Closer innings
Has anyone had any luck tweaking the settings to get the computer to use it's closers more often?
In my league, set-up guys generally throw 65 to 80 innings per season (I play a shorter season). However, the closers are only getting 40 to 55 innings or so. I'd rather my bullpen usage more closely resemble 70's and 80's types where the closers are getting much more work. |

One thing I notice is relievers rack up close to 100 innings per season (162 game schedule) in this version (compared to ootp 9). I think it's because of the new pitching model. Many MR are SP converted, so they have high stamina. Natural closers have low stamina though. In ootp 9 relievers had low stamina and thus pitched a realistic number of innings. Thus I think MR pitch too long of spells.
I'm considering bumping up the SP endurance modifier. This way starters will pitch longer outings, setting up the traditional setup man in 8th, closer in 9th. This might solve your problem, but I'm not sure. You could also try lowering the general pitcher endurance to "very low". |

I actually did bump up the SP endurance modifier and my sp's are throwing a lot of innings (which is what I was going for).
I guess the real question/issue here is - how do you get OOTP to emulate closer usage from other era's where they were throwing 75-100 innings with more frequent 2 innings saves? It might not be possible, I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck/success with this. |

Try reducing the rotation size? I don't know if it's possible, but you have to somehow control the bullpen size. Bullpen today is 7-8, if you can get the AI teams to use a 5-6 man bullpen they will use the closer more often.
Another idea is to convert your closer to SP. So he will have higher enducrance than the other relievers (don't know if this works though). BTW, what number do you for SP endurance? |

I've been tweaking the settings for my league for a while and I'm soooo close to getting it where I want! This is the LAST PIECE for me; to try to make it so that the closers are throwing more innings.
I only play a 108 game schedule but I use 3-man rotations and small (20 man) rosters. My stats look good except for the fact that every teams' pitching staff seems to follow a similar model.... 3 SP's 1 or 2 setup guys who throw 70-100 innings 1 closer who throws 46-60 innings a couple of mopup guys Has anyone had any luck getting their closers to pick up some of those middle relief innings? I'd prefer the closers get 80+ innings and take some away from those setup guys. My settings: Use of Relievers: Rarely Use of Closers: Very Often Not sure if the "Use of Relievers" setting is meant for pitchers OTHER THAN the closer but these were the last settings I used and they gave me the best results. Anyway this isn't a huge deal for me, I just thought I'd see if anyone has had any luck with it! Thanks. |
