Jones-Hopkins II

After much (OK, about 30 seconds worth) thought, I've decided I won't spend the $49.95 to watch Bernard Hopkins expertly out-box the corpse of Roy Jones Jr.

I will, however, sim and post Jones-Hopkins II in my great-fights-that-never-were thread. It will be a meeting of the prime 168-pound Jones and the prime middleweight Hopkins in October 1996, just before Jones moved up to light-heavy.

If you have thoughts on how it might really have gone at that point in their respective careers -- would it have been a replay of the first meeting? Did Hopkins learn enough from their first meeting and in the three-plus years in between to close the gap on Roy? -- let's hear it here or in the 'Shoulda but Didna' thread linked below ...

(Since Haye-Ruiz isn't available anywhere, it seems, I thought about making that the undercard fight, but couldn't bring myself to do that to you, or me.)

Don't know what Jones is still doing fighting, other than the almighty dollar. Looks like a shot fighter to me. Hopkins over Jones, TKO in the middle rounds.

A fast Jones probably would have always beaten Hopkins. Hopkins was never a big puncher... he was more of the "break them down over the rounds" type of boxer/puncher. At his best, Jones was so incredibly fast that he was rarely caught will hard, solid punches.

You're a brave man to be buying the PPV!

No way would I pay for this, two 40 odd years olds fighting!! Damn I was 16 when they first fought!!! Anyway although I'm no great Roy Jones fan, I hope he wins tonight and then calls it a career!! My head says Hopkins will beat him down and win in 8 though.
I think its on www.justintv.com for free if u wanna watch it tho, i won't cos its late here but I'm interested to wake up tomorrow and check out the action!
I love this sport!!!!!!

The interesting thing about the matchup (at least up through about 2003, before Jones' chin crystallized) is that Hopkins got better technically as he got older, while Jones relied completely on his speed and instinct. When his physical gifts started to fade, his mechanical flaws started to show.

In 1993, a relatively green Hopkins lost eight rounds to four on all three cards. By the late '90s, I think Hopkins' defense would have stifled Roy and he would have broken him down.

I've been following tonight's rematch on fanhouse.com, the only place that seems to have round-by-round recaps. Glad I saved the money -- Hopkins has won every round through eight and the only drama came in the sixth, when Roy put him down with a rabbit punch. Hopkins was given time to recover and still won the round.

My simmed fight tonight was much more dramatic. And free!

The one thing that stuck out going into this fight was the fact that Bernard Hopkins didn't care that Jones had just been stopped against Danny Green. It gave the overall impression that they didn't even care if it appeared they were just showing up to collect a paycheck (which obviously, Jones was).

And then, they want to charge $50 for it? I would love to know whether they lost money on this fight or not.
