The OOTP Historical Fage Gen Project has begun!

Update!
This project is going very well! By the time the game is released on April 14th we will already have a Face Gen set ready for the MLB2010 quickstart league provided with OOTP11. This set will have approximately 1500 face gen images ready to be imported in the game, including Managers!

In addition, we will also be able to release the initial version of our Historical Face Gen set. This set is currently in progress and will have over 2000 Face Gens included in this initial release including...

1) Every Hall of Famer
2) Every Player who appeared for the Expos even 1 game (Thank You AES!)
3) Any current Major Leaguer who was 28 years old in 2008 or later (culled from the MLB set)
4) A generic Face Gen for any player who there is no known picture (No more default picture)
5) And many many many more...

We are still looking for contributors and now that we have two weeks until release we know you have nothing to do!

Go to SoxxCountry and go to the the Forum (The Dugout), register and get started.

You DO NOT need OOTP11 to participate

What are we doing?
Our goal will be to have Face Gen images for every historical player. These will be collected under one group and will be ready for import into the game.

Who’s doing this?
Everybody! The project will be administered by Gambo, Kagnew (Soxx) and Muzamba. There will be no limit on how many people we want to be involved. All we ask is that you follow a few simple “rules” to this project.

How do I get started?
Like I said above, go ahead to SoxxCountry, register and read the in-depth tutorial we have posted to get started.

But I don’t have OOTP11.
Doesn’t matter! Let us worry about that.

How will it work?
In our forum you will request a certain number (20-50) of players to do. This can be the top unassigned players from our list, players from a certain era or debut season or a specific group of random guys. Just post it on the forum and we will respond to you as quickly as we can with the final list of your assignment. If you pick a guy that’s already done we will let you know. When you’re done, you email us the .fg images and we’ll do the rest. It is 1st come 1st serve, so if you want to do baseball’s greatest you better act fast.

How much of a commitment is this?
The Face Gen process takes about 5 minutes per player. If you choose 20 guys we’re talking about 2-3 hours of work. We do not need you to turn around with results right away, just as quick as you can. Our time limits will be fairly lenient. Once your done and you send the files to us you are free to stop or ask for another group.

Anything Else?
We want this to be FUN (if you haven’t tried it is!) but organized. All we ask is that you follow the rules for the type of product we’re asking for.

What type of product are you asking for?
While I love a certain Yankee power-hitter from the 1970s with the sunglasses and mustache, we would be looking for is an image of him a little earlier in his career. The mustache can be added to him in game. This is defined in our tutorial.

Finally…
We know many of you have been playing around with this already. For you guys, go ahead and put a request for the guys you have already done as long as they fit in the criteria we defined. We do not want the work that’s been already done to go for naught.

Are you going to solve the duplicate name problem as well in doing this project?

I know the Gambo's database use a different name convention than Lahman for the player name. He use the middle name initial and all my photopack names were change to reflect that, I will do the same for this. But I don't know for the project team and it will mean that I will have to check and change the names in the database when I will get the new game again. Too bad the Lahman database or the one with the game doesn't use this convention.

You can't use the LahmanID because OOTP looks for player name or player ID number.


I spent more hours than I would like to think re-doing all the OOTPX databases and the PhotoPacks to create a in sync version. Because of the disconnects, I finally stopped updating photos because it was too much effort to go thru and re-sync up names.

I believe we would need Marcus's help here as well. OOTP doesn't use vanilla Lahman. Fields are added (particularly to the master.csv. I don't know with the fielding changes whether more fields will be added. Those files are then "pre-compiled" to help loading particular seasons into an Open Database.

I guess what I am suggesting, is given the magnitude of the proposed project, could we create some synergy where could standardize on the names, update Lahman for Marcus before he adds all his data. Thus we would create photos/faces and databases that those of us looking for historical replays could utilize. Knowing that they will stay in sync as we update photos and faces. Then we would only have to worry about the annual Lahman updates.

I am more than willing to participate in such an effort (Having done this once for X).

Having worked on both databases and photo projects I know exactly where you guys are coming from. What will probably happen is we will collect the photos as they are named in Lahman.

Unfortunatly because not everybody uses databases outside of the game provided one we have to start with that as the base, then provide other options as we go.

I will probably include an add on pack to the collection we have that has the double names changed to the Spritze/Gambo database names as a subfolder.

It's just that this is not a priority right now. But I am keeping track!

I guess I was hoping that those of you who always seem to work with Marcus on these things, could help reach a middle ground. If we provide Marcus with an updates (name wise) Lahman that he could use, then we would all be working off the same master name database.

It would seem to be a win/win scenario.

Except, wouldn't the changes be lost the next time a new version of the Lahman db came out and Markus used that one?

Not if we provide the update. When it is done once , the update would not be that difficult. Plus it only comes out once a year.

I've been trying it...it seems pretty easy...one word of advice, don't try to model your young kids; the results aren't pretty; to see of this really works - can anyone recognise the 80's Orioles outfielder in my avatar? Add some bushy hair?
