Will he do it?
It's August 1st, he's won batter of the month 3 times out of the possible 4. Easily the best offensive performances I've ever had on my team. His batting average has been below .400 for two days this season, .333 after Opening Day and on May 12th at .397. His OBP has never fallen below .500. He currently leads the NC in BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, RC/27, VORP, Hits, RBI, BBs, and TBs. He's t-3rd in doubles and homers, 4th in triples, 2nd in runs, ISO and XBH. I've got to assume he'll hit .400, but I've never had a player make a legitimate run at it before.
I actually have a ton more talent, most of it defensively, but this team has a ton of crazy stories (including my extremely immature ace striking out 15 in 6.2 innings one game and an average rated (13/11/10 overalls) lefty starter with 7 stamina stepping in for an injured player and posting 1.98 ERA in 95.2 IP thus far with an amazing defense behind him) has easily been my most enjoyable OOTP season ever. I'm definitely considering doing a dynasty report on this going forward so let me know if you'd be interested.

Will he do what? you never asked. As for batting average, I'd say it's highly unlikely that he'll hit over .400

Will he finish the year above .400 was the question, sorry for the confusion.

I love looking at things like this. I always try to follow someone in my league each year and take a deeper look at what they need to meet the criteria.
If he plays 162, and keeps up his current pace of 3.75 ab/g then he'll need to get 77 hits in those projected at-bats to hit .400 (that would be average of .342 down the stretch). If you want to record a .400 season, he really only needs 3.1 plate appearances per team game (502 plate appearances if the team plays 162) to qualify as a league leader and officially go down in the books as a .400 hitter. Your player already has 471 plate appearances, and I'm assuming he may have a SF or HBP or two helping him out as well. That leaves him needing only 31 more plate appearances. If he goes 0 for 31, he would have the 502 plate appearances and hit 0.402 (166/413). I would say you are in the driver's seat with this. It all comes down to how bad you want it! Keep us posted! |

Not only should you NOT sit him, he needs to go like 5-for-7 like Ted Williams did on his last day to hit .400

You have some interesting choices here.
It's your game, play it your way.

I had a guy in one of my online leagues who was approaching .400+ and got hurt.
The news report said two weeks (which would leave him short on PA to qualify), but in game it said one to two weeks. So I was torn between putting him on the 60-day DL (stop his arbitration clock) or gamble that he might come back during the 10-day sim and get enough AB's for a .400+ season. I think I ended up putting him on the DL, so no .400 season, but it also didn't prevent him from getting one year of service time. Oh well, I am pretty sure he did get the ROY. There's always next year! |

Yea, how many games in the season? If 162, its completely up in the air ... there are way too many games remaining to predict. Of course, a .435 gives him a good chance!

It is a 162 game schedule, but I think he's got enough breathing room to complete it. Sitting him hasn't even been a consideration for me, his power is pretty much all I got in my line-up, I got high OBP guys, but he's the only one that's a consistent run producer.

It's August 16th and he's put up his worst stretch all season thus far since I put up the post. In the 14 games he's put up a triple slash line of .269/.397/.500, including a 3/24 slump bringing his average down to .415. He has started to pick it up the last couple of games though which makes that line look a lot better than it was. Last time he had anything that resembled a slump, he went on a tear in the next 16 games and raised he average over 50 points. In the last 3 games he's gone 6/10 and has walked 3 times, so I hopefully it's the start of another tear. I'll keep the updates coming as long as .400 is still a possibility.

I have a guy in my current league this year flirting at the .400 mark all season. He was injured and on the DL for most of the season last year.
After running between ,412 and .403 up to the mid point of August, he has since dipped to .390 with 14 games to go. Still quite the season. |

Quick update, 19 games left and he's sitting at .417, he missed a week to back spasms (I lost 5 games and had two days off in his absence to give you an idea of his importance to my roster), but has come back at his usual pace. With the division wrapped up and one of my top hitters in AAA being a first baseman, I might call him up and bench Hagen if he starts slipping, but more than likely, I'll let him play it out.

He did in fact do it. I got impatient once the division was won and broke my own rule and stopped playing out the games, with the exception of those started by my ace Theodore Joyce. My team finished 113-49, the best record in league history, beating the Angels 108-54 season in 2012. Unlike those Angels, who outperformed their Pythagorean Record by 8 games, we were a true 113 win team. Even more outstanding, the team had a $28,303,800 payroll, lowest in the league by $26,108,092. The team was built on awesome defense, an ace, a superstar hitter, and a bunch of patient hitters.
Hagen hit 43 homers to go with his .411 BA and .521 OBP. Only one other player had 20 or more homers (my second baseman, signed March 21st following an injury to the guy expected to start at second during Spring Training). Only 4, including my second baseman, Li-Zhu Hsiao, and Hagen, hit double digit homers. Despite winning 113 games, I did not have a 20 game winner, my ace, Joyce, won 19 games, struck out 272 and had a 2.95 ERA. I had an awesome bullpen, but aside from Joyce, my other starters were varying degrees of average. So yeah, I don't have to tell you again, this was the coolest OOTP season of my life. I've been playing since OOTP 5, but never before have I been so hooked to a team or a league. I'm extremely motivated to start a dynasty report on this team. Also, for those interested, I got a ton of talent increases from players this year and I attribute that to a good amount of money tied up in a top quality coaching staff, because I have no other explanation. I took over this team after a 75-87 6th place finish and a 5 year history of losing records and no playoff experiences. I cleared out the coaching staff, replaces it and despite a Hard rating, made some shrewd trades, exploiting my strengths and other teams weaknesses and combined that with some smart cheap FA signings and turned this bad team into the best I've managed. For the record, based off the talent on Opening Day, I was shooting for a Wild Card spot, hoping to hang around the division race, but Hagen exploded from the start and changed all expectations. Hopefully a World Series is in the future. Here's the final line for the season:

Oh yeah, one final bit, Hagen was available in 2009 inaugural draft. I let the league play out until this year, but the AI missed out big. In that inaugural draft Hagen was the 1037th player taken and was drafted in the 35th round. Oops...
I'm really interested in the fact that despite average Intelligence and Work Ethic ratings, ratings that most of us put stock into who is going to become stars and who won't, he was able to turn himself from a below average to average 18 year old prospect with a ceiling of an average MLB player, probably below average 1B, to the the player that put up the greatest offensive season I've ever seen. |

Dream season is over, swept in the first round, only managed 2 hits in the final game in a 2-1 loss (allowed back-to-back solo shots in the second, 2 of the only 3 hits I surrendered). I guess those are the breaks. Look for a dynasty report in the coming days.

To bad the season ended on a sour note, but thanks for sharing the .400 season.
