What should I do?
I'm ready to start a new solo game and I can't make up my mind, so choose for me. How should I play?

Fictional, makes it harder with less chance of you knowing what players will be like also throw in stats only.

I prefer playing with the MLB league structure and its players, but I can see how fictional leagues can appeal to some people. Personally, I think you can have the best of both worlds when you play with MLB using real rosters because you'd be rest assured that in 15-20 years, the league will be full of fictional players/coaches... but in order to get to that point, you'll still be able to play through the 'real' MLB.

This time around, I did MLB but released all players and did a fantasy draft... it's been a blast!

Since I designed my first fictional league, I've never gone back to playing any real-life league. It's fun to have a universe that you can do anything you want with, and not have to worry about it meshing with the real-life idea of the MLB.

I always play with a real world league structure and real logos and stuff, but I use fictional players.

I like both real MLB and fictional, so I have one of each going. But if I had to choose one over the other, I don't think I could.

What should you do? You should decide for yourself.

A fun option is to start out at a low-level manager position say in A ball, or Rookie ball.
It is quite a challenge because the parent club GM is continuously moving players so day to day you don't know what you will have to work with. After some time you get offers to manage other teams either in your organization or another. |

I'm a big fan of MLB + fictional players. I just make the changes that if I was commisioner I would make.
I rotate interleague games like the NFL. AL East plays NL East one year, NL Central the next, and then the NL West and then repeat. I use a 100m salary cap in my league. I moved the Astros to the AL West to make it a even 15 teams in both leagues with 3 divisions of 5. Then I rollback time but use moddern settings and start my league the year the first world series happened which is 1903. Then I sim one game at a time. I set my line ups and rotations. |

oman19: that is a cool idea. I always start in 1901 but I like to try your idea. Do you use oldtime players, current rosters or just fictional?
I am going to do this but move Rookies to the AL West then move the Astros to NL West. I think Rookies are more like an AL team. Last edited by kev24fan; 06-21-2010 at 01:05 PM. |

Thanks I like the way the league works for me. I use fictional players. Just think fictional makes it harder and I won't drive myself crazy when Babe Ruth doesn't play like Babe Ruth.

I've gone the fictional route. Which I believe OOTP is basically all about. Lately, I built my own 1950s league, 16 teams, with customized logos and uniforms. I prefer having fewer organizations to deal, as well as the lighter micro-management with the high stamina pitching staffs.
Here are two of my teams; the New York Nitros and the Colorado Rapids: |

MLB actually does this itself, though its rotation of interleague games is complicated by the fact it retains the 'traditional rivals' matchups each year.

You know LGO I'm glad you said that. When MLB first introduced interleague play I thought for sure I remember them saying that they were going to use a format like the NFL's. Then I think they decided to go the route to ensure you see Yankees vs Mets, White Sox vs Cubs, Dodger vs Angels, A's vs Giants etc.
Did they decide to go with the regional rivalry idea every year after they saw it was popular the first year or was that the plan all along? For some reason I seem to remember that they decided to go with the regional rivalry thing after the fact. Last edited by oman19; 06-21-2010 at 02:49 PM. |

When interleague play was first started, it paired up the same divisions from each league, e.g. East vs. East, Central vs. Central, and West vs. West. MLB then started rotating the interleague games between divisions in 2002, but retaining each year the 'traditional rival' matchups, e.g. Yankess vs. Mets, Cubs vs. White Sox, etc. Though of course, not every club has a 'traditional rival' which only adds another layer of complexity (and imbalance) in how interleague games are apportioned each season.
