Player Development
Tried searching for an older thread asking this, but evidently I either couldn't find the right term(s) to search for or I didn't look at old enough threads. Anyways, my question is: If I have 2 third basemen both at AA, will the one not starting have his development hindered due to not playing much? If so, would his development be hindered moreso by moving him down to A?
Just trying to figure out how to maximize my farm system. Also, using OOTP11 if that would change the answer |

What I always do in that situation is keep both players at the proper level and cross train. Let the lesser defensive player stay at his natural position most of the time while the more athletic one moves around. Where he plays depends on the other prospects on your team. My system groups the positions as follows.....
Group One 1B/DH/(3B) Group Two 2B/SS/(3B) Group Three LF/CF/RF For each group I have a "bench" player assigned to cover days off. These "bench" players aren't like regular bench players. They play 5 games a week, as do the starters. Some might not like giving their top prospects 1-2 days off a week but I've grown to like the system. Not only does it allow me to get regular at bats for 12 hitters instead of 9, but it helps create versatility and cuts down on injuries. So in a nutshell, having two good 3B prospects is a good thing. Use it to your advantage. If they don't learn to play other positions now then what will happen when they are both ML ready? Will you keep one in the minors? Hand one a first base mitt and see what happens. The outcome of minor league games are meaningless anyway. There is nothing to lose. |

Appreciate the advice, but micro-managing my farm system sounds like more of a job than a fun time for me. Will just take my chances that my minor league managers know what they're doing

You can do a run through of your minors once every month or two to make sure things are the way you want.
