Just a final note on something that has stuck in my head from earlier in this thread.

People sometimes equate X,000 posts to fanboy status. "Fanboy" implies unreasoning, fawning, blind devotion in exchange for the possibility of condescending recognition from the game gods. No doubt there are some members like that here.

But do you really think that would be a lasting motivation to come back here and participate so often? Especially because merely doing so does not work in gaining favor? I've posted X,000 times here, and I've been ignored by the best in the business, it seems!

No, there are no rewards just for Hall of Famer posting status here. You have to get involved to be involved and to be included with the elite. You must put in sweat equity in this unique enterprise, something I never had time to do.

So, why else would there be X,000-post members? Could it be that the game is of such quality as to make them want to keep in touch with it and contribute to its community, even in just a rudimentary manner?

I've been sharply critical of OOTP at times, particularly when I did feel ignored about an issue important to me (and before I learned to not feel that way). Yet, overall, it has given me a ton of enjoyment over the years. That's why I keep coming back.

And that's why I have X,000 posts. Not because I blindly worship the game and its creators, but because it is a damned fine product. That does not make me a fanboy, but surer than heck it makes me a fan!

My point of view is a broad one. I look at the total product, how far it has come (despite occasional potholes like 2006) and how it keeps getting better every (recent

) year. I see how I keep wanting to walk away from it and how it keeps drawing me back regardless. So, I will tend to be patient with what I perceive (IMHO) to be minor problems such as "earned run scoring errors in infrequent situations."

Do I want this flaw eventually corrected? Yes. Do I feel the makers of OOTP should be "ashamed of themselves" for it? No. In any case, I won't call you a fanatic for making it a priority if you don't call me a fanboy for taking you to task when you overdo (in my opinion) your critical commentary of the entire game (and OOTP) because of it.

So please don't dismiss my opinion despite my X,000 posts. My presence here, and that of others like me, is important. Know why? Because it demonstrates deep, overall satisfaction with OOTP. The more of us here, the better the game is - it's only logical.

If I were a noob reading these boards, trying to decide whether to purchase, I would zero in on guys like me: "Gee, I see the game's not perfect, but which one is? This guy seems to like it already despite this problem they mentioned... there doesn't seem to be agreement on whether it is a problem or whether it's that important... and they are going to issue another patch anyway..."

My point is this. If I were new to this game, I would take encouragement from the number of members with X,000 posts that I see in these forums. It sure as heck says something good about OOTP.

Bruce, I couldn't have said it better myself.

The earned runs bug irritates the Hell out of me and I have posted to that effect. But what better route do I have to getting it fixed than to come here and vent my displeasure at the bug and call loudly for it to be fixed?

I once spent months ensuring that the ability to print stayed in OOTP (yes, Markus was once going to remove it completely and permanently). Why? Because this is the best baseball sim out there and it matters to me. Many of my 9k+ posts are asking for bug fixes or enhancements. And, over time, I've got 99% of them addressed and the game is better off accordingly.

We post a lot because we care a lot. I complain a lot because I want things fixed and enhanced and improved and expanded; I want OOTP to be a better game. No one who has read my adversarial posts can ever justifiably call me a fanboy, 9k+ posts or not: I am a critic. I want the game to be as close to perfect as possible one day, and I wil be here fighting for that, until the day it is.

Well said in the last two posts. The "X,000" posters are at testament to the quality and staying power of the game, in addition to their desire to improve the game.

We should have a party, Mal, when you reach 10,000 posts!
