1963 Reds (and beyond)

Mainly following the careers of Pete Rose and Jim Maloney. I'm going to be playing out all of Maloney's starts and simming the other games.

So far, Jim Maloney is 1-2 in his first three starts, all coming against the Pirates. Maloney gave up six runs in the first inning to Pittsburgh in his last start, but settled down allowing just one over the next seven innings. Maloney has been a strikeout machine, fanning exactly 12 in his first three starts(25 IP, 36 K)

As a team, the Reds are 8-4, thanks largely to CF Vada Pinson. The 28 year old has 8 homers & 17 RBI in the first 12 games. RF Frank Robinson is 17 for 35 to start the season.

Pete Rose is off to a slow start, just 11 for his first 45.

4/24/63
Cincinnati Reds(8-4) @ Los Angeles Dodgers(8-7)

Things started off great-- Vada Pinson hit a three run homer in the first inning and Gordy Coleman's two run shot in the third gave Maloney and the Reds a 5-1 lead headed into the 6th. However, Maloney's 137 pitch performance four days ago caught up to him, and he was exhausted after just 65 pitches. He walked two to start off the bottom of the sixth, and was relieved by Jim Bronson. Bronson couldn't get out of the jam, and two more runs were charged to Maloney. In the end, the Reds bullpen blew the 5-1 lead and the Dodgers stole this one 6-1.
Maloney(ND): 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
Rose: 0/4, R, BB

4/28/63
Cincinnati Reds(10-6) @ Houston Colt. 45's(7-12)

Jim Maloney made one mistake in this game, giving up a first inning three run homer to Jimmy Wynn. He recorded his first 7 outs via strikeout, and allowed just four more hits the entire game after that first inning. The Reds bats gave Maloney no help, mustering just five hits and never getting a runner past second base. Maloney strikes out 12 for the fourth time this season. Pete Rose continues not to hit. In worse news, Frank Robinson suffered a partially torn labrum in the loss and will miss the next 3-4 months.
Maloney(L, 1-3): 8.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 12 K, HR
Rose: 0-4, K, 2 LOB(batting .215)

5/2/63
Milwaukee Braves(15-7) @ Cincinnati Reds(11-9)

Big win. Maloney did not have his best stuff, and the Reds trailed 5-3 in the bottom of the 8th--- until Gordy Coleman smacked a three run homer. Maloney was still in the game at this point, around 115 pitches thrown, and was left in to finish off the 9th. With a 6-5 lead, Maloney danced out of a first and third, one out jam to preserve his second win of the year. Pete Rose looked good, hitting a triple and a double with an RBI.
Maloney(CG, W, 2-3): 9.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 6 K
Rose: 2-4, R, 2B, 3B, RBI

5/5/63
St. Louis Cardinals(14-12) @ Cincinnati Reds(13-12)

Maloney started game two of this double-header on short rest, and only lasted five and two thirds, giving up two runs over six hits. He left with a tie game, but the Cardinals scored one in the 8th and won 3-2.

Maloney(ND): 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 8 K, HR
Rose: 1/3, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, SB

5/9/63
Cincinnati Reds(15-13) @ New York Mets(12-17)

Another 12 K performance by Jim Maloney. He threw a complete game giving up two runs on five hits. I debated taking him out in the 9th (he was at 125 pitches) but kept him in to face the bottom of the Mets order... and Maloney struck two out of three out to end the game. Reds win 4-2.

Maloney(W, 3-3): 9.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 12 K
Rose: 2-4, R

5/14/63
Cincinnati Reds(16-16) @ Chicago Cubs(15-18)

The Reds needed a big game from Maloney to end their three game losing streak-- and they got it. Maloney went the distance for the second straight start, this time throwing a complete game shutout with 10 K's. Maloney dropped his ERA to 3.08

Maloney(W, 4-3): 9.0 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 10 K
Rose: 2-5
