Stories of spring
Dalton, Great Barrington hope to keep winning as season opens

Spring training games don't count in the standings, but they're still baseball. That's what fans of the Dalton Millers and Great Barrington Electrics are saying, as their teams break camp after a successful pre-season.

The Millers posted the best record in the Berkshire League this spring, a spiffy 18-6. The Electrics, 14-10, finished one game ahead of South Division rivals Stockbridge and Lee.

Last year's Outstanding Hitter, 1B Craig Smith of Pittsfield, picked up where he left off, and then some. Smith cracked 31 hits in 66 spring at-bats, good for a .370 average. Smith drove in 15 runs, second only to Dalton 1B Mark Esser.

Dalton outfielder James Parrish hit .371 with three homers, and slugged .645. Esser and Smith also posted slugging percentages over .600.

Millers reliever Dan Corbett looked good this spring, with a 5-0 record and a 1.59 ERA. The 32-year-old veteran lefty has seen only limited action since joining the Dalton club in 1966, but it looks like he could be in a Millers uniform for good.

Pittsfield's Jack Griffin, a four-time All-Star, is poised for another fine season. He struck out 17 hitters in 14 innings of work.

The Berkshire Baseball League begins its regular season today. The 84-game regular season will end on August 24, and the division champions will then meet in the best-of-seven Berkshire Series.

Two weeks into the Berkshire Baseball League season, the North Adams Presidents are serving notice that they'll be a tough team to beat. Winners of ten of their first 13 games, the Presidents have opened up a three-game lead in the North Division standings.

Speedy CF Rocky Chappell has made the most of his opportunities to drive in runs, knocking home 11 in 13 games. Third baseman Raphael Cote, a fixture in the North Adams lineup since 1963, is off to a great start, hitting .370. The biggest reason for North Adams' early success is the outstanding performance of their pitching staff, best in the league with a 2.37 team ERA.

The South Division's early leaders are the Lenox Tycoons (9-4), who have featured a potent balance of pitching, defense, and hitting.

Stockbridge fans haven't had many victories to applaud--their Indians are 4-9--but if they made their way up U.S. 7 to Williamstown on June 4, they got to see Fred Collier shut out the Scholars, 12-0. They could also enjoy the hitting exploits of SS Bob Jones, who leads the league with 13 RBI.

Nobody's too surprised to see Dalton righthander Ernesto Jimenez among the league's top pitchers. "The Anvil" has three wins already, and he's struck out 27 men in 21 innings while walking only two.

This seems like a lot of work. I hope you get it going for a couple seasons.

You're right; it probably will involve quite a bit of work. I'll have to create all the players for football and basketball, and that will take a while. Right now, I think it will eventually be worth it. I can imagine this project turning out to be a lot of fun, with just the right amount of "immersion potential."

The most difficult thing about making this more than a one-year project will be re-rating the football and basketball players. Since neither Action PC game features a career mode, I'll have to age the players myself. I'm thinking I might watch how each athlete ages in OOTP, and use his rate of decline as a guide when I re-rate him in his other sports.

Right now, I really wish there were games for football, basketball, and hockey that included the ability to create imaginary "universes" and a career mode. Lots of games I play feature one of these; I can create my own leagues in Action PC games, for instance, and Eastside Hockey Manager has a career/franchise mode. However, I'm forced to use a "real world" hockey universe in EHM, and Action PC Football dropped its career mode several versions ago. If there's a game out there that does both, I'm not familiar with it. If I were, I'd buy it and play it as much as I play OOTP.

Just a quick update-- I've been busy with a bunch of things, and haven't had much time for OOTP lately. This dynasty is far from dead, however, and I wanted to let whatever readers are our there that there will be updates coming soon.
