House Rules
Hey all. I'm just wondering what house rules you apply to you're game. I don't consider myself a excellent player but I'm winning to much. Seems like I can get any FA player and my owner lets me spend spend. Money is no problem.
I know I'm not alone. Any tips? Sorry, I'm sure this has been brought up before. Thx! Have a great day! |

I discipline myself to not allow more than 10 four and five star players on my team at any time (that's total, not each). You really have to consider who you want and who you don't, what positions you want to spend your self-restricted "allotment" of 4/5 stars on, etc.

My team always has the smallest market size in the league, at least one size smaller than next closest.
I'm not allowed to claim prospects off waivers unless I have a worse minor league ranking than the originating team, as well as a worse record. |

I play with a salary cap and all market sizes equal. I also don't allow myself to touch the waiver wire.

Only 1 free agent pickup per year. No waivers. Only trades that are offered to me. I usually take on the last place team. Good times.

I don't allow myself to sign free agents better than 2 stars (so I usually just sign a veteran stopgap/utility player or two), unless I finish with the worst record in the league by at least 10 games, which is when I allow myself to sign 1 free agent over 2 stars. Also, I never allow myself to make a trade unless I would actually make the deal if I were the other GM, and I never trade for prospects unless I'm actually rebuilding. Using these house rules I have run a fictional league for 17 seasons now, GMing the same team during the span, and, while my team posted a record over .500 13 years straight, we have only won 2 championships in that span, and are at 45-65 or so now, so the house rules work.

Soft cap seems to work ok.

Stats only, of course. Beyond that I don't do any trades other than one-for-one deals, and even with those I usually try to make them fair for both sides.

Eat a contract from time to time. That happens IRL. Don't do the 2,3,4,5 for 1 trades that the AI is blind on. Match player value by team. An MR is not as valuable as an SP if the team you are trading with has few other viable SP. Put yourself as the GM of the other team and honestly determine if the player coming from the "other you" is a benefit to that team. That means you don't trade a catcher to a team that already has good catching.

Interesting to see many of the same House Rules (with slight variations) in this thread.
Mostly defaults except: 1) Waiver Wire = OFF 2) Trades = OFF 3) Stats only except "Other" is enabled 4) Two 10 team leagues like the 60's... 1 playoff spot available in each league only You'll be surprised how hard this game gets... After taking the worst team with the absolute tightest and worst owner ever born I lasted at GM 10 seasons with 2 winning seasons... I finally caved in and selected a team a bit better...

Wow! Thx for all the replies. I think my problem is with free agents. Just way to easy to get the best batter/pitcher. Maybe I'll limit myself to just 2 picks. I do very little trading but when I have a star in the last year of his contract I do trade him away. I'm done with that. No stats= no way. The game is time consuming enough.
I do want to start a salary cap though.Later all! You know I think I may have gotten lucky because my owner loves to spend money! Gotta find a tight ass owner. Last edited by Mntwins; 06-03-2010 at 08:22 PM. |

What will you do with the 2 teams left over in each league?

I use a 100m cap with the default salary levels. Revenue sharing and media contracts was the tough thing to balance so teams weren't in the red but free agents were not asking for to much. |

Stats only, financials off, trades on very hard heavily favor prospects. Its the ultimate challenge and loads of fun to play.
