By the way, this is a supposed contemporary line drawing of Smallwood that I found on a museum portrait web service.

Bit late I know but here is a slightly more pleasing picture of the 'Buckhorse'.

Think I might be following you in on the bare knuckle front soon. I've been building a spreadsheet for the last couple of days which has around 340 fighters in it. I'm about 90 short of files

That's great! I have never seen that pic of the Buckhorse.

Everything that I used here is posted on my site for download but I don't know if you'd necessarily want them I have an excel file too that ties to my note cards on all the fighters that you can have but it is a bit messed up through 1750 or so; after that it is pretty solid in terms of including everyone that I could find from various sources.

REC Downloads

This is the actual download page Tom - these are junk ratings though. I have a set of template ranging from a -17 to +7 that I use for these guys. One one can truly say what the vast majority of them were really like and we have nothing remotely close to complete records so this works for me. They are assigned a template rating on my spreadsheet and that's that. It does mimmick the era in a way though. For a lot of these guys, they may have won some good bouts and then get clobbered by some barrel hauler off the docks of Liverpool. Most can beat just about anyone in the field and the differences between the ratings are enough to shake them all out pretty well over a career.

Hi Christopher

Brilliant thanks!

I didn't realise you had done all this.

When I've finished doing the kids homework I'll have a good look at it!

I just bought a couple of books on the era from ebay, i'll let you know what they are like.

Have you started reading the book on Barclay yet?

I have to finish You Gotta have Wa (about Japanese Baseball) and a book on the Reformation first.

What did you purchase?

The Manly Art by Elliot Gorn

and

Bare Fists by Bob Mee

Though I am halfway through John Keegan's ACW book which I am finding disappointing.

I read Mee's book a while back and enjoyed it. Have never seen Gorn's though. I'll be interested to here if you liked it.

Gallery of the Gallant balloting for 1743 is open. Come have a smoke in the game room at the Royal Explorers Club and have your say in matters.

Brilliant write up Christopher.

I need to start on that 'Bare Fists' book by Bob Mee.

I've looked for a better pic of Smallwood, but no luck.
