The Padres are Doomed

So far I have seen the Padres move cities every time I have started a new MLB league. Its the only team I have seen do that in every league.

I never realized this until I read an article about Adrian Gonzales earlier this year that mentioned it but apparently San Diego is the third smallest market in the league, coupled with their ownership issues I supposed they would be the most likely team to move if a team were to move.

Maybe. Personally, my money's on Oakland moving somewhere else before the end of this decade.

I was going to add a caveat about Oakland, I think they're definitely going somewhere but most of what I've heard says they're just as likely to move somewhere else within the Bay/Northern California area than a totally new market.

I don't think San Diego could be in any real danger but reading that article really opened my eyes about just how bad their situation is, apparently the city itself is like an oasis surrounded by desert and Dodger territory, there's no room for any growth at all.

It depends on how you define market, of course, but in terms of Metropolitan Statistical Area population, in 2007 San Diego was ahead of nine other U.S. cities with MLB teams. In fact, San Diego had an MSA population nearly twice that of Milwaukee.

In terms of the larger Economic Area population figures, in 2007 San Diego was ahead of five other U.S. areas with MLB clubs (there were 24 EAs hosting major league teams).

In terms of television market size (TV households), in 2008 San Diego was ahead of three other U.S. markets.

Personally, I think the Toronto Blue Jays are in danger of going the way the Expos did. The 1994-95 strike really hurt the club's fan base, it's already had its glory days of championships, and given the new economic realities of the sport, it will never again be the top payroll club in MLB like it was in 1993.

Attendance so far this year for the Jays is down 29% from last year's numbers. It's averaging just 15,253 per game, second lowest in the majors (only Cleveland is worse).

In real life, the Padres almost did relocate for real. They were close to being sold prior to the 1974 season; their new owner was planning to move them to Washington, D.C. The proposed move fooled the franchise, which designed new uniforms, and even Topps, half of whose Padres' player cards were printed with the team name, "Washington 'National League.'" However, the owner sold the team to Ray Kroc, who kept the team in San Diego.

Where does it move for you?
I did have an Owner Die for one my Minor League Teams that play in Colorado Springs before I ever Simed.
I like my League but would like to insert Historical People for a up and coming Draft for my League but can only do it manually add person by person and theirs a way to do it.

I find this interesting because I'm controlling the Padres in my league and I currently have approx 45 million to spend on FA with about a 60 million dollar player payroll.

I have a solid team right now so I won't be spending it all but the idea that a team of my size has so much money to work with doesn't seem right. I have one of the smallest media contracts but my attendance is usually in the top 5.

I don't play with league evolution, so I can't speak to the original topic (I personally don't like the unpredictability)

In the real MLB, my money is on the Rays to relocate. They are serious contenders in the AL East, yet they can't even come close to filling the seats.

Why does baseball struggle in Florida?

Is Florida so much of a basketball state that baseball can't catch on or maybe it's the weather...

There have been a number of near-moves in MLB history. The St. Louis Browns nearly went to Los Angeles; the San Francisco Giants were close to being sold to a group in Toronto; the Chicago White Sox were in danger of leaving for Florida; and so on.

If you peruse old newspaper issues online you can find a number of such stories. They make for some interesting 'what if' scenarios...

Not unlike how the idea of splitting the leagues into three divisions was proposed in 1978 but was ultimately voted down.

They are now the Jacksonville recoil. They had moved first to San Antonio.

The Rays are NOT moving, and I am ****ing sick of hearing that, for one the location of the stadium is TERRIBLE. The worst by far in the bigs. If you draw a 50 mile radius or so around the park half of it is in the ocean. Besides, one major issue is corporate support, something like 2/3 of tickets sold for most teams is by corporations, for the Rays that is 1/3. Move them to Tampa and the corporate support will no doubt come, as most of it in the area is there.
The area CAN support a team, while other teams television ratings have dropped this year the Rays ratings have DOUBLED since last season in the local area.
The Rays will move to Tampa and will be fine.
Besides, there is no other place to go currently.
Sorry, but I am really tired of people talking about the Rays moving, they aren't.

The Giants at one point even finalized a deal to sell the team to a group in Tampa, but city officials pressured the MLB to step in and block it at the last minute.
