Injury Frequency?
It may just be a fluke, but I have Injuries set to Low and in my 1st month of playing there are atleast 1 injury per day (not everyday, but on average) that is longer than 2 weeks.
Anyone else see this? |

Yes.
I saw that in X. Just bought XI. I play in God-mode, handling all roster decisions for all teams. In OOTP X, rarely did I sim thru a day that didn't require someone going on the IR. I've grown especially interested in this topic since someone noted that only 50-something players appeared on the IR in 1972. Orange reminded me that in the 1970s teams were limited to placing no more than 3 players at a time on the 21 day DL. Which brings up some interesting questions about injury rates and team practices thru the ages. I'm using "very low" injury rate in XI in God mode. I'm thru the first month and I'll let you know how that goes. But, so far, just a few players have hit the DL. That's a good reflection of the early 70s rate. how do you change injury frequency, and what do you recommend for playing in the majors in 2010?

Let me know how it turns out in "very low". I might have to make the switch.

Anyway, I'm in the middle of May. I had also forgotten about the 21 day disabled list. Several times a player has been injured 2 weeks and I've kept him on the team roster, not wanting to lose him for three weeks. That's made the DL decisions interesting, too. I lost a couple of catchers for several days to two weeks. Now what? I wonder if the stricter DL rule was why teams from days gone by used to carry 3 catchers So far, the DL list looks like this: APRIL CAL Catcher Ellie Rodriguez (2 week injury) HOU SS Roger Metzger out 4 months NYY P Doc Medich (2 weeks) MAY LA OF Von Joshua (3 weeks) MIL 1B George Scott (4 weeks) TEX DH Tom Grieve (4 months) NYM SS Bud Harrelson (3 weeks) SF C Dave Rader (3 weeks) SD OF Gene Locklear (3 months) So, 9 DL visits in 6 weeks. I could have thrown a few more 2 week injuries onto 21 day DL, but I felt the team could weather their injury without a call-up. So far, injuries on "very low" has a much better 70s feel. Quote:
But, you change the setting by going into a game. At the top, you'll see the OOTP tab. Click on that. A menu will fall. Choose "Game Setup" On the left side of the page, right below the Enable Injuries box, you'll see a setting for Injury Frequency. Last edited by knockahoma; 04-21-2010 at 05:44 PM. |

I'll probably set my injuries according to number of players per team in the database (I play historicals), so the frequency will vary from year to year, but I won't go up to the highest setting. Second highest? Sure. When I turn them off (19th/early 20th century), I'll set position player fatigue to high to compensate.
I have a bit of a different (perhaps naive?) take on injuries. I see them as a factor that allows teams/leagues to get as many players who played IRL into the lineup/on the active roster (I use reserve rosters for the AI's sake). Does that mean most/all teams will be playing with crappy players at some point in the season? Yup. Do most/all teams in MLB play with crummy players at some point in the season? Yup. I'll re-evaluate if I start seeing 20 players on the DL on a team with 40ish players, or if a team is getting bludgeoned at the same position over and over again. One thing I won't accept is CEIs. I'll unretire them and put them back on the team they were on and on the DL for as long as they would've been originally plus any setbacks, but I play with retire according to history, so I see this as a bit of unnecessary overkill for me. It needs to be there for those that want it though.

I would personally set it to high, but it's definitely a personal thing. People can get really upset about injuries, sometimes to the point where they think the AI is conspiring against them...Has anyone seen the tin foil?

I have not seen a drop in injuries except for pitchers and catchers. These two groups especially pitchers don't get injured nearly as often as they should. I think its something that should be looked into.

Shame to hear the distribution is still wonky. I thought this was supposed to be fixed. Do you have any data to support this or is it a first impression from playing the game? No offense, just asking a question that needs to be asked mostly so Markus can get it right.

This is why I haven't reported it as a bug or any thing. I haven't played that many seasons but I'm averaging 10 injuries per infield position, 13 per outfield position. Only 6 for pitchers and 3 for catchers. This is per season for the league not each team. I play with injuries set to high.
Also no minors and only 40 game season. EDIT: Also I should mention in over 14 seasons I have not had a single career ending injury. Last edited by mm7607; 04-22-2010 at 02:31 AM. |

What about the ratio of long (say 3month+) injuries? Pitchers should suffer a higher portion of long term injuries. Batters get a lot of day to day type injuries right?

Pitchers do suffer the higher portion of those injuries for me, but it just a constant day in day out type of thing. I have a really small sample size but I started this thread just to see what other people were noticing so I know what to look forward to.

I'm playing current season and playing out every game for the Rangers. I'm in mid-May and have had Julio Borbon, Josh hamilton, Nelson Cruz, David Murphy and Endy Chavez all injured for 3 to 4 weeks. This is at low injury setting. It has destroyed my season as I've lost 7 in a row and have dropped under .500 after a great start. Have since put injuries down to very low.

I'm running a historical league from 1969 onward. What would you reccomend I set the injury frequency at? What I'm getting from this thread is that it should be set to Very Low in the early 70's. At what point do I move it up to Low and so on?
Help would be greatly appreciated! |

It's all what you're comfortable with. Until Orange had pointed out the DL rules of the 70s, I lived with the 6,7,8 guys at a time on the DL. But, with the old rule that allowed for only 3 at a time on the DL (although I guess a supplemental DL list existed), I keep the injuries on very low. And playing in God-mode, I'm trying to keep all teams complying with that rule, although I need to bone up on the specifics.

My first league I had a player on my team go down every day for the first week, including my #1 starter just signed to a huge deal for 13 months. I started a new one with the same settings ( for different reasons ) and my team has yet to suffer an injury 26 games in and my team is mainly overpriced old veterans. Kind of like gambling, people who experience good fortune rarely point it out. I like having to scramble to plug holes due to injury, but I also like winning so I won't complain.
