England - Super Middleweights Semi-Finals & Finals
Semi-Finals:
Nigel Benn vs Richie Woodhall - The fans were on their feet throughout most of this fight as Woodhall was not intimidated by the highly reguarded Benn. None the less, Benn gradually wore him down as he pulled ahead before scoring his first knockdown in a great 11th round! Then in the 14th Woodhall was knocked out of the ring, and was unable to answer the count of 10 in time! Chris Eubank vs Carl Froch - Eubank spent the night making Froch look amateurish as he literally boxed his ears off, using the entire ring while landing an amazing 60.9% of his punches to only 20.3% for Froch. The judges scored the bout 12-3, 11-4, 12-3 to set up the Finals against the 2 top seeds. Final: Nigel Benn vs Chris Eubank - Benn was patient, stalking the clever Eubank. Effectively cutting off the ring, he nearly closed both eyes, then in the 14th cut his eyebrow then scored a pair of knockdowns, with the final one being for the count of 10 with 22 seconds left in the round! Benn moves forward to the World Tourney, and is expected to go deep into the field. |

England - Middleweights Round 1
We have 39 entrants at the Middleweight class. Round 1 will be 7 single bouts among the lowest seeds to set the field at 32.
Round 1: George Aldridge vs BB Baird - Aldridge has little trouble with Baird, winning each of the first 7 rounds handily before scoring a pair of knockdowns, including the finishing blow for an 8 KO. Steven Bendall vs Bill Chesterfield Goode - At first it looked like Bendall would allow Goode to stay in this fight, when suddenly in the 4th he landed a perfect uppercut to turn the lights out for Goode. Les McAteer vs Gary Logan - After a slow first round, McAteer came out throwing bombs, catching Logan in the 2nd and 3rd with wicked hooks that floored him. The final one resulted in a KO in the 3rd for McAteer! Ryan Rhodes vs Wayne Shepherd - It was a rocky time for Shepherd against the hard itting Rhodes as he went down early and was pummeled throughout this 8 round TKO. Lee Blundell vs Ted Pritchard - Blundell didn't fight a bad fight, as he was far more accurate than Pritchard, but he couldn't find an answer to Prichard's power as he went down 3 times in a very close fight. The judges scored the bout 8-7, 8-7, 9-6 for the upset winner Ted Pritchard! Anthony Diamond vs Billy Ellaway - Ellaway kept a blistering pace against Diamond. The pressure paid off when in the 7th round where both men were toe to toe, much to the delight of the fans in attendance, Ellaway landed a powerful hook off Diamond's temple that ended things for the KO! Jack Palmer vs Dido Plumb - Plumb breaks open a close fight with a pair of knockdowns in the 14th, the final one for the count!

England - Middleweights Round 2
Round 2:
Bob Fitzsimmons vs Ted Pritchard - Fitzsimmons used this bout to work on his boxing skills, using the entire ring to his advantage. He dropped Pritchard in the 6th, then again for the 10 count in the 7th. Howard Eastman vs Billy Ellaway - Ellaway used low blows in the first 2 rounds to slow Eastman. In the 3rd after yet another low blow the referee had seen enough, diqualifying Ellaway and handing Eastman the victory. Randy Turpin vs Dido Plumb - Turpin got off to a slow start in the first 2 rounds but took over and dominated the 3rd and the 4th when he scored the KO blow. Jock McAvoy vs Charles Toff Wall - McAvoy wasted little time with Charles Toff Wall, scoring a KO at the 2:51 mark in round 1. Michael Watson vs Steven Bendall - Watson bloodied Bendall early, and dominated 5 of the first 6 rounds including a knockdown in the 6th. Bendall came out in the 7th and took over, hurting Watson early and often when suddenly Watson uncorked a wild hook from nowhere to knock Bendall down and steal the round! (This match at 25-19 is a candidate for round of the year!) In the 8th, the first punch Watson threw busted open the cut on Bendall's brow to end things in a disappointing fashion for the fans. 8 TKO Watson. Lew Lazar vs Les McAteer - McAteer withstood the windmill attack of Lazar with clever boxing, landing more punches than Lazar throughout despite throwing less than half the punches, he kept control of a very close match to win 8-7, 12-2, 9-6 and pull off the upset against the #6 seeded Lazar. Alan Minter vs Ryan Rhodes - Minter was dominating at times, lax at others until he exploded with a pair of knockdowns in the 14th, the 2nd for the KO win. the scores were 8-4, 7-5, 7-5 at the time of the stop. Johnny Pritchett vs George Aldridge - Pritchett survived a blistering start by Aldridge to turn things around in a grueling 6th round that saw both men having puffy orbs (25-18, another candidate for round of the year!) Aldridge then came back strong in the 7th and 8th, scoring the lone knockdown. When Pritchett got up from that, it seemed the energy was sapped from Aldridge as Pritchett took over the latter stages of the match to win 7-6, 6-6, 7-6 by majority decision. Terry Downes vs Anthony Farnell - Good action fight that saw both men go toe to toe until the 4th when Downes landed several hard shots that had Farnell nearly out on his feet. The referee stopped the bout (most felt a tad early) to protect Farnell from further damage, 4 TKO for Downes. Kevin Finnegan vs Vince Hawkins - A rather dull fight with many close rounds due to inaction by both fighters. Fortunately we were spared a rematch as the judges scored it 7-4, 6-8, 8-6 for Hawkins by split decision. Tony Sibson vs Pat McAteer - Sibson got off to a slow start, but took over with a pair of knockdowns in the 3rd that lead to the 3 TKO over McAteer. Jewey Cook vs Ted Moore - What was a close tactical fight was ended in the 13th when Moore busted open a cut over the right eye of Cook. the scores were 5-6, 6-6, 6-5 through 12. Herol Graham vs Mark Rowe - Graham dominated, scoring 3 knockdowns, though Rowe fought quite well at times. The referee's scored it 12-3, 9-5, 10-4 for Graham. Charley Mitchell vs Wally Beckett - Grueling battle between 2 warriors that refused to give an inch. This caused a lot of headbutting unfortunately, and caused a huge gash over Mitchell's eye that ended the fight early and sent it to the judges in the 10th. They scored it 4-2, 2-5, 4-3 for Mitchell by split decision. Harry Scott vs Bunny Sterling - Lot of close rounds in a sleeper of a fight. At times there was more action in the stands. At the end we ended up going to the judges who scored it 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 for the winner, Bunny Sterling. Dick Turpin vs Johnny Sullivan - Turpin used superior ring generalship to keep Sullivan at bay throughout his pedestrian 15 round decision. The judges scored it 10-4, 11-4, 12-2 for Turpin. |

England - Middleweights Round 3
Round 3:
Bob Fitzsimmons vs Les McAteer - Fitzsimmons spent the first 2 rounds peppering McAteer from outside, then landed a wicked cross off the top of his head to start the 3rd. Another knockdown and several hard shots later, the referee had seen enough. 3 TKO for Fitzsimmons. Howard Eastman vs Vince Hawkins - Eastman scored a pair of knockdowns early, and pretty much had his way with Hawkins throughout, but the penultimate blow was a hard hook to the jaw that put Hawkins away for the 15th round KO. Randy Turpin vs Ted Moore - Turpin scored a pair of knockdowns while coasting to a 13-2, 12-2, 12-2 decision over Moore. Jock McAvoy vs Bunny Sterling - Sterling scored a knockdown in the 5th for the count of 9, only to have McAvoy storm back with 4 knockdowns of his own enroute to a 10-2, 9-3, 8-5 decision. Michael Watson vs Dick Turpin - Turpin put forth a good effort, but couldn't handle Watson's power as he went down 4 times, including 2 times in the fatal 12th round. He got up from both, but wasn 't able to defend himself so the referee stopped the punishment for the TKO by Watson. Alan Minter vs Herol Graham - Minter scored a knockdown for the count of 8 in the 2nd but couldn't put Graham away. He continued to pile on the points, but ran out of gas half way through, and Graham outboxed him the rest of the way for a narrow 7-6, 7-7, 9-6 majority decision. Johnny Pritchett vs Charley Mitchell - Pritchett was well ahead when he landed a clean hook to the jaw of Mitchell and put him down for the count in the 13th. Terry Downes vs Tony Sibson - Good action in this fight that saw Sibson go down twice, but storm back each time to keep the fight close. Downes was able to open a cut right on Sibson's hairline that bled so profusely that the doctor ordered the bout halted in the 13th. Downs was ahead 6-5, 5-6, 6-5 in what was still a wide open fight!

England - Middleweights Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Bob Fitzsimmons vs Herol Graham - Graham tried to keep things close, and despite an amazing 9 knockdowns by Fitzsimmons he kept getting up and fighting on. Finally in the 14th, Fitzsimmons was able to put the courageous Graham out for the count! At the time of the stop the judges scored it 10-4, 7-7, 8-6. Amazing that it would be that close with all those knockdowns! Howard Eastman vs Terry Downes - Eastman was dominating, leading 5-2 on all 3 cards including a knockdown in the 8th round. Near the end of the 8th however Downes landed a jab that bust open Eastman's left eyelid, tearing it so badly that the doctor ordered the fight stopped for the upset TKO! Randy Turpin vs Johnny Pritchett - Pritchett was cut early on, and the cut remained open as he and Turpin battled toe to toe in the 7th however the claret flow was so bad that the doctor ended things for the 7 TKO for Turpin. the scores were 3-3, 3-3, 4-2 Turpin at the time. Jock McAvoy vs Michael Watson - Dull fight for the first 10 rounds, but the action picked up with McAvoy scoring 3 knockdowns and Watson 2 in the last 5 rounds. It went to the judges, who scored the bout 7-6, 7-8, 8-7 for the winner McAvoy! I had it 8-6 for Watson.

England - Middleweights Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Bob Fitzsimmons vs Terry Downes - Fitzsimmons came out throwing bombs against Downes right from the start. He sent Downes crashing into the ropes then rained punches down unmercifully until the referee ended things at 2:45 in the 1st round for a TKO win. Randy Turpin vs Jock McAvoy - Turpin survived 3 knockdowns in the first 5 rounds, then turned things around as McAvoy had punched himself out. He moved fluidly from there on, popping jabs and combos seemingly at will to pull out the come from behind decision 8-6, 7-7, 8-6. Final: Bob Fitzsimmons vs Randy Turpin - Turpin used superior handspeed and excellent footwork to avoid Fitzsimmon's power, using his rapier like jab to open several cuts on "Ruby Robert". A cut under the eye of Fitzsimmons turned into such a gash that in the 11th round the doctor called for the halt to give Turpin a major upset! Turpin was up 6-3 on 2 cards and behind 5-4 on the other. Turpin will be the English representative in the World Tourney. |

England - Jr. Middleweights - Quarter-Finals
We have 8 fighters for the Jr. Middleweight weight class:
Quarter-Finals: Maurice Hope vs Kirk Davis - Dominating performance by Hope as he knocks Davis down late in the 4th, then destroys him in the 5th before scoring the 5 KO. Richard Williams vs Wayne Alexander - Alexander dominates the #2 seeded Williams before his right orb became so swollen in the 12th that the fight was called to a halt. Alexander was up 10-1, 10-1, 9-2 at the time. Nicky Wilshire vs Steve Roberts - Wilshire scores 3 knockdowns, including 2 in the 15, the last one right at the bell to save Roberts and send it to the score cards. While Roberts acquitted himself admirably, Wilshire was the stronger, winning 9-6, 9-6, 8-6. Adrian Stone vs Gary Stretch - Neither man was particularly impressive, but Stone did enough to win 9-4, 8-6, 9-4. I had it 8-7 for Stone. |

England - Jr. Middleweights -Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Maurice Hope vs Wayne Alexander - Hope threw twice as many punches as Alexander, landed more than 3 times as many punches and landed the stronger punches with 3 knockdowns enroute to a dominating 12-3, 14-1, 12-2 decision. Nicky Wilshire vs Adrian Stone - Wilshire handled Stone with applomb though Stone had some good moments before he was knocked down 2 times in the 7th round, the final one for the count of 10. Wilshire had a 4-2 lead on all 3 cards at the time. Final: Maurice Hope vs Nicky Wilshire - Hope came out fast, hurting Wilshire then keeping the pressure on, sensing the kill early. Throughout the round Hope stayed on top of his man until a wild right hook landed flush on the chin of Wilshire putting him down and out with 17 seconds left in the round! In winning the Jr. Middleweight berth he landed 56-85 punches. |

England - Welterweights Fight-In
We have 19 fighters in the Welterweight division. There will be 3 fight-in bouts to set the field at 16:
James Hare vs Jack Bennett - Hare & Bennett fought back and forth with Bennett scoring the only knockdown in a round that Hare was leading. After 15 rounds I had it 7-7 as neither man overly impressed me. The judges scored it 9-5, 7-7, 8-6 for the winner James Hare. Matthew Hatton vs Peter Buckley - Hatton battered Buckley around the ring throughout, scoring 3 knockdowns and cutting him badly on his left eyelid. It was the cut that ended things early as in the 9th round the cut was absolutely horrid to look at. I had Hatton ahead 7-1 throught 8, the judges had it 7-0, 7-1, 4-2. Tony Smith vs Tom Henry - It was all about work effort as Smith more than doubled Henry's output throughout in winning a 12-2, 12-2, 12-2 decision. |

England - Welterweights Round 1
Round 1:
Ted Kid Lewis vs Tony Smith - Lewis starts the tourney strong, dominating Smith throughout. In the 8th he scored a right hook that floored Smith, and while he rose from it, he wasn't able to recover and the referee stopped it later in the round for the TKO by Lewis. The judges had it 6-1 on all 3 cards at the time. Lloyd Honeyghan vs Matthew Hatton - Honeyghan suffered a bad cut from an inadvertant butt in the first round, but didn't let it stop him from dominating Hatton. In the 5th he floored Hatton, then in the 7th the cut reopened and the fight was stopped. Since the cut was from the accidental butt, the decision went to the judges who scored it 4-2, 4-2, 5-1 for the winner, Honeyghan. John H Stracey vs James Hare - Stracey started out solid, winning the first round handily, getting off first against the plodding Hare. In the 2nd round Stracey's power kicked in as he scored the KO at the 1:57 mark! Ralph Charles vs Bob Smith - Smith landed more punches, was more accurate, but Charles landed the more telling blows in winning the 8-6, 9-4, 10-5 unanimous decision. Ernie Roderick vs Wally Thom - A good and close action bout here, with Thom being cut over both eyes, which cost him the fight in the 9th when the left eye's cut became unmanageable in the eyes of the ringside doctor. The judges had it 5-3, 3-5, 5-3 for Roderick through 8 rounds. Peter Waterman vs Dave Green - Green knocked the favored Waterman down in the 1st, 2nd and finally the 3rd for the 10 count and the first upset of this tourney. Matt Wells vs Michael Jennings - Not a lot of action in this one that saw Jennings receive a cut over his left eye from an accidental butt. The fight went to the cards, and the judges scored it 3-2 on each card in favor of Wells. Jawaid Khaliq vs Bernie Terrell - Terrell survived an early knockdown to out box and out fox Khaliq through 15 dull rounds. The judges scored the bout 9-5, 9-6, 9-5 for Terrell. |

England - Welterweights Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Ted Kid Lewis vs Dave Green - Lewis dominated this one despite losing 2 points to fouls on rounds he was going to win. Green was cut badly both over and under his left orb as well as over the right orb when it was stopped on cuts in the 15th with Lewis ahead 11-2, 9-3, 9-3. Lloyd Honeyghan vs Bernie Terrell - This was close until the 5th round, when Honeyghan scored 4 knockdowns. Terrell got up from all 4 but was on his way down for a 5th when the referee stepped in and caught him to end the fight! John H Stracey vs Ralph Charles - Stracey took the first 6 rounds with ease, frustrating Charles the entire time, leading to an obvious and totally blatant low blow that cost Charles the fight on a DQ. Ernie Roderick vs Matt Wells - One sided yet dull affair that saw Roderick using his movement and faster hands to keep Wells at bay. Wells didn't show much skill in cutting Roderick off, and it showed in the scores, 11-3, 14-1, 12-3 for Roderick. |

England - Welterweights Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Ted Kid Lewis vs Ernie Roderick - Roderick provided Lewis with his stiffest test yet, keeping it close for the most part until his bloodied eye cut the night short in the 8th round. The judges had it 6-1, 3-4, 5-2 for Lewis through 7. Lloyd Honeyghan vs John H Stracey - This one had all the earmarks of being a barnburner, and round's 1 and 2 didn't dissapoint as both rounds were dead even rounds that had the crowd howling for more. In the 3rd, Stracey started getting to the favored Honeyghan, rocking him with several shots that had the referee considering ending it near the end of the round. Honeyghan came roaring back in the 5th, scoring the fight's lone knockdown the litterally pounding Stracey into submission before the referee did end it at the 2:41 mark for the TKO. Final: Ted Kid Lewis vs Lloyd Honeyghan - Lewis started out strong, nearly having Honeyghan out on his feet in both the 5th and 6th rounds. He wasn't able to finish the deal, and Honeyghan came roaring back, finally ending it in the 11th round when it was obvious that Lewis was unable to defend himself. The judges had it 5-4 Lewis, 5-5, 5-5 through the first 10 rounds of this exciting fight! Honeyghan pulls off a slight upset to move into the World Tourney! |

England - Jr. Welterweights Round 1
We have 15 fighters in this weight class. Top seeded Ricky Hatton will recieve a bye.
Round 1: Jack Kid Berg vs Arv Mittoo - Berg was a windmill, landing more punches (over 100 more) than Mittoo threw in this dominating performance that culminated in a knockdown early in the 10th followed by the referee ending things for the health of Mittoo. 10 TKO for Berg. Amir Khan vs Clinton McKenzie - Total domination from Khan as he scores 5 knockdowns before the referee finally ends things in the 10th round for the TKO. Terry Marsh vs Jason Rowland - Marsh was decidedly unimpressive against the underdog Rowland, allowing him a chance to stay in the fight, and nearly stealing it. In the end the judges scored it 8-6, 9-6, 9-6 for Marsh, but it could have gone the other way just as easily. Junior Witter vs Colin Lynes - Witter was dominating through most of the fight, though Lynes nearly had him out on his feet in an impressive 9th round. Unfortunately Lynes left it all in the 9th round, and was put down 2 times before being stopped by TKO in the 12th. Shea Neary vs Johnathon Thaxton - Sometimes a referee will leave you scratching your head saying "huh?". This was one of them. After a slow 1st round that Neary seemed to get the better of, he clashed heads in what appeared to be in intentional butt. This was the first foul of the fight for either man, yet Neary was immediately disqualified much to the chagrin of everyone in attendance. Vic Andreetti vs Lenny Daws - Daws was cut early in this one, on the inside of his right eye. He didn't let that daunt him however, as he boxed beautifully against the agressive Andreetti, building up a nice lead despite the cut being reopened several times. Unfortunately in the 12th it was reopened yet again and this time the ringside doctor halted things to give Andreetti the come from behind 12 TKO. Daws was up 7-4, 6-5, 6-4 through 11. Ashley Theophane vs Nigel Wright - Despite an knockdown in the 4th, Theophane was moving well and throwing very accurate punches, building up a 4-2 lead on all 3 cards when Wright stunned him in the 7th early, then went into windmill mode, landing bomb after bomb until he finally landed the perfect uppercut for the count of 10 and a 7 KO!

England - Jr. Welterweights Quarter-Finals
Quarter Finals:
Ricky Hatton vs Johnathon Thaxton - Hatton was pure pressure against Thaxton, who tried to stand in there, making for a thrilling fight early on. Thaxton faded early however, and went down 5 times, with the 5th being a KO in the 11th. The judges scorecards while accurate at 8-1, 8-1, 7-2 didn't reflect the courage that Thaxton displayed! Jack Kid Berg vs Nigel Wright - Berg boxed the perfect fight, luring Wright into little traps all night long as he dominated the action. Unfortunately there was a clash of heads in the 10th, and after the lone knockdown by Berg in the 15th, the cut over Wright's eye reopened to end the fight. The 15 Technical Decision was scored 12-1, 11-2, 12-1 for Berg. Terry Marsh vs Vic Andreetti - Marsh boxed a patient defensive fight against Andreetti, enough to win rounds, but not fans as he piled up the rounds. In the 11th, with Andreetti obviously spent, he changed up and took the fight to Andreetti, hitting him with bombs throughout the round until the referee ended it for the TKO! Amir Khan vs Junior Witter - Through the first 6 rounds the fight was even, with Khan having some serious swelling around his right orb. His corner sent him out on a seek and destroy mission in the 7th and he connected, then followed up keeping Witter reeling throughout the round! In the 8th, he continued the assault with even more telling blows as Witter obviously didn't recover from the previous round. Finally Witter was saved further damage when the referee mercifully stepped in to stop the carnage! |

England - Jr. Welterweights Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Ricky Hatton vs Amir Khan - Absolutely amazing fight with both men going back and forth throughout. Hatton scored the lone knockdown, and won the fight 9-6, 8-7, 8-7 despite Khan dominating the 15th round looking for a knockout. Both men met at ring center and embraced warmly after this sparkling exhibition of pugilism! Jack Kid Berg vs Terry Marsh - Berg walked into a Marsh hook on the very first punch of the fight then held on to barely survive the first round! He then went defensive, punishing Marsh for moving in so swiftly for the next several rounds, then they wen't back and forth the rest of the fight. In the end, despite the lone knockdown, the judges scored it 8-7, 9-6, 8-7 for the favorite Berg! Final: Ricky Hatton vs Jack Kid Berg - Berg put on a boxing clinic in this one, controling the pace throughout. He landed an amazing 628 of 1218 punches (51.6) while only allowing 211 of 1108 (19.0%) by Hatton. Hatton's problem was eye swelling as both eyes were swelling badly half way through the fight, and his corner was concerned about the fight being ended at any time so he was sent out for the KO for the second half of the fight every round. This allowed Berg to pick his man apart as Hatton was unable to see punches from different angles. At the end, the judges scored it 12-2, 11-3, 11-3 for Berg who moves to the World Tourney! |

England - Lightweight - Fight-In
We have 38 Lightweights looking to enter the World Tourney, so will have 6 Fight-In bouts.
Fight-Ins: Sailor Bourne vs Bill Baxter - Bourne was too much for baxter, landing 102 out of 132 punches before scoring the KO in the 2nd round. William Faucett vs Sam Blakelock - Adequate offense and decent defense allowed Faucett to dominate Blakelock over 15 rounds of uninspiring boxing. Faucett won 11-2, 11-3, 11-3. Ted Ware vs Dave Wallace - Ware was moving well, building up points until he zigged when he should have zagged, moving right into a right hook that laid him out for the count in the 9th. He was up 4-3, 4-3, 5-2 in a good action bout. Sid Stagg vs Jim Prior - Stagg out quicked Prior throughout the fight, scoring seemingly at will in his 10-5, 10-5, 11-4 decision. Harry Kimberley vs Paddy Lee - Slow pacing and inaccurate punching by both men in this one. Kimberley wins 8-5 on all 3 cards. James Curran vs Pat Daly - Curran survived a bad cut with the help of excellent help from his corner to hold off Daly 6-6, 7-6, 9-4. |

England - Lightweight - Round 1
Round 1:
Dave Charnley vs James Curran - Curran put forth his best effort, but was outgunned as Charnley scored 4 knockdowns enroute to a 13th round KO. The judges all had it 8-4 through 12. Johnny Summers vs Harry Kimberley - Summers battered Kimberley in the first 2 rounds, causing the referee to end things towards the end of the 2nd round when Kimberley showed no signs of being able to defend himself. Stanton Abbott vs Sid Stagg - Abbott took all 6 rounds with ease, wearing the woefully outclassed Stagg down. Then in the 7th, he scored the KO win. Maurice Cullen vs Dave Wallace - Cullen used superior footwork and hand speed to outclass Wallace throughout his 11-4, 9-3, 11-3 decision. Graham Earl vs William Faucett - Earl scored the lone knockdown then kept on top of the tentative Faucett throughout to earn the 12-3, 11-4, 11-4 decision. Arthur Chambers vs Sailor Bourne - Chambers was out boxing Bourne throughout, but the fouls caught up with him as he was disqualified for blatant kidney punches in the 13th. Chambers blew an 8-3, 7-4, 7-4 edge. Colin Dunne vs Dick Burge - Dunne overcame 3 knockdowns and some serious damage from Burge to score a KO in the 10th round. Austin Gibbons vs Ray Corbett - Gibbons was knocked down in the 3rd, then came on strong, scoring a pair of knockdowns of his own in this knockdown-drag out fight. In the end it was Gibbons getting the TKO win in the 14th as the referee felt that Corbett was unfit to continue. Gibbons was ahead 7-6, 8-5, 8-5 through 13. Jack Goldswain vs Harry Mansfield - Goldswain had the edge in every skill set as he boxed the ears off of Mansfield in this one, earning the 13-2, 13-2, 13-2 decision. Bat Mullins vs Michael Ayers - Ayers cut the ring off all night to get to Mullins for a pair of knockdowns enroute to a 10-4, 9-5, 10-4 decision. Billy Schwer vs Eric Boon - Both Schwer and Boon stood toe to toe for most of this entertaining slugfest that saw Boon down 4 times, the final one for the KO in round 9. The crowd warmly cheered both victor and loser for their efforts. David Burke vs Gary Hibbert - Burke scored the lone knockdown in this stinker of a fight that went to the judges. They scored it 9-4 Burke, 6-6 and 6-6 for the majority draw. Rematch soon. Jem Carney vs Steve Murray - Murray went down 2 times, Carney's face was a bloody pulp, and the fans were screaming with glee over this slugfest! It ended up going to the judges, who scored the bout 8-7 Murray, 8-7 Carney, 8-7 Carney for the split decision win. I had it 8-7 for Murray, but it really could have gone either way! Billy Edwards vs Charles Norton - Both men gave their all in this one, but it was ended when a cut was burst open on Norton's forehead in the11th round for the TKO. Lee Meager vs Billy Thompson - Both men went down during this one, but Thompson was by far the stronger in this one, taking the 11-4, 12-3, 11-4 decision. Bobby Vanzie vs Jabez White - Vanzie survived 4 knockdowns, including 3 in the 14th round as he held off the hard charging White. The fight went to the judges who scored it 8-6, 8-6, 9-6 in favor of Vanzie who had built up a solid lead. Rematch: David Burke vs Gary Hibbert - Burke wasn't particularly impressive, but against Hibbert it didn't matter, as he had no inspiration or interest in actually fighting. The judges scored the fight 9-4, 11-4, 10-4 for Burke.

England - Lightweight - Round 2
Round 2:
Dave Charnley vs Sailor Bourne - Charnley patiently picked Bourne apart before scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 13th, then continuing on til the end of the fight. The judges scored it 14-1, 15-0, 14-1 for Charnley. Johnny Summers vs Michael Ayers - Summers started out fast, taking the first 3 rounds, then Ayers took over to take 4-8, including a knockdown in the 6th. In the 9th, a tired Ayers walked into a left hookd for the first of 3 knockdowns in the round, the final one for the count of 10! All 3 judges scored the bout 5-3 for Ayers. Stanton Abbott vs David Burke - Burke used clever movement and good hand speed to nulify the power of Abbott enroute to a 12-2, 9-4, 8-6 decision. Maurice Cullen vs Jem Carney - Carney was slow and plodding against the boxer Cullen in this one. He didn't show the capability of cutting off the ring throughout this 11-4, 12-3, 11-4 drubbing. Graham Earl vs Billy Edwards - Toe to Toe action was the order of the day as Earl scored a pair of knockdowns early, and built up a nice lead before Edwards scored a knockdown of his own in the 10th, early enough in the round that he was able to keep the pressure on. Near the end of the round the referee had seen enough to stop it as Earl was incapable of surviving the round. Earl was ahead 7-2, 6-3, 6-3 at the time. Colin Dunne vs Billy Thompson - Another rock em sock em battle that saw both men down. Unfortunately things were ended early when Dunne suffered a recurring cut on his right eyebrow that reopened 3 times before the fight was ended to hand Thompson the TKO on cuts in the 6th round. Austin Gibbons vs Bobby Vanzie - Great action bout that was center ring most of the fight as Vanzie scored a pair of knockdowns in the first 10 rounds. Vanzie faded from there as Gibbons dominated the last 1/3rd of the fight with a pair of knockdowns of his own to win the decision 11-3, 9-5, 9-5. Jack Goldswain vs Billy Schwer - Schwer scored an early knockdown but wasn't able to finish the job as Goldswain came back to score one of his own enroute to a solid 10-4, 11-3, 7-5 decision. |

England - Lightweight - Quarter Finals
Quarter Finals:
Dave Charnley vs David Burke - Charnley battered Burke throughout, scoring a pair of knockdowns to win handily 14-1, 13-2, 14-1. Johnny Summers vs Billy Edwards - Summers & Edwards put on an exciting action packed bout with Summers scoring a pair of knockdowns early then surviving an Edwards knockdown late as he tried to score the desperation KO. The judges scored the bout 11-4 on all 3 cards. Maurice Cullen vs Billy Thompson - a 3rd round clash of heads lead to a 4th round Technical Draw just as a fight was starting to break out. Rematch soon. Austin Gibbons vs Jack Goldswain - Gibbons stalked Goldswain unmercifully throughout until finally in the 15th round he got to him for a pair of knockdowns, the final one being for the count! Gibbons lead 9-3, 9-4, 9-3 through 14. Rematch: Maurice Cullen vs Billy Thompson - Cullen wasted no time going after Thompson, and in the 3rd a left hook opened a cut early on. Near the end of the round he landed a pair of jabs that tore the cut wide open to end the fight for the TKO win.

England - Lightweight - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Dave Charnley vs Austin Gibbons - Gibbons had questioned Charnley's manhood during the prefight press conference, saying that he didn't have the "nads" to stand in there and slug it out with him. Charnley gave Gibbons exactly what he asked for as both men went at it with gusto throughout! In the 6th round, Charnley landed the perfect uppercut that laid Gibbons out for the count. Afterwards Gibbons apologized and gave Charnley the respect he had due to him. Johnny Summers vs Maurice Cullen - Your basic boxer - slugger match up with both men having moments, but neither impressing (I had it a draw at 7-7). The judges scored the bout 8-5, 7-6, 8-5 for Summers. Final: Dave Charnley vs Johnny Summers - Charnley looked to be in top shape while Summers seemed a bit pudgy coming into this one. Charnley came charging out like a pitbull unleashed, landing a devastating series of blows that ended with a solid hook that dumped Summers on his back. Summers somehow got up, and Charnley went after him with even more gusto, landing another series of shots before another smothering combination put him down again, this time for the count for the KO at 2:59 in the 1st round! Charnley moves into the World Tourney with a perfect 5-0-0 (3) record. |
