Please, myasu, let us Yankees show you how to handle the Birds of Baltimore. Lesson #1 was tonight. Did you catch it?

[Your response: "Sure, 1998, you wait until AFTER the game to post this, just to be sure, eh?" ]

No, you wait until after the season to post something like this!

Finally, the team looks lively, energetic a little bit.
Ortiz is still a concern, but other players started to pick him up.

Ortiz is confusing that's for sure. At the end of May last year I was convinced that he was finished but he went on a pretty decent run to the end of the season. Right now though Tek has two more HRs than Ortiz in half as many at bats! For some reason I think if he has a horrible Yankees series this weekend and the team struggles Francona will do something with the lineup.

Yeah, the difference between the last year and this year is the pressure from the fans/media. It could force the team (Francona) to make some changes.

To paraphrase Yogi Berra, "Ortiz is getting old early out there!"

[Edit: If you were on the OOTP 11 boards recently, you may have seen some comments about inane nicknames in the game that I made, and one that I used as an example was "Cookie Monster." How did that get in the file, I wondered? Well, I happened to notice just now that, according to Baseball Reference, Ortiz's other nickname is, sure enough, "Cookie Monster." BoSox fans, care to explain this? ]

I live in Boston. I've seen that on Baseball Reference, too. But I've never heard that nickname said before. Sounds like B.S. to me.

See for yourselves, guys:

David Ortiz Statistics and History - Baseball-Reference.com

Maybe it's, uh, recent?

[Note to Bru: Knock it off. Ortiz has been a great player, an admirable opponent, and a classy gentleman. Have a little respect, even if he is at the end of his career. I don't want to have to talk to you/me again! ]

I really hope that he will get back to his old form (Second half of the 2009 season form, that is) and be as scary as the real monster before it is too late for the Red Sox to advance to the Playoff, so that you will have a nightmare of the cookie monster eating Jeter, Rivera, Posada alive instead of cookies...

Well if he played outfield I'd say he kept a secret stash of cookies back in the wall for between innings!

But here's what the Red Sox Fan Handbook says (can't leave home without it ):

Quote:
Ortiz’s popularity with fans is based as much on his gentle giant reputation as on his hitting, both as the affable “Papi” who helps keeps fellow Dominican star Manny Ramirez and the rest of the clubhouse on an even keel and as the “Cookie Monster,” the nickname his three-year-old daughter game him that stuck.
Must be a clubhouse thing only.

This is a bit distrubing, if you think about it:

Your own daughter thinking that you look like Cookie Monster? How was the association made in her young mind? Eating habits?

I would guess it is mostly because of his body size and relatively large head, not because of his eating habits

I agree.
It was a sad period of time when Remdog was not in there.
I really missed him.

I really hate watching Matsuzaka pitch.
It is so painful and boring that I almost feel like "auto-sim" for the first 5 innings and then watch the game from there on. I am pretty sure Matsuzaka will be gone by then, and I do not even care what would happen in that first 5 innings!

Yes, I agree. Eck had a couple of good games in my opinion I liked his perspective as a pitcher but completely agree, there's just a great chemistry with those two.

And also yes - that first inning especially was torture. The crowd was actually pretty polite I thought for 4 runs.

He may be a good #5 SP, and could be a nice #4 SP for any team, but thinking how much money the team spent for him (I know he did not get all the money, and I know his contract is relatively a decent one, but...) makes me sick.
And yes, the crowd at Fenway tonight was really polite and nice. They even gave him a standing O at the end of his outing...
