When are 'vacation settings' used?

I keep noticing that the AI keeps changing my roster. Generally I manage most of my games. But, occasionally, I don't want to manage a particular game, so I press "Quick Play " instead of "Manage" on the schedule page.

Twice now I've noticed that the game has reset my big-league roster, putting players on the big-league roster that I had in the minors, and in one case exposing a player to waivers by sending a player with no options left down to the minors. I think I've narrowed this down to it happening when I press Quick Play.

I have all the Options set for me to control the team. But, I did have the Computer AI set to control the team when on 'vacation'.

Does pressing Quick Play put me on vacation for a few hours? When do you go on 'vacation'. I'm used to that terminology from Football Manager, but I don't seem to see a 'Go on Vacation' option in OOTP.

So, when are the 'vacation' settings used? Does a GM deciding not to hands-on manage a single game mean he's completely relinquishing control of who's on the big-league roster?

Vacation mode is mostly for online league play. You can turn vacation mode on if you are going on vacation for a couple weeks and the AI will make moves for you while the league sims move forward. Otherwise, nothing happens and you end up with injured players not getting replaced, etc...

If you are just playing solo play at home, this box should not ever be checked.

OK .... so why is the game taking over my team and rearranging my rosters whenever I hit "Quick Play" for a game?

Well...it could be a couple things I guess. The most common thing is that you are playing in Commissioner Mode but are acting as a different team (i.e. 'Act as...' at the top right of the screen says a team that is not your team). Commissioner Mode is toggled on/off from a checkbox on the Manager Options page (tab from Manager Home). IIRC on the Manager Home, I think there are some settings for how much the AI does for you - make sure none of those are set to AI make roster moves for you.

If it is none of these, try clicking 'Finish Today' when you are simming instead of the quick-play option. To my knowledge, this should be no different, but maybe there is a problem.

Let us know if you need more guidance.

Of course, I checked all of those settings myself long before I took the desperate and almost certainly hopeless act of posting out here looking for help.

I'm not in commissioner mode. I know where that is. Its not checked. And I've been over and over the Manager Options trying to find out how to keep the game from doing this. The reason I started out asking about the 'vacation' settings' is because I'm on exactly the screen you refer to, I've got everything under "team control settings" set to control my team myself, and yet I still keep finding that the game is rearranging my rosters. 'vacation settings' was the only thing I was seeing that might possibly apply. I did have those settings on "Computer AI" in case I decided to auto-sim a length of time.

Just noticed that I've lost two hard-earned open spots on my 40 man roster this way. I'd gotten that down to 38 players, and was trying hard to save those openings for future needs ... most likely before next year's Rule 5 draft. Now, I'm back to having 40 players on the 40 man roster.

So, what's causing the game to reset my rosters, promote players from the minors, and fill up my 40-man roster spots?

I can't think of any reason other than that you've got some sort of corruption/bug in your copy of the game. You could try going to your team's home page\options page and checking the "prevent AI roster changes" to see if that acts as a work-around. You could also try de-licensing, downloading the game and re-installing.

I was afraid you were going to say that.

I don't have any great ideas either. Maybe post screenshots of your manager home and options pages and somebody will pick something up. Could be corruption too, as Steve suggested.
