Also unable to patch to 10.4.31 (Mac)

I sent this e-mail to PISD Paul five days ago. Their site suggests a 24 hour wait for a reply, but I'm nearing five times that. I doubt this is an OotP Developments problem, but since PISD won't respond, I'm looking where the light's better:

"I am on an eMac. I am unable to direct the patch to the game. The game is not in the default location (which does not exist on my machine), but in Games>OotP Baseball>OotP Baseball 10>OOTP10.app

The installer isn't giving me any options after getting as far as the Games folder, just to go back up to the next higher level.

I thought it might be simpler to just redownload the entire game, but that didn't work, either. Once again, your installer wants to put the game in a non-existent default location. I tried to direct the installer to where I want the game, and again it wouldn't give me any options below the level of the Games folder. I selected the 'create new folder' option while the Games folder was selected, thinking I could later drag this new folder to where I really want it. Before hitting the button to proceed with the install, I decided not to take anything for granted and checked through the Finder. No new folder was in the Games folder, although your installer thought there was and was prepared to install the game there.

I have no idea why your installer is so insistent upon trying to do installations to places that don't exist, nor why it refuses to install to places that do exist, but until you figure out what's going on, I can't update my game."

Hope someone here can help. And I STRONGLY suggest that, due to this and other unrelated problems that have received voluble airing up in General Discussions, for OotPB11 you dump PISD and go back to eSellerate for Mac licenses. I never had problems with eSellerate.

I had this happen to me one of the times I did a patch during beta testing (there were multiple patches beyond the ones that went public. I let the installer install in the default location, then manually moved the files that were installed that way over to my game location. After that, I haven't had any problems with the installer. I don't know why the problem occurred that one time. No one else seemed to have a similar problem at the time. So, it makes me think it was a localized problem -- something that got corrupted about the game folder on my Mac.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for trying, Steve. The problem is that it wants to install to a place that doesn't exist. When I try to search for it, nothing comes up.

I believe it wants to install to the Documents Folder (it's been awhile, so I'm working off memory here). Documents would be a standard folder in MacOSX. Is it possible you do not have a Documents Folder (it would be in your user Folder)?

Where do you download files to? Will it install in that location? Do you use anti-virus software (I haven't used any for years and years, but it's worth asking)? Are you saying that the installer can't find anything it will agree to install in?

Are you trying to install the complete game or just the patch? If the latter, try downloading the complete game.

By the way, I should have mentioned that any work-around you try, you should de-license first before you move files around (if it turns out that something works).

Can you post a screen shot of what your screen looks like with the installer running?

I'm just throwing out ideas here. I think the problem you are having is very localized, which makes it tough to diagnose. I have OOTP functions (not license related) that have never worked on my Mac, yet do work for others -- and I can't figure out any reason for it, even though I've tried lots of experiments. Nor do I expect that anyone else will ever figure out the reason.

I do have a documents folder.

Most files download to the Downloads folder. OotP stuff downloads initially to the desktop, then it needs to be directed from there. I want to direct it to the Games folder.

I've tried both ways. Both end up in someplace Finder Search can't find.

At the moment I can't de-license because I'm being told I'm in demo mode, so the de-license option is greyed out.

How do I make a screen shot? (I'm in 10.5 now.)

Can you elaborate on this? Here are the stages in the process:

1. Download tar file
2. Open (de-compress) tar file, which installs the installer and associated files.
3. Run installer to install the game or patch files.

When in this process are things breaking down. Your earlier posts suggested that you got to #3 OK, but that the installer wouldn't let you install anything anyplace. When you say that "both end up ... someplace" what you do you mean by that? Do you mean that the installer is letting you install, but you can't find what it installed?

It breaks down in step 3. By default it installs both the game and the patch to a place I can't find. I don't know how to be clearer than that. It seems to be installing them to limbo.

And I can't seem to get it to install anywhere but the default location.

So let's check out one more thing. In your Documents Folder, you should find a folder called Out of the Park Developments, with a folder inside that is called OOTP Baseball 10. Even though you may have moved that folder into your Games folder at some point in the past, OOTP will recreate that folder in your Documents folder. It does that because that is where one or two hidden files are located. If you look in that OOTP Baseball 10 folder, what do you see? One possibility is that you will see nothing (because the files that are there, if any, are hidden). But maybe you will see something there.

If it appears blank, then you do indeed have a mystery, though I still think it is a solvable one.

And THAT is probably where the problem lies. There is no such folder in Documents. There was one, but there no longer is. Presumably the installer is installing to this no-longer-existing (or possibly invisible) folder. If it is invisible, how do I make it visible again?

By 'no such folder' I mean no Out of the Park developments folder and no OOTP Baseball 10 folder.

Let's not get too excited. It's all just info. There are a variety of possible reasons why you don't have this folder. The only thing I can say for sure is that when you license again (you said you are in demo mode) the game will create that folder if it doesn't exist already.

So, you do have a mystery. I will see if I can re-create what you are experiencing. Stand by.

OK, as I suspected, when I downloaded the patch and let it install in it's "default" location, it re-created a Out of the Park Developments/OOTP Baseball 10 Folder in my Document Folder and installed the patch files in there. So, for some reason, that isn't happening when you run the installer. In your search, have to tried looking for any place there might be a OOTP Baseball 10 Folder?

Just the obvious one in Games. Let me try running the installer again.

Thank you very much, Steve. Things seem to be good now. I had to re-import my 2006 game, but the game started in the earlier version of 2010 was retained. I do seem to've lost my first license, but the second one worked.

The only remaining issues are: What is that icon on my desktop? Is it the game (in which case I should move it), or is it an alias (in which case I can trash it)?

And what do I do with the folder in Documents? Do I need to drag any of it to Games? Delete it? Just pretend it doesn't exist?

Anyway, I'm now very satisfied with my OOTP Developments experience — pretty good from a guy who doesn't work for the company. Still not happy with PISD, but that's not under your purview.

The first license isn't lost. It's just that the PISD system thinks it is still in use. You should go to their web site and ask to have it released. This is worth doing, and shouldn't be a problem.

I am 99% certain that it is an alias. The installer does this in default mode. You can check by clicking on it and then clicking on Get Info.

If we are talking about the Folder I described before -- the one that is titled Out of the Park Developments, with another folder inside that is titled OOTP Baseball 10 -- do not trash it! It contains at least one hidden file.

IMHO, don't be too quick to assign blame in one direction. I will admit to having some significant frustrations with the licensing system. However, in my experience, the guys have been pretty diligent about fixing problems that were systemic in nature -- that is, which affected lots of Mac users. It's also clear to me that PISD isn't making all the decisions on how their security system is used or incorporated into the game. So, it makes sense to cut the guys some slack. I have.

Okay, I'm no Mac-guy, but I've read the last few posts and can't clearly identify what was determined to be the solution. Can one of you summarize for me?

Ugh. The solution was that the installer scattered OotPB stuff around to three different places on my computer. Some (which I have now moved to Games) went to Applications, some to Documents, and some (not just the alias) to the desktop. The desktop stuff is now gone, and upon advice of counsel I won't touch what's in Documents. Lord only knows what it is or why it's there.

10.3.whatever had only the invisible stuff Steve referred to in Documents, at least on my computer, but what's there now is quite visible and seems to duplicate data files in the actual game.

As to why the computer's internal search program was unable to find either the patch or the updated game in October, I don't know. We may never know. I think next year I might just wait until the final patch comes out to download the thing for the first time. Since PISD took over, patching has been far more problematic for me than installing.

BTW
This is not just a MAC thing.
The Windows version also installs files into about 3 different places.

Well, I agree we'll probably never know how all this got mangled and then got fixed, so to close the loop here:

Since you are running the game in your own chosen location (which I do as well), you should have OOTP folders/files in only two locations:

1. Everything you can see should be in your chosen game folder location.

2. You need to keep the OOTP folder(s) that you see in your Documents folder, but they should be empty (or appear to be empty). The files you see there now are duplicates and can be trashed.

Obviously, you should have been able to choose your OOTP folder (the folder, not the app) in your game folder as the place for the patch, in which case there would have been no problem. Hopefully, if there is a future patch, this will be what happens for you.
