Newbie question - Defense potential?

I just have a simple question - Do defensive ratings ever increase? What about the other ratings like speed and baserunning?

I can't recall ever seeing speed/baserunning/defensive abilities increase. A player's experience at a position will change, therefore making him better (or worse) at a specific position, but I don't think his overall defensive ability will improve.

Someone else may come along with proof that it does, though. I'd be interested to see that.
