It was (I mean that half inning of Beckett's "I am angry as hell I am going to throw at everyone I see" show) plain stupid, pathetic, and embarrassing.

Tonight, he was worse than Matsuzaka.
At least, Matsuzaka does not throw away the game like that.

It was a wild series.
Have to be happy to take a game, after losing the first two like that...

Third straight loss would have been a season killer for us.

I know it is still early, but with the way the Rays and you guys have been playing, I think we are already in a deep trouble. (If it was just one team ahead of us, it would be a different story though...)

Signs of life from Ortiz! Will be interesting to see if he can start to string things together or if this is the last hurrah.

I wish this is a start of something nice for Ortiz.
He looks more comfortable and confident at the plate for the last couple of games though.

I agree.
I really HATED the ending, but it was some heck of a game.

Our slumping big bats (Ortiz, Martinez, Drew) finally starting to warm up a bit, but the problem remains to be our inconsistent pitching and the holes in our LF/CF caused by the injuries.

I hope the hole we dug so far is not too deep...

Isnt Drew one of the league leaders in batting average?

EDIT Just looked it up and I guess not. I swear I seen a graphic during the twins game tonight where drew was #2 in batting average in something.

He was horrible in the first month or so, and then got really hot after that.

Maybe he's #2 in BA for the month of May? Tex was the same way. Horrible April, but he's lighting it up in May.

The Yankees are way deeper than the Red Sox this year.
With all these injuries, the Yankees are still winning the ballgames!

I just have to wonder if the horrible performances from our SPs this season (Not just Matsuzaka, but also from Beckett, Lackey) have something to do with V-Mart catching most of the games.

I knew he was not one of the best defensive catchers out there when we got him last year, but watching him closely this season made think about it.
Maybe it is more like "being comfortable with a certain catcher" rather than "Varitek is way better than Martinez", but all of our veteran SPs (Beckett, Lackey, Matsuzaka) seem to be comfortable pitching to the captain rather than to V-Mart.
If that is the case, we have a big problem going forward.
Varitek is in his last year with the team, and V-Mart is (if my assumption is good) not the catcher we want to keep at the end of the season. (But an important part of our offense)
I am pretty sure keeping V-Mart will require the salary for the catcher, not the DH if the team wanted to keep him.

We may end up either

1) Lose Varitek, and keep V-Mart for a lot of money, and still need to look for a good defensive starting catcher, so that we can start V-Mart as DH most of the time. Still, the new catcher has to be pretty good offensively, too, as he will be our starting catcher most of the time! (And, Mauer will not be available anymore) We can bring one of the catching prospects up to Boston the next year instead of looking for FA, but all the better prospects down there seem to be one more year away from playing in the Majors.

2) Let both of them go, and look for a new decent hitting, good defensive catcher. The problem is, I do not see any one of those being available on the market this winter... (Trading for one would cost the team A LOT)

Great performance from Matsuzaka tonight.
I thought he would really do it after Beltre's great diving catch/double play, making it 4 outs to go.

I really hope he will be little more consistent going forward, as he surely has the tools to be at least a good #4,5 SP in any league.

I like what I have been seeing for the past week or so.
Pitching and defense have been solid, and scoring enough runs to win the games. (Ortiz, Youkilis are red hot!)
Suddenly, the wild card spot looks very reachable, and the pennant race is on again!

Will not happen until Beckett is back, but after that, he will be back in the pen, and at least will think about it.

It will be so sad to see if that happens...
