Target Field

I am nearing completion on my version of Target Field and thought I would share it with the OOTP community. My working copy is 1600 x 1200 but the image I am attaching here is 800 x 600 so it will meet the maximum upload size and can be viewed. I will upoad two more images - day and night versions - once I have added the fans. I will add 800 x 600 images of those as well and provide hyperlinks to the 1600 x 1200 images.

I created Target Field to the same scale and orientation of the default_grass ballpark in OOTP10 so all fielder alignments and animations should work with the default settings.

As some of you may know, I post under the name Teflon (previously Teflon Skies) as a reference to the baseball experience I have known indoors as a fan of the Twins. For years I have longed for a "real" ballpark for my team and in 62 days, my wish will be fulfilled.

Maybe wait until you find out if they resign Mauer first because if they don't then this picture with no fans will be real.

After 21 seasons spent playing in an expanded minor league park shared with the local NFL team and 28 seasons angled into their Teflon-roofed football stadium, in their 50th season in the upper Midwest, the Minnesota Twins will finally have a park of their own – Target Field. It was many long years in the coming – years that saw the club offered up for contraction by its billionaire owner and pursued by a potential buyer intent on relocating the team to the Carolinas. Years that saw the team rise up from an also-ran through the mid and late 90’s to a steady playoff contender in the 2000’s. Years that saw rancorous debate on the stadium issue and a number of failed attempts to get funding. In the end, designs that originally called for a retractable roof had to be discarded and more modest plans put forth. Ground was broken on August of 2007 beginning 2½ years of construction.

The building site of the new ballpark in the warehouse district west of downtown was tiny. The architects had to resort to many creative methods to fit a major league ballpark in the available space. A commuter freeway and a railroad line run under the park. Left field adjoins a parking ramp. A new entrance for the county’s garbage-to-energy plant had to be constructed to keep the odorous deliveries from entering the facility directly behind the home plate stands. The stadium that emerged as a result is quirky and compact with fans feeling as if they are right on top of the game. (And in right field, they are.) The aesthetics of the stadium are unique and non-neo-classical. Minnesota limestone sheets the exterior of the stadium and provides interior accents as well. Glass and steel are also prominent in the architecture, paying homage to the downtown area’s many connecting skyways.

Target Field seats 40,000 although only 13,500 are upper deck seats. A plaza leading into the stadium from downtown feeds directly into the open right field bleacher area. Right field also contains an overhang, the Home Run Porch, which protrudes over the field of play and could cause an interesting play or two. The wall in right is quite close (328) and high, (23 feet) mimicking the right field “Baggie” at the Metrodome. Left field in the new ballpark is more attainable for right-handed hitters than at the Metrodome although the power alley quickly juts out to the deepest point of the park just to the left of the 404 marker in center field and should be favorable for doubles and triples for right-handed hitters.

Left field is backed by a double-decked grandstand topped by a mammoth high-definition scoreboard. The team offices (not visible in this rendering) occupy the space between the right field and center field grandstands and are reminiscent of the Western Metal building similarly located in San Diego’s Petco Park. Atop the balconied offices is a party deck featuring a large Budweiser sign. Both the home and visiting bullpens are in left center field and feature a video display board to let the fans know who is warming up.

The center field bating eye is comprised of a stand of Minnesota fir trees. Above it reside “Minnie” and “Paul” the well-known pair of ball players in the Twins long-time logo. The animated pair shake hands in congratulations on each Twins home run – an act noted in the Twins first 2010 TV ad.

Although Target Field was built without a roof, the canopy extending over the upper deck like a gigantic boomerang is extensive and houses the majority of the field lighting within its soffits. The park features the now-standard amenities found in most new ballparks - a season ticket holder's club, team store, and upscale eateries. One unique food option at Target Field will be the Walleye sandwiches at Hrbek's, named for the former Twins first baseman and current outdoor TV host.

Teflon. Great job. The park looks awesome. Glad to see your still out there doing stadiums. I use most of your older stadiums for my leagues and very glad to add this to the collection. Thanks for the hard work and most of all sharing it with the community.

Sorry - I haven't. Target Field is the first ballpark I've done in over a year. The only other real ballparks I've done are SBC in San Francisco and Citizens Bank in Phildelphia which should still be available by searching my posts on the forum. (Also a version of old Metropolitan Stadium which was real once.)

Real ballparks take about 10 times as much work to make as fictional parks because of all the details that have to be accurate and the required searches for realistic skyline photos at the proper angles and perspectives. I can only do them when I'm really motivated. As I get older, sadly, that is less and less.

Unfortunately sad but true. At least we Twins fans are assured of Mauer in the lineup in 2010, so I'm looking forward to at least one great summer sitting in actual atmosphere watching the most perfect swing in baseball.

Teflon, you ought to be working in the Twins PR department. I've loved your ballparks since I first bought OOTP. I've been a Twins rooter for a while, since the New Britain RockCats came to town. It's amazing how many players went on to the big leagues. Morneau, Mauer, Spann and many more. I've been an Eastern League fan for a long time. I've lived near Waterbury and Bristol so I've followed the Pirates, Dodgers, Reds, Giants, A's and Red Sox (saw Lynn and Rice play) plus various teams in West Haven, New Haven and Norwich. I became a Pittsburgh fan because of the local team. So I root for the underdog teams which is hard sandwiched between New York and Boston.

The work you did on this Target Field is of course brilliant, but I wouldn't be disappointed at all if you chose to work on fictionals, considering the difference in work load. For me, fictionals add more to my game experience than a real stadium recreation can do, because when I'm creating a unique league I want to have unique stadiums, and not ones that are obviously real major league stadiums. I just think its very neat that fictionals can be whatever the designer needs them to be, which has resulted in a lot of unique features and stadium designs that really make my fictional league's teams feel completely alive. Every fictional league I've made has been stocked full of stadiums that both you and Blueturf have produced.

Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to any new work you may be able to produce.

This is awesome. I just got done watching the 1987 World Series last week (for the first time) plus I got to see Frankie V up close in 1988 in KC.

Now I'm looking forward to seeing the Twins new park this season.

I'm not really a Twins fan. I just love baseball.

What is everyone using for ballpark factors? Also, a couple of the field dimensions were left off the description by Teflon.

These are great, thank you!

The LC and RC field dimensions aren't available. Rough guesses would be 394 for LC (splitting the difference between 377 in LF and 411 to the deepest park of the park) and 384 for RC splitting the difference between 365 to RF and 403 to just off CF. I've attached an illustration from the Twins website to show the layouts.

The Twins claimed they designed the ballpark to be neutral - but I think factors should reflect the following:

1. Fould territotry is tiny. This should help batting averages some.
2. LF is fairly normal down the line but it takes a deep angle towards CF. I think HR's will be slightly below average for RH hitters. BA may be slightly lower as well but doubles and triples should be more plentiful.
3. RF is short with a high wall. This should mean more HRs for LH hitters like the Metrodome. BA should be somewhat higher too because of some normal flyball outs hitting off the wall. Doubles and triples should be a little less frequent, in my opinion.
