Re: Breslow

I think the A's value him more than most teams do and I don't see him being traded.

Did we sign him to a 2 year deal? Or just the one?

What do you guys think of Billy Beane as a GM? How about your owners? I'm just reading Moneyball now (trying to read more than just half of the book this time) and was just curious.

Breslow is exactly the type that teams look for. Solid lefty out of the pen, etc. Think of guys like George Sherrill and Will Ohman.

Oakland is great at finding guys like him.

I hope we get something for him, but I have an odd feeling that there aren't many teams interested. Since Anderson, Duke, & Braden are out, I would think that we'd at least wait until someone is back to make a trade.

Unless Billy wants to move Ross to a starter and see a lot more of Mortensen.

For some reason I thought it was a 1 year deal. Yea, that makes it more unlikely that we get rid of him.

Ross was already sent down to Triple A to stretch back out as a starter.

Also, the Phillies apparently sent a scout to Sheets' last start.
