Ping: Garlon/Historical Team Re: Recalc Settings

Really dumb question for Garlon or somebody else on the historical beta team:

Should "recalc ratings based on real stats after each year" be checked if you have "ratings recalculation base..." set to 3 years? This is how it is out of the box. Shouldn't the drop down be set to one year?

If I understand the question, the answer is no. There are people who have been playing with 1-year recalc, but the conventional approach is 3-year. Exception would be people who create a Single-Season Replay game, and then decide to continue into a second season or something.

Or is this about the use of the words "real stats" or because it says "each year" which makes it sound like 1 year recalc. Just fishing here ...

I think that checkbox, right above the dropdown menu makes it confusing. It makes you wonder if the box should be checked AND the dropdown menu should be set to one year to get the best results, or whether the box should be unchecked and set to 3 year. It seems like a duplicate option...probably because of the wording and location of both settings.

It's just that both work together. One tells the game whether or not you want to have recalc (some people, like myself, don't). The other tells the game what type of recalc (1-year, 3-year, or 5-year) you want, if you choose to have recalc. Most historical guys (I think) have recalc checked -- meaning they want it -- and have it set to 3-year recalc.

If all that isn't clear, it's possible that the whole recalc business is confusing (which happens to all of us at some point ).

I never play with recalc on...it seems unfair because if you know the history of baseball you know what players are going to do what for the given season and can take advantage of the AI...of course this can also lead to Hall of Fame players ending up have average careers

I play with recalc on, but ratings off, write over the names in the Master.csv file with a random name generator and blot out giveaways like nicknames, birth cities, birth country etc - everybody's an American in my games regardless of where they came from originally. Without doing the country thing it's too easy to figure out who that terrific Irish pitcher from the 19th century (Tony Mullane) is. I think this might actually give the AI the advantage, which is probably a good thing. Of course you have to try to avoid remembering players birthdays, unless you want to get rid of that too.

What I like about recalc on is that the talent distribution comes as close as possible to RL talent distribution. It would probably piss me off if Paul Zuvella made the HoF, but Hank Aaron did not. At the end of my game, I can take a month or so to sort out who was who. All part of the fun of the game, but not everyone's cup of tea.

Also, I think historical recalc games come closest to getting the stats right on a league-wide basis, but that may have changed in this version. It's totally cliche, but "It's your game, play it your way" totally applies to OOTP.

I like the accuracy of it...maybe you add some house rules...like for the draft you let the AI draft the players for you..and for trades stick to deals that the AI offers you etc...the only thing is this though...say for Tony Conigliaro...the great part of this game is you can change history..OOTP will recalc Tony C to turn into crap soon after 1967 because of the injury..with recalc off though he might become a Hall of Famer...I am torn...lol...the game has too many options sometimes lol..

There is no reason why this should be true, especially if you are using 3-year or 5-year recalc. With those settings virtually no players are starting that season with ratings that reflect what they actually did in that season historically (except by some sort of coincidence). The only thing that recalc does (IMHO) is make sure that players have a career that is reasonably close to what occurred IRL (even if they suffer a major injury in the OOTP game -- which is one of the things that makes recalc a bit questionable in my mind). But what happens on a league-wide basis during a season is going to be roughly the same, either way. I have never tested that -- just inferring from the way the game works.

And that's exactly what I'm looking for. I use 3-year re-calc double weighted and I don't care if individual players don't perform exactly as they did in various seasons provided their career comes close to their RL career. The only way to measure that, due to injuries/RL war service etc is to use PA per X statistic and see if it measures up. Mostly it does. That's what I want.
