I think the coach is right: the fact the media made such a big deal out of this damaged everybody involved more than the game itself.

The refs decision to not allow any subbing of players after the scrum in the second half probably had a lot to do with it. Obviously the Yates players were better conditioned than the Lee squad.

I agree, I thing that decision was a little odd to say the least.

It was odd...if you are going to make some decision like that, go ahead and end the game right there.

The coach is right in that they should be allowed to run their stuff. You can't tell kids to play half speed. I would question, however, how long he left his starters in the game is questionable.

If it is true that the coach & team set a goal before the game to score 200 points and top the State scoring record, then they did cross the line of poor sportsmanship.

I have played on each side of one of these games. As a kid, I would much rather the other team play hard against us the whole time instead of giving up at halftime. It is better for both teams. You can continue to get practice at full speed. Otherwise, why play the whole game?

I think as soon as the Lee team decided to stop trying to score the other team probably would have as well.

I agree, you can't tell a team to stop playing their game. What you can do is have your 3rd stringers run your normal game plan.

The quote right after the game:

Quote:
“I feel very disrespected right now,” Armant told the Houston Chronicle after the game. “I don’t understand why Yates just kept scoring and pressing when they were up so much. These are kids. It isn’t good to do that to other young men.”
The quote after it became a big news:

Quote:
"We don’t have a problem with the score. We teach our team to play hard from the first quarter to the fouth quarter," Armant said. "The media has made this a circus, and it’s sad that every time you turn on the radio, you hear about it. I drive a kid home every day and this kid was so mad, he was like ‘I can’t stand this anymore, turn it off.’ This is just crazy.”
To complain about it right after the game is understandable. You feel really bad after such a big loss.

When the coach actually has more time to think about it, he is OK with it. Right now it's just an over-hyped story good for people to talk all about what they think about sportsmanship with opinions formed way before this ever happened. People are also doing a great job reminding Lee players this painful memory.
