Italy - Bantamweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals:

Mario D'Agata vs Simone Maludrottu - Maludrottu did a good job of keeping D'Agata at bay for a large portion of this fight, showing good heart, but not quite enoug in the skill department as the judges saw it 9-5, 7-7 (odd score) 8-6 for D'Agata.

Casper Leon vs Johnny Vacca - Good tough bout that saw both men have their moments as they took turns taking rounds early on. Leon asserted himself in the championship rounds however to win the 9-6, 9-6, 8-7 decision.

Franco Zurlo vs Kid Francis - Zurlo was wearing Francis down with a patient attack from the outside, making him follow throughout. A cut on the bridge of Francis nose became a gushing gash in the 10th round for the TKO.

Packey O'Gatty vs Piero Rollo - Rollo was dominant throughout the fight landing 49.8% of his punches and building up an insurmountable lead going into the 15th. Unfortunately a cut suffered early in the fight reopened and the fight was stopped 49 seconds into the round to give O'Gatty the suprise TKO on cuts!

Italy - Bantamweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals:

Mario D'Agata vs Packey O'Gatty - D'Agata did everything right in this fight but one thing. He built up a solid lead with controlled agression and was well on his way to a decision (he was up 10-3 on both my card and that of Don Koss. The judges had it 10-4, 10-4, 9-5) when he blatantly began hitting and holding. He was given his 7th foul and was disqualified for the blatant foul handing O'Gatty a prayer of a win!

Casper Leon vs Franco Zurlo - A back and forth fight that saw these warriors accidentally clash heads in the 7th resulted in a cut over the right eye of Leon. In the 12th the cut had become so bad that the fight was stopped and sent to the scorecards. The judges had it 6-4, 7-2, 7-3 for Zurlo! I had it 6-4 for Zurlo, so the decision was just even though I felt it was far closer than 2 of the judges scored it.

Final:

Franco Zurlo vs Packey O'Gatty - Zurlo was in top form throughout the fight moving, then sticking then moving again using his jab to nearly close the left eye of O'Gatty who simply was too slow to cut the ring off effectively. When he did get in close Zurlo punished him with an wicked cross and strong hooks to dominate the fight. The judges scored the bout 10-4, 11-4, 9-5 for Zurlo who will advance to the World Tournament.

Italy - Flyweights - Fight-In

The amount of fighters is the same as The Beatles favorite number....number 9....number 9...... So with 9 fighters we'll have a single fight-in bout.

Fight-In:

Franco Cherchi vs Mercurio Ciaramitaro - A good effort by Ciaramitaro, but Cherchi simply won more of the 1 round fights to win the main fight 9-5, 8-7, 8-6.

Italy - Flyweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals:

Salvatore Burruni vs Franco Cherchi - The number 7 wasn't lucky for Burruni. He dominated the fight, nearly closed both of Cherchi's eyes going into the 15th round. His 7th foul of the fight was using his shoulder to boor in and he was disqualified handing Cherchi the massive upset win. Burruni was up 10-4, 13-1, 12-2 through the 14th round.

Salvatore Fanni vs Franco Sperati - Fanni was well on his way to a dominating performance using his jab and footwork to good effect when in the 13th he opened a bad cut on the forehead of Sperati. It reopened in the 14th and the fight was promptly halted by the ring physician for the TKO for Fanni.

Rocky Gattellari vs Fernando Atzori - War Gattellari! War Atzori! Both men fought at a furious pace but the split decision went to the tough and hard hitting Gattellari by the score of 8-5, 5-7, 8-6.

Aristide Pozzali vs Andrea Sarritzu - Pozzali appeared on the way to a dominant win when a cut opened in the 2nd round over the left eye of Sarritzu reopened for the 3rd time in the 5th to stop the fight for the TKO. Pozzali was up 3-1 on all 3 cards and 4-0 on both my and Javier's scorecard.

Italy - Flyweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals:

Salvatore Fanni vs Franco Cherchi - Cherchi fought much better than expected to build up a lead going into the 14th round (I had him up 7-5 and Dan Cuoco had it 7-4 for Cherchi. The judges had it 7-5, 6-5, 7-6 for Cherchi). Fanni caught Cherchi with a wicked combo near the half way mark of round 14 and Cherchi was unable to beat the count for the come from behind KO!

Rocky Gattellari vs Aristide Pozzali - Pozzali built up a big lead then tried to hold on as the slow starting Gattellari came on like a hurricane! In the end the judges scored it 8-7 Gatellari, 8-6 for Pozzali and 7-7 even for a draw! Rematch to come.

Rematch:

Rocky Gattellari vs Aristide Pozzali - More of the same though this time they went back and forth throughout another solid action packed bout! Neither man was willing to give an inch and it showed in the closeness of the scoring (Lee Crooks and I had it 8-6 for Pozzali). In the end it went to the cards and the judges scored it 8-5, 9-5, 9-5 for the winner Aristide Pozzali!

Final:

Salvatore Fanni vs Aristide Pozzali - Fanni and Pozzali put on quite the performance in this classic boxer-slugger matchup. Fanni used the entire ring and Pozzali kept on top of him cutting him off well at times. In the 3rd Fanni went down and barely beat the count!. In the 9th round they gave a highlight reel round that saw both men raising their hands to a jubulant crowd! In the 10th the slugger Pozzali walked into a perfectly timed hook that dropped Pozzali for the count, handing the boxer the KO win! Fanni moves on to the World Tournament after this thrilling fight!

Italy - Jr. Flyweights - Final

2 warriors makes for a 1 win you're in scenario.

Final:

Vincenzo Belcastro vs Franco Udella - Belcastro was boxing well but Udella was landing the heavier leather. Belcastro suffered cuts under his right eye, on the bridge of his nose, and a split lip. In the 13th the cut on the bridge of the nose forced the bout to end, sending Udella to the World Tournament on the back of a 13th round TKO. I had it 7-6 Belcastro and my co-announcer Javier Aguirre Flores had it 7-3 for Belcastro. The judges had it 7-2, 6-3, 6-4 for Belcastro.

My next post will be a recap of Italy as there are no Straweight entrants.

Jamaica - Heavyweights

We have 5 entrants in the Heavyweight division so will have a fight-in.

Fight-In:

Melton Bowen vs Stanford Harris - Bowen used constant pressure to score 3 knockdowns enroute to a 9-6, 11-3, 9-5 decision.

Semi-Finals:

Owen Beck vs Melton Bowen - Beck was a one man wrecking crew in this one, taking it to Bowen, hurting him badly in the 6th then scoring a knockdown before the fight was stopped in the 6th for the TKO.

Joe Bygraves vs Oliver Wright - Dominating performance by Bygraves. After a slow first round he took every round with ease, scoring 3 knockdowns, including the KO shot in the 11th round.

Final:

Owen Beck vs Joe Bygraves - Beck wore Bygraves down, then scored a knockdown in the 10th. In the 11th, sensing the end he scored 4 more knockdowns before Bygraves was finally counted out! Beck moves on to the World Tournament.

3 fighters in this division gives Glencoffe Johnson the bye.

Semi-Final:

Richard Hall vs Ovill McKenzie - Hall fell behind 5-0 and was cut in the 5th round. He came out looking to end things in the 6th and did some serious damage but Hall survived. McKenzie came out with a vengance in the 7th and battered McKenzie throughout the round for the TKO win!

Final:

Glencoffe Johnson vs Richard Hall - Hall survived a 1st round KO but was unable to get untracked and Johnson punished him so badly in the 4th round that the referee was forced to end things for the TKO. Johnson moves forward to the World Tournament.

Jamaica - Super Middleweight

We have 3 Super Middleweights. Top seeded Otis Grant recieves the bye.

Semi-Final:

Chris Johnson vs Richard Grant - Johnson dictated the pace and Grant landed punches in bunches to punish him for doing so, but it was the pure aggression and power that took the day as Grant won the decision in a very entertaining bout. Mike Hanson and I had it 10-4 for Johnson, and the judges scored it 9-4, 7-7, 11-3 for Johnson by split decision. Most of the fans were booing the 2nd referee. but they were pleased that the right man made it to the next fight.

Final:

Otis Grant vs Chris Johnson - Grant danced as if his life depended on it, keeping the bobbing and weaving Johnson at bay for most of the fight, building up a lead when in the 13th he zigged when he should have zagged and ran into a short hook flush on the temple that sent Grant pitching forward for an 8 count! Johnson waded in for the kill and later in the round landed a huge cross that put Grant out for the count! Johnson moves forward to the World Tournament.
