Since our team has such a difficult time in the big leagues, which has not been a surprise, we need to take a good hard look at this year's upcoming draft class.

We are very fortunate to be getting the first overall pick in this amateur draft, with Portland getting number two and Washington getting number three and so on.

Before making any decisions, we need to take a good hard look at the future of our organization.

We are most certainly in a 'building' phase of development.

With the first overall pick, some would suggest taking a more 'safe' pick with a college athlete that is closer to making the big league club, others advise in taking the best overall top potential talent that could win you many games in the future. But then again, this would be dilemma's if the top talent wasn't Bryce Harper, who is easily assumed to be our number one overall pick, despite his sign-ability issues.

But let's take a good look at our organizations depth prior to the depth.

Starting Pitcher - Projected rotation for 2013

1. Andrew Cashner
2. Scott Feldman
3. Ryan Perry
4. Collin Baelster
5. Josh Lindblom

Obviously very weak, we really need to find a new potential 'ace' out there.

Relievers
Schlereth, Clippard, Robertson, and Mijares are the only relievers we plan to keep on any long term plan, there are no future closers in our organization

Offensive

Catchers
Max Stassi and Lou Marson are the future catchers, Pudge is nearing the end of his line.

First Base

Lars Anderson, sadly, is the present and future of our team at first

Second Base
Francisco Oregel is only 21, and has played quite well at Triple A thus far, he may even get a call up before too long, His peak suggests he could be a role player in the big leagues.
Jemile Weeks isn't a bad option, although he is getting near his peak.
Eric Patterson has been the best hitter on the team thus far this year

We feel we are pretty strong at second in comparison to other positions

Third Base
Logan Forsythe isn't what we would call a top prospect by any means, and we feel an improvement could be had.
Neil Walker isn't half bad

Shortstop

Jurickson Profar and Jose Iglesis are both really far away, but have had to play in the big leagues before we wanted them to. We would invite a low round college shortstop to join our squad.

Outfield

Donovan Tate will be our starting centerfielder as soon as he can develop his bat. We don't need a centerfielder, unless it's for depth.
in the corners, our main squad is alright for now, and can be through free agency, so anyone picked for the corners would hopefully be a high ceiling type player. We already have a lot of outfield prospects though, so we don't feel this is any worse than a position such as second base.

To sum up:

Bryce Harper can play many positions, and he will very likely be our top pick, possibly forcing one of Marson or Stassi to first base to compete with Anderson.

We need pitching depth badly, so expect to see many picks there after the first round. A third basemen will be looked for as well.

Rod Barajas tore his labrum and might have ended his career.

He was released by the Mets on April 15th, and signed a one year deal with the Astros the next day.

He was released by the Astros today, and will go through some surgeries, but it's doubtful he can return ever. It came on a collision at first vs Milwaukee's Fielder.

The 2010 Draft is today (moved up to 5-24-10)

We have the first overall pick

Team needs:
Pitching pitching and more pitching!
As well we need a third basemen for our future.
Will likely take the top talent with each pick, but don't be surprised to see this draft favor pitching.

A Breakdown of the picks

Round 1
C Bryce Harper is 20/80 overall

Summary: Greatest player overall available in the draft, easily.
We expect him to break records for us, and to likely make the big league club next year. We expect future MVP Awards, and he will be our franchise player. Reminds us of a young Pudge.

Round 2
SP Angel 'Big Z' Rangel

Summary: We were surprised he was still available for us in the second round. Makes us concerned that maybe we are missing something. He will be a starter for us, and might even make the big league club this year. He really only has two developed pitches, but he can throw a third (circle change). We think he is gonna be something special, especially with that velocity. Reminds us of Rich Harden

Round 3
3B Matt Kimball

Summary: We saw the opportunity to get that third basemen of the future. He is a total speedster and a switch hitter. Should be an ideal lead off hitter if his eye can develop and his contact ability. Reminds us of Chone Figgins

Round 4
SP Flynn Martin

Summary: A total ground ball pitcher, that is his make up. He throws to contact, won't walk many guys. A college lefty out of OkState. In fact, he doesn't throw anything straight. A left handed version of Joel Pinero

Round 5
CF Jesus Guzman

Summary: Fastest guy in the draft, alright defensively in center. Reminds us of Nyjer Morgan.

Round 6
CL Ernesto Valdes

Summary: Was listed as a first basemen, but we are going to use him as a closer. We think could be a lot like a Matt Capps, Mat Lindstrom type closer, possibly as good as a Jose Valverde.

Round 7
SP Ka-Pa Kuang

Summary: Nothing special here, might make the big leagues some day, he was more or less a safe pick in the seventh round. Has a lot of decent pitches, not sure where his ceiling is.

Round 8
Carter Simmons

Summary: An athlete. He can play any position, including pitch. We aren't sure where he will end up, but we plan to watch him develop.

Round 9
1B Peter Gregory

Summary: Has a lot of power potential, and a switch hitter, but he is already 21 (college player) and we aren't sure how much more will he develop.

We like how we came out on this draft.

In our draft negotiations, only our first five picks demanded contract offers.

We met the demand on each player, since we desperately needed each pick to join our organization.

C Bryce Harper - 9,690,000
SP Francisco Rangel - 1,220,000
3B Matt Kimball - 4,260,000
SP Flynn Martin - 370,000
CF Jesus Guzman - 250,000

Kimball was the only high priced player, but we need a future third basemen. Harper was expensive, but worth it.

Everyone in the draft was sent throughout the various spots in Rookie ball. Delta Cleary was promoted to Double A

W - Parra 3-1
SV - Schlereth 5

Trevor Hoffman gets save number 600

Flynn Martin accepted his offer.

Jon Link is designated for assignment
Jose Iglesis is sent to Triple A
Franciso Oregel is called up and placed on the 40 man roster

Oregel is considered the top second base prospect in all of baseball.

This creates a surplus with Weeks and Patterson if Oregel can work out. He is the 87th top prospect in all of baseball, and our second best behind Tate.

Oregel was playing well in Triple A

We have the 22nd best minor league system in baseball.

5-28-10
8-40

Francisco Rangel accepts our offer.

Wilton Lopez was designated for assignment
Francisco Rangel is called up to the big leagues, straight from the ammy draft
Manny Parra is sent to Triple A

And Rangel is asked to immediately start for us. Talk about a rush!

Rangel has also been listed as our new top overall prospect, ahead of Tate.

Rangel and Harper become prospects numbers one and two respectfully in the country...moving our entire minor league system from number 22 to number 3.

A major jump for us being able to get both of those players.

Adam Dunn signs a 6 year extension to stay in Washington, worth 123,540,000 with a million dollar bonus if he ever wins an MVP award. The salary is balanced out through the 6 years and the final year is a player option, that you can probably assume will be exercised.

Dunn was a player we were following for ourselves in upcoming free agency.
