How many games are your fictional seasons?
I'm having trouble deciding. These are my two opposing factors:
1) MLB length season: That way records have more context. They equate to what happened in real life. 2) Shorter than MLB length: Get get through more seasons (if I play out my games). Any thoughts? |

I usually play 162 or thereabouts, solely so the in-game "accomplishments" screen is meaningful (I've been asking for years for this to be editable, like the HOF criteria), but I do on occasion do odd things, like 32 game / 1-man rotation schedules or on one occasion a 314 game schedule.

When I think about fictional season length, I have the exact same thought process.
I always decide that'd I'd rather have fewer seasons, with stats that have more meaning to me, so I go with a 162 game season. I have considered an 81 game season, because I could then take final stats, and double them for perspective, but that loses a little luster for me, especially when thinking about career records. |

I stick with 162 simply because of the "Accomplishments".
I also have been asking for Customizeable Accomplishments for a number of years. |

For a while I became enamored with tournament still of play and I set up two leagues with three divisions each and only two teams in each division. I then set up wild cards in the playoffs so that four teams out of the six in each league made the playoffs. I created a super short season of just 30 games, three at home, three on the road. But as BruceM points out, it really screws with the "Accomplishments". And I never figured out how to force the minors to do the same, so there was a big miss match.
Now I play the 162 game season but actually only actively manage a dozen or so games so I have a good feel for my team. It helps me realize that I need a left handed bat off the bench, or a middle reliever who can eat up some innings when looking for players to add to my team. |

I tend to keep my fictional leagues smaller so that I can more easily customize the leagues (logos, unis, etc...) - like 16 teams or less. If I plan on playing out the games, I go to less games (like 100-120) so I can play more seasons before I burn out. If I sim, then 154 or 162 is common for me.

I've always been partial to 154 game seasons. I play more as a general manager so I feel like 154 games gives me enough of a regular major league season.
I do have minor leagues with shorter seasons as well as independant leagues with shorter seasons as well. |

I go with the 162 game schedule and generally try to keep the major league rules for my fictional leagues, even though my preferred league setup looks nothing like the majors.
I prefer to have an 8 team fictional league, divided into two sub-leagues of 4 teams (6 minor league affiliates per team) with no interleague play. Even though you play the same three teams over and over, you really get to know the players around the league. I've found that with larger fictional leagues, I only really get to know the best players in the league and not the lesser ones. |

I play a 40 game season starting with 16 teams eventually adding 16 more teams. 20 man rosters with no reserve or minors. Easy to keep track and much less time consuming. Based on the old APBA games I used to play in the 70s

I typically follow MLB history with a fictional league. So, 16 teams and 154 games until the early 60's, then start expanding and switch to 162 games.

My first OOTP fictional season (back in OOTP8) was 154 games for the same reason. Currently, I play 94 game seasons. Accomplishments be damned, I don't really look at them anyways since I know they won't show up until we can customize them. I get through a season in about two weeks playing out 95% of my games, although it's closer to three these days with the baby ![]() Why 94? I dunno. Sounded good to me. |

I must be really strange. I can play through a 162 game season in 2 weeks, less if I don't have a lot to do. I think I need a life.

It's normally worse during the MLB season. I'll play out 3 weeks to a month in the course of one Twins game.

I go with a 108 game schedule because I like to play more seasons.
However, in order to have more meaningful stats, I have 22 man rosters, 3 man rotations, and very few injuries. As a result, the pitching stats look like real MLB (sp's will get 30 to 37 starts) and while the hitters are a little on the low side ab-wise, it's not too bad. |
