2010 Boston Red Sox Season Thread

Well, the first series against the Yankees is over.

Good to see many of the new players (Beltre, Cameron, Scutaro, Lackey...)
already fitting to the team nicely.

Things I will watch closely over next several weeks would be...

1) If Ortiz can silence people/media who are already screaming for Lowell to DH instead of him (I personally think everyone should take it easy on Papi, and let him see some pitches before judge anything)

2) How will Lowell be used by Francona? (Will he have some playing time?)

3) Is V-Mart really our catcher for the season? (Will/Should Sox look for another catcher and let Vicor Martinez DH, if they will be able to somehow trade Lowell and/or Ortiz?)

4) Bullpen (Do we have enough talent in the pen? I am a bit worried about Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez, Okajima)

5) What will happen when Matsuzaka returns to the rotation? What if Wakefield / Buchholz were both pithing extremely well?

The Papi situation has to be a thorn in Francona's side. I'm sure he would have loved to put Lowell at DH vs Pettitte. But, thanks to the media firestorm that would have generated, he wasn't able to. That decision just might have cost the Sox the game. Lowell has always hit well vs Pettitte and Ortiz did leave (I think) 4 out of the 5 guys he had in scoring position on the bases. He did knock in their only run, so at least there is something positive.

Still, can the Sox wait till late May like they did last year?

Your starting pitching looks pretty good. Lackey threw a gem the other night.

I think you are right about the Ortiz situation, Joe.

Ortiz has always done well against the Royals, so we will see how he does in the next series... If he does not start hitting well, Francona will do what he has to do... which is to DH lowell at least against lefty SPs.

I myself am interested to see what Lowell can do this year. Lets just see how Papi does. Im starting to think hes headed down the same path as Jeff Bagwell... Steroids leave his body then numbers and health follow. I hope not because Ortiz has done so much for the Red Sox. Only time will tell.

I simply do not know what is wrong with this team right now.

Varitek, of all the players, has the most HR for the season right now.
Catchers just can not stop the runners stealing bases, and all the opposing runners look like Ichiro.
Scutaro already has like 1,000 errors.
Ortiz, Drew, Martinez has like the combined .200 Avg.
Jay-Z sued Ortiz. (Could you please do it in the off season?, Mr. Jay-Z? Not now...)

I know it is very early in the season, but I just do not like what I am seeing right now.

You did not mention injuries to Cameron and Ellsbury?? Also, see bolded. Nice start for the Yankees, but the only real satisfaction that I have so far is in being above Tampa in the standings. ALWAYS strange to be looking up at devil ray tails (yeah, yeah, I know they changed their nicknames).

Bruce, it seems like most the Red Sox fans here have already given up on the team this year.
I sort of knew that this thread would not be very active from the last year's experience.

Anyways, I think Cameron's kidney stone is not very serious, as Ellsbeury's injury.

With today's loss, we are already 5 games back from you guys and the Rays.
What can I do?

After starting the season 1-8 (or something close to that) vs you guys last year, the Yanks figured it out and still took the division. Bottom line, April is too early to be handing out championships or lemons.

I know, Joe.
I just had to let it out and say what was on my mind somewhere.
Although I do not think this 2010 Red Sox team is championship worthy, still believe we will be able to make it to the ALDS.

The pitching should straighten out... it's early. Really is frustrating to see opposing baserunners going at will though. I was surprised Girardi didn't send more during the Yankees series. I wonder if Theo is going to make a move for another bat or if he thinks he has enough right now.

I'd like to see Theo try to get a decent defensive catcher, and move Victor to First, or to DH spot. (Bench Ortiz/Lowell, and try to trade one of them)
It is possible that this opposing SB thing is destroying the concentration of the SPs, and just being a full time catcher is wearing out V-Mart.
It would still be great if Lowell could be traded for a catcher somewhere, but I guess that is not gonna happen after he said he might wanna retire after this season...

And we just lost Ellsbury and Cameron to DL.
At this point, I am looking forward to Matsuzaka's return.
That is how bad this team is right now.

Phew...

It took a couple of minor league players for the Red SOx to win this ballgame tonight. (Reddick and McDonald, they are)

9 SB and 9 walks allowed by the Sox battery tonight.
It is simply horrible baseball.

On the bright side it's quite a thing to win a game in which you give up 9 SB. Something has to be done though as that's not something that "straightens itself out," and Tek can't throw anyone out either (even though he's been hitting in his handful of at bats).

I agree.

Something has to be done about the catcher position.
We do not need 4 DHs (Ortiz, Lowell, Tek, V-Mart) in 25 men roster, for sure...

2 walk off wins in 2 nights!
Hope this will energize the team a bit.

Ouch ..
