Any interest in a very different type of OOTP League
I've been tossing around the idea of a very different type of OOTP league. Basically, we'd start with 2010 Real Rosters and we would sim 1 week for each 1 week of real-life time. We'd only sim 1 season every year.... but the catch is, each player would have his ratings recalculated each year based on CHONE Projections. Prospects would not be eligible to play in our ML level until they play in the real MLB. Basically - instead of scouting through OOTP to find Diamonds in the Rough, you would have to scout real life minor league reports. How would we handle new prospects? Well, naturally, we'd have our own Amateur Draft Each year, same as real-life. The only difference is that we would do it in the offseason to fill in some of the empty time.
How would this be done within OOTP.... 1. You'd have your major league roster of 25 men. 2. You'd have a reserve roster, who make up the remainder of your 40-man roster plus a couple extras. 3. Prospects would be tracked on the website, not from in-game. Each prospect will be created in-game and added to your reserve roster the year after his major league debut is made. Or, if he has never debuted but it is certain that his debut will come in the current year, he'll be created in advance. 4. Games will be simmed in OOTP and we'll do 1 sim per week, consisting of 1 week of real time. Other stuff 1. The Amateur Draft will be very important way to stockpile good prospects, meaning you'll have to scout players just like real teams have to. 2. You'll have to follow your prospects and other teams prospects throughout the year to see if the stock is rising or falling. Just as real teams would have to. 3. You'll have to follow your real players too, note of them improving or declining to make your decisions accordingly. 4. Big focus on Free Agency. It will be much more prolonged than normal leagues and it will be done out of game. 5. Obviously a huge emphasis on stable GM's who want to really live out the life of managing an ML team, and not want instant gratification of having 10 seasons of history instantly. If this sounds interesting to you or you'd like to discuss then by all means post. But if you hate the idea, I'm not looking to be flamed...

I'll take the Detroit Tigers. Even though I'm more of an instant history kind of guy, this sounds like it might be a fun way to follow your favorite team in RL.

Well - it's not Open yet. I'm just testing the waters to see if there is interest.
If there is I'll do it; if not, then obviously I won't. I kind of liken it to a mix of fantasy baseball/OOTP.

Yeah - the problem is keeping people's interest. People with bad teams would take much longer to rebuild, but if they were more interested in emulating real life and less worried about "being a winner" then I think this could be a huge success.
It'd be very slow paced, and a lot of the fun would be in scouting players outside of the game. It'd be a lot like a Fantasy Baseball Keeper League, only we'd be using OOTP to determine matchups, not the players real life stats.

How would injuries work? Can't really let OOTP determine that, so would you turn off injuries, but put players on the D/L as they occur in RL?

Interesting idea, I'll definitely keep my eye on this one. What would your sim schedule be like ? Sim 1 day every day or say on a Monday sim 7 days.

I'm not interested in a league with such a slow pace, but I do think the pace might appeal to those who like to write articles. Some of that might be lessened by real articles, but if players are on different teams you'd still have interesting interactions you could create.
I do worry that only having ratings change during the offseason, over such a long course of real time, might make it seem like there's little incentive to speculate on players during the year. Really, it'd become about finding players with the best ratings for that season, then sitting back and hoping to avoid injury. Does CHONE do projections for every minor leaguer? How would you handle a player that is brought up in real life, but CHONE missed out on?

Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest so I'm not going to move forward. Just letting anyone know who was interested.

It's a pity, would have been nice to see a league with a difference.

Yeah, I think it would have been cool, but I think we would have had a hard time filling it up. I couldn't even recruit more than a couple from my own league, which was a real bad sign for it.
Maybe before the 2011 Season this will be investigated some more.
