What does this mean?
Quote from my scout's scouting report on 2B Esteban Martinez. This is from my fictional league using 1955 settings all the way around.
"Martinez is an excellent, if not elite, offensive player, who you can count on to have a solid season every year. .250/.320/.370 is not out of the realm of possibility. Could hit somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 HRs and 60 RBIs." League average OPS is about .720 so far in my league, about 40 games into a 120 game league schedule. I play stats only, so no ratings at all. So far he's hitting .244/.364/.311 in only 45 ABs (missed time with injury). So, how good is this player? Does this scouting report seem wierd, or is the scout considering a .690 OPS to be "excellent" for a middle infielder. Do these scouting reports adjust for position, schedule length, historical modifiers, or anything of that nature?? |

Maybe the scout doesn't think he'll play enough games during the season because of his injury history? Is he fragile? Otherwise, I don't know... never seen that before.

I'm 99% sure that you should always consider such scouting comments to be from a modern baseball viewpoint, as they are stock statements written to align with certain player ratings (in other words, they're not based on projected statistical output). 99% sure

The overall summaries are based on the player's star rating (or 20-80 overall rating). If in your settings, those ratings are done by position, a shortstop may end up described as an 'elite offensive player' even if he is only league average - that just means he's good for a shortstop. The overall summaries can also be somewhat misleading, since they are only determined by the overall rating - if a player's overall rating is high predominantly because of his defensive value or his speed, the text might claim he is an outstanding hitter when in reality his value lies elsewhere. So don't put too much stock in the details of those text summaries - if the text says the player is good, that is likely true, but the text might not accurately convey why he is good.

I remember one in an online league some time back that said my leadoff hitter basically sucked...even though he was projected to a .400+ OBP and SLG
