Round 1:

Henry Cooper vs Woolf Bendoff - Cooper was cagey early on, boxing instead of slugging making Bendoff be the agressor and punishing him coming in. Halfway through the first round Bendoff walked into a wicked right hook that put him down for the count!

Jack Gardner vs Doyley Brown - Gardner started early, scoring a knockdown in the first 30 seconds of the fight, then poured it on until the ref stepped in to save Brown from serious harm at the 2:52 mark for the 1 TKO.

Matt Skelton vs Manny Burgo - Neither man impressed in this one as Skelton, the heavy favorite rode a 3rd round knockdown to an 8-7, 10-5, 8-7 decision.

Alex Stewart vs Brian Daltrey - Stewart simply smothered Daltrey in this one, scoring a pair of knockdowns, the 2nd one for the count at 2:51 in the 1st!

Don Cockell vs Richard Dunn - Richard Dunn survived 6 knockdowns in the first 11 rounds of warfare, but couldn't survive the 7th one in the 12th for the KO. The fans applauded the courage of Dunn who though obviously outgunned, kept coming on to make it an exciting fight!

Herbie Hide vs Roy Enifer - Hide had little trouble with Enifer, though he didn't show interest in finishing him after an early knockdown. He was content to coast to a 12-2, 11-3, 11-3 decision.

Bunny Johnson vs Julius Frances - Johnson scores 4 knockdowns as he takes the long road, earning a 11-4, 10-4, 13-2 decision.

Bruce Woodcock vs Alf Greenfield - Woodcock works hard against a game Greenfield, scoring 3 knockdowns, including 2 in the fatal 9th frame to earn a 9 round KO.

Joe Beckett vs Tommy Kiely - Beckett scored an early knockdown as he dominated Kiely, but the telling blow was a vicious cross right on Kiely's nose that caused the blood to come forth like water from a dam bursting in the 8th round for the TKO.

Tom Cowler vs Wayne Llewelyn - Cowler destroys Llewelyn, scoring 5 knockdowns, with the final one coming late in the 12th for the KO win!

John L. Gardner vs Gunner Moir - Gardner wasted little time, scoring the telling blow half way through the first round for the KO.

Audley Harrison vs Dave Ould - Harrison scored 4 knockdowns along the way to an easy 13-1, 13-2, 11-2 decision.

Jem Mace vs Pele Reid - Mace suffered a split lip in the 1st round, then proceeded to open up an early lead when the lip started bleeding so badly in the 5th round that the bout was ended. This was a huge upset win for the lightly regarded Reid!

Tom Sayers vs Denton Ruddock - Sayers was building up a solid lead when he and Ruddock clashed heads in the 6th to open up a huge gash on the forehead of Ruddock. The fight was halted, sending it to the cards for the Technical Decision, 5-0, 3-2, 4-1 for Sayers.

Danny Williams vs Sam Sexton - Williams was getting the better of it in this terrific action bout that saw Sexton down 2 times, the final one being a KO in the 7th. The crowd cheered both warriors for their efforts afterwards!

Denver Ed Smith vs William Sheriff - Sheriff showed no fear against Smith, building up an early lead on 2 of the 3 cards before walking into a wicked hook that sent him reeling into the ropes early in the 4th. Dazed, he covered up, but was unable to get off the ropes or defend himself, forcing the referee to step in to save him from further harm. 4 TKO for Smith!

Brian London vs Jewey Smith - London scored 4 knockdowns against the suprisingly game Smith to earn the 11-4 x3 decision. London gave Smith high praise afterwards for not giving in to make it an entertaining bout.

John McDermontt vs Roger Tighe - McDermontt kept the pressure on Tighe to earn an 11-4, 11-4, 8-6 decision.

Michael Sprott vs Jack Wannop - Sprott scores an early knockdown in his dominating performance against Wannop. The judges scored it 12-3, 15-0, 14-1.

Billy Walker vs Reg Andrews - Walker battered Andrews through the entire fight before a bad cut on the inside of the left brow finally broke wide open to end it in the 7th. Walker earns the TKO win.

Scott Welch vs Peter Boddington - Welch came in a heavy favorite, but went out a bloody pulp as Boddington was simply dominating. The fight ended in the 9th after a cut reopened. The bleeding was so bad that Welch didn't see the left hook that dropped him for a count of 7. The flow of claret became even worse, forcing the 9th round TKO for Boddington.

Tom Allen vs Keith Long - Both men put on a rather pedestrian effort, but Allen was slightly better, winning the split deicsion 9-6, 5-9, 9-6.

Jack Bodell vs Victor McLaglen - In what was an entertaining match, Bodell survived an early knockdown to score 3 of his own, the final one in the 13th for the KO.

Joe Goss vs Billy Aird - Aird was well ahead on 2 of 3 cards when he opened a nasty gash on the left eyelid of Goss in the 15th round. The referee took Goss to the doctor, who immediately halted the bout for the 15 TKO upset by Aird.

Jim Fell vs Adam Fogerty - Both men were battered and cut in this one, but it was the cut on Fell's right eyebrow that ended things in the 14th. The judges had it 6-5, 10-2, 7-4 for Fogerty at the time of the stop.

Eddie Neilson vs Jem Smith - Neilson scored 4 knockdowns enroute to a dominating 10-5, 14-1, 12-3 decision.

Michael Steeds vs Bombadier Billy Wells - Steeds survives a 4th round knockdown to take a 9-5, 9-5, 7-7 majority decision in what can be best described as a dull fight.

Round 2:

Lennox Lewis vs Pele Reid - Lewis pounded Reid all over the ring for 1 1/2 rounds before the referee stopped the carnage for the 2 TKO.

Henry Akinwande vs Peter Boddington - Akinwande scored 6 knockdowns in 6 rounds with the 6th one being for the count of 10 in this dominating performance!

Frank Bruno vs Billy Aird - Brono was all over Aird like white on rice as he smothered him with a pair of knockdowns in the 3rd before the ref finally ended things for the 3 TKO.

Joe Bugner vs Adam Fogerty - Bugner battered Fogerty through 10, leading 8-2 on all 3 cards before a cut reopened to end things in the 11th for a Bugner TKO.

Gary Mason vs Eddie Neilson - Mason came out and was dominating before Neilson tore a huge gash open on Mason's left eyelid to end things for a 5 TKO upset!

Henry Cooper vs Michael Steeds - Great action bout as Steeds stood in against the dangerous Cooper, with the crowd on it's feet throughout. Cooper landed a huge cross in the 6th round (ahead 3-2 on each card) for the KO!

Jack Gardner vs Tom Allen - Gardner kept the pressure on Allen, scoring an early knockdown and piling on the points until he finally scored the KO in the 11th.

Matt Skelton vs Jack Bodell - Bodell was faster to the punch in this one, building up a lead early on. In the 8th, Skelton landed a pair of nasty hooks, both for knockdowns, the 2nd one for the count of 10!

Alex Stewart vs Brian London - In what was an amazing back and forth fight, Stewart scored a knockdown in the 1st, then the 3rd only to be knocked down himself in the 5th. Stewart had a 4-3 lead when in the 8th he took over with several shots that had London in a world of hurt. The referee finally stepped in when the crowd was shouting for them to stop the fight for an 8 TKO.

Don Cockell vs John McDermontt - McDermontt scored a knockdown in the 3rd, then went on a rampage in the 5th that saw Cockell being held up only by the ringposts when his corner tossed in the towel for the 5 TKO upset!

Herbie Hide vs Michael Sprott - Hide survives an early knockdown to score a pair of his own as both men are battered and bloodied at the end. Hide proved the stronger, winning the 8-5, 8-5, 9-4 decision.

Bunny Johnson vs Billy Walker - It took Johnson less than 2 rounds to end things as the referee felt that Walker was helpless at the end of the 2nd round for the TKO.

Bruce Woodcock vs Danny Williams - Williams had built up a lead, handing a terrible beating to woodcock in an exciting 3rd round that saw the favorite on his back. Somehow Woodcock survived the round to take control in the 4th and then the 5th. Williams was totally defenseless at the end of the 5th when the referee stepped in for the 5 TKO.

Denver Ed Smith vs Tom Sayers - A lot of close rounds in this one, with Smith fighting a rather dirty bout. The referee had seen enough when in the 15th he gave the DQ win to Sayers due to intentional rabbit punching. Sayers lead 8-5, 8-5, 6-8 through 14.

John L. Gardner vs Audley Harrison - Astounding action in this one saw both men have their moments, with several rounds being "round of the year" material. In the end, it went to the judges who scored it 7-6, 9-4, 8-5 for Gardner.

Tom Cowler vs Joe Beckett - Cowler went down for 6 in the 1st round and somehow survived the Beckett onslaught of the first 2 rounds. In the 3rd, the tide changed as both men stood toe to toe in a thrilling round. After that it was all Cowler right up to the 5th round when he scored the KO win!

Round 3:

Lennox Lewis vs Eddie Neilson - Lewis has little trouble with Neilson, scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 7th, the final one the KO shot!

Henry Akinwande vs John McDermontt - Akinwande seemed to take it easy most of the fight against McDermontt, and it nearly cost him as he narrowly won 7-7, 7-6, 10-4.

Frank Bruno vs Tom Cowler - Bruno wasted no time, landing a jab, 3 combinations, a hook followed by a devistating uppercut to score a 33 second KO!

Joe Bugner vs John L. Gardner - Gardner survived an early knockdown to make a fight of it, but a nasty gash on his forehead ended the festivities late in the 12th to hand Bugner the TKO.

Henry Cooper vs Tom Sayers - Cooper inflicted a pair of nasty cuts over each eye of Sayers in this dominating performance. The ref finally ended things in the 9th for the TKO.

Jack Gardner vs Herbie Hide - Gardner had built up a solid lead behind 3 knockdowns before breaking his right hand on Hide's forehead in the 12th. Gardner was unable to continue, handing Hide the improbable 12 TKO!

Matt Skelton vs Bunny Johnson - Johnson went down early, but fired back with 4 knockdowns of his own enroute to a suprisingly dominating performance against the favored Skelton. The judges scored the bout 12-3 on all cards.

Alex Stewart vs Bruce Woodcock - Stewart needs less than a round to dismantle Woodcock, landing a beautiful hook near the end of the round.

Quarter Finals:

Lennox Lewis vs Herbie Hide - Lewis scored a quick knockdown in the 1st, then spent the rest of the round battering a hapless Hide until the referee stepped in to protect him from further damage.

Henry Akinwande vs Bunny Johnson - Another lackluster performance by Akinwande allows Johnson to remain in the tourney due to a draw 8-6, 7-7, 6-8. Rematch coming up.

Frank Bruno vs Henry Cooper - Cooper scored the lone knockdown, bloodied Bruno, yet was battered so badly in the 8th that the referee stepped in as he started to go down. TKO for Bruno who survives a brawl!

Joe Bugner vs Alex Stewart - Bugner had a slight lead 5-4 despite an early knockdown by Stewart when he opened a nasty gash on the right eyelid of Stewart. The doctor stopped the bout despite the objections of his corner, handing Bugner the 10 TKO.

Rematch:

Henry Akinwande vs Bunny Johnson - This time around, it was a barn burner as both men turned the heat up several knotches. Akinwande proved to be the stronger, winning the narrow decision, 8-7 on all 3 cards to move into the Semi-Finals.

Semi Finals:

Lennox Lewis vs Henry Akinwande - Lewis boxed the perfect fight against Akinwande, keeping him off balance with slick movement and a hard jab, along with flurries from all angles. He finally wore his man down, scoring knockdowns in the 11th then again for the 10 count in the 12th. Compubox numbers show the disparity, with Lewis scoring 390 punches to only 89 for Akinwande!

Frank Bruno vs Joe Bugner - This was a brawl in every sense of the word, with Bruno going down in the 3rd, then taking so much damage that the crowd was calling for the fight to end in the 4th! The referee didn't stop the bout however, and Bruno answered with a pair of knockdowns of his own as both men punished one another! I had Bruno winning 9-4, but the judges scored it 12-1, 12-2, 11-4 in what has been one of the most entertaining bouts of the year!

Final:

Lennox Lewis vs Frank Bruno - Bruno was game, taking a handfull of rounds, but Lewis scored 4 knockdowns to build up a huge lead. Bruno scored a late flash knockdown, but Lewis wasn't hurt, and held off the desperation attempts at a KO for the decision win by the score of 10-5, 10-5, 9-6. Lewis will fight for Queen and Country in the World Tourney, and is expected to have a solid shot at winning it all!

Paul Bonson vs Tony Booth - Booth worked hard to build up a commanding lead, only to see it vanish when Bonson reopened a gash over his left eye to end things early in the 15th round. Booth was leading 9-5, 8-6, 9-5 at the time.

Phil Gregory vs Michael Pinnock - Gregory suffered a bad cut on his forehead in the 1st round, then had it split open in the 2nd, forcing an early end to things. Pinnock earns a spot in the round of 16.

I had great fun with them last night. The 4 fighters I honestly expected to make the Final 4 did. And I didn't see anyone giving Lewis any challenge throughout. He should go far in the World Tourney methinks. Looking at the other weight classes, I think the English team will be quite competitive.

Round 1:

Johnny Nelson vs Paul Bonson - Nelson smothered Bonson, scoring 2 knockdowns in the 2nd, then hurting him badly in the 3rd before the ref ended the fight for the TKO.

David Haye vs Michael Pinnock - Haye pitched a shutout through the first 10 rounds, scoring a pair of knockdowns before completely closing Pinnock's left eye in the 11th for the TKO. The crowd gave Pinnock a rousing ovation for his efforts when the decision was announced!

Ola Afolabi vs Denzil Browne - Afolabi dominated Brown for the first 12 rounds before the swelling of Browne's right orb became so pronounced that the fight was stopped in the 13th. Afolabi was ahead 9-2, 9-2, 10-1 through 12.

Carl Thompson vs John Keeton - Thompson mauled Keeton for the first 7 rounds before scoring the KO in the 8th. Thompson had recieved 5 warnings for various infractions, but didn't let that change his tactics.

Terry Dunstan vs Garry Delaney - Dunstan hurt Delaney in the 1st, then put him away with 1:16 left in the 2nd with a short clean uppercut that landed flush on the hapless Delaney's chin for the 10 count.

Bruce Scott vs Robert Norton - Scott was much stronger than the game Norton, who didn't let that stop him from giving his all. The crowd spent a large part of the fight on their feet as Scott scored 3 knockdowns, the final one for the KO in the 13th. Scott was ahead 8-3, 8-3, 7-4 at the time of the stop. Both warriors recieved standing ovations!

Sammy Reeson vs Derek Angol - Angol gave as good as he got in the first 3 rounds, even dominating the 3rd! In the 4th however, he walked into a Reeson left hook that laid him out like a corpse in a morgue! A 10 count later, Reeson had his hand raised in victory!

Mark Hobson vs Glenn McCrory - Hobson built up a lead with excellent ring movement and occasional offense then withstood a knockdown in the 15th round that nearly cost him everything! In the end the judges scored it 9-6, 10-5, 9-5 for Hobson.

Quarter Finals:

Johnny Nelson vs Mark Hobson - Nelson scored 3 knockdowns and used pinpoint accuracy to close Hobson's right eye for the TKO in the 10th round.

David Haye vs Sammy Reeson - Haye boxed beautifully throughout before scoring the KO in the 15th. Strange scoring by the judges through 14 however as they had it 10-4, 7-7, 11-3.

Ola Afolabi vs Terry Dunstan - Dunstan gave as good as he got, but 3 Afolabi knockdowns, including 2 in the deciding round cost him as he was KO'd in the 11th. The judges had it 5-5, 4-5, 7-3 through 10.

Carl Thompson vs Bruce Scott - Scott gave a great effort, but couldn't withstand the power of Thompson. He was down early in the 6th for a 9 count that he never recovered from as the referee ended the fight near the end of the round for the 6 TKO.

Semi-Finals:

Johnny Nelson vs Ola Afolabi - Nelson was content to fight defensively throughout to nullify Afolabi's power. The tactic worked to perfection as he landed 53.6% of his punches while holding Afolabi to only 19.1%. The judges scored it 11-4, 9-6, 11-4 for Nelson.

David Haye vs Carl Thompson - Thompson couldn't handle the power of Haye, as he went down 3 times. Haye had a bad cut that nearly stopped the bout, but the doctor allowed it to continue, and Haye's corner did a great job of closing it. In the 8th round Hay scored the 2nd and 3rd knockdowns, the final one being for the count of 10!

Final:

Johnny Nelson vs David Haye - Nelson played matador to Haye's bull, catching him coming in hard in the first round for a knockdown. Haye picked himself up, and the fight went back and forth with several close action packed rounds. Haye scored a knockdown in the 15th round, (I thought to seal his win 7-5) but the judges scored it 7-6 Hayes, 6-6 even, 6-5 for Nelson for the draw!

Rematch:

Johnny Nelson vs David Haye - This one started out much like the first one, though Haye worked the body much better in the early rounds to soften Nelson up. He scored a knockdown late in the 4th round, then went in for the kill in the 5th, scoring a pair of knockdowns! The referee allowed them to continue, but Haye landed a viscious series of punches that had Nelson out on his feet when the ref ended it at 2:24 in the 5th for the slight upset TKO! Haye earns his way into the World Tourney!

Round 1:

Len Harvey vs Stan Cullis - Harvey boxed the picture perfect match, with slick movement and amazing accuracy against the hapless Cullis. The judges scored the bout 13-2, 13-2, 11-4 for Harvey.

John Conteh vs Herbert Hall - Conteh suffered a cut early in the first round then had it reopen throughout the rest of the match. He didn't let it stop him from stalking and dominating Hall however, and he finally scored the KO in the 6th round.

Dennis Andries vs Jack Scales - Andries scored a pair of knockdowns in his destruction of Scales, finally forcing the referee to save Scales from serious harm in the 14th for the TKO.

Freddie Mills vs Doug Myers - Myers was willing, and landed some good shots, but Mills simply shook them off as he continued to rain punishment throughout. In the 5th, Mills landed a series of shots that had Myers out on his feet, only being held up by the ropes when the referee ended it. 5 TKO for Mills!

Dean Francis vs Neil Simpson - This one had the crowd on their feet throughout, even though Francis took most of the rounds. Finally in the 10th round Francis scored his second knockdown. Simpson gamely got up, but was hurt so badly the referee wisely stepped in to end it!

Noel McCormick vs Albert Finch - Finch worked hard to hurt McCormick as he waded in, and was successful for the first 3 rounds. McCormick landed a series of hooks that sent Finch reeling across the ring until the referee had seen enough to end it 4 TKO for McCormick!

Chris Finnegan vs Tony Oakey - Finnegan was winning handily, but continued bleeding from an ever widening gash on his forehead ended the fight for the upset TKO in the 11th! Finnegan was up 6-3, 8-1, 8-1 when the fight was halted.

Clinton Woods vs Alex Buxton - Woods moved well throughout, popping his jab in Buxton's face until he wore down, then he landed a wicked combo that floored Buxton for the 10 count in the 12th round.

Quarter-Finals:

Len Harvey vs Tony Oakey - Harvey used every inch of the ring, along with punches in bunches to flummox Oakey throughout. He scored the lone knockdown in the 12th enroute to a 9-3, 14-1, 14-1 decision.

John Conteh vs Dean Francis - Conteh chose to be the boxer rather than the slugger as he dominated Francis 9-3, 9-3, 8-4 despite losing 2 points due to an over zealous referee.

Dennis Andries vs Noel McCormick - McCormick showed more power than the slugger Andries in this one, scoring 2 knockdowns. Unfortunately he couldn't sustain the assault for 15 rounds and allowed Andries to earn his way back to a 7-7, 7-7, 8-7 (Andries) majority decision. Rematch after the next bout.

Freddie Mills vs Clinton Woods - Mills hurt Woods badly throughout the first round, but wasn't able to seal the deal. The 2 warriors went back and forth throughout in an exciting bout that was finally ended when Woods scored a pair of knockdowns in the 10th round. The 2nd of those resulted in a 10 count as Mills made it up at 8 but then fell back down!

Rematch:

Dennis Andries vs Noel McCormick - Andries didn't allow McCormick the chance for a draw, or a win in this one, scoring a knockdown early, then piling up the points until he landed a perfect hook to start the 12th round. McCormick was out for over 10 minutes, and had to be taken to the hospital where he was kept overnight for observation for a concussion.

Semi-Finals:

Len Harvey vs Clinton Woods - Another dominating performance by the slick boxing Harvey, as he knocked Woods down 3 times enroute to a 13-2, 10-5, 12-3 decision.

John Conteh vs Dennis Andries - Andries was boxing the perfect fight against Conteh despite being knocked down once and being cut on the inside of the left eyebrow early. His corner did a great job of closing the cut. Andries then scored a pair of knockdowns along the way to build up a nice lead through the first 14 rounds. In the 15th however, Conteh reopened the cut in such a way that the fight was stopped with only 2 minutes left in the fight for the TKO! Andries was ahead 7-6, 8-5, 9-4 through 14, and had landed 50.1% of his punches compared to only 19.0% for the winner Conteh.

Final:

Len Harvey vs John Conteh - This was a difficult fight to score as most of the rounds were very close. Both men worked from the outside, and neither seriously hurt the other throughout. That being said, I felt Conteh took the final 4 rounds to win the fight 9-6. as did most of the ringside observers. The judges scored it 8-6 Conteh, 9-4 Harvey and 8-6 Harvey for the split decision. The crowd was throwing debris at the judges after the decision was announced! Harvey moves forward to the World Tourney.

Robin Reid vs Michael Alexander - Reid was cut early on, but dominated, scoring 3 knockdowns in the first 6 rounds. Reid continued pounding on Alexander with the referee looking closely, nearly stepping in when Alexander let go a sweet flurry of punches that burst open the earlier cut. When the referee took him over for the doctor, it was immediately halted handing Alexander the huge upset win! Reid was up 5-1 on all 3 cards at the time of the stoppage.

Cornelius Carr vs Howard Clarke - Carr was unimpressive in his one sided win over Clarke, landing only 26% of his shots. The judges scored the fight 11-4, 14-1, 12-3 for Carr.

David Starie vs Mark Baker - Starie was having his way with Baker, scoring a knockdown in the 3rd while building up a solid lead. On the first punch in the 7th round however, Starie broke his left hand on a hard smash to the head of Baker. The pain was so much he couldn't continue, handing Baker the improbable TKO win!

Richie Woodhall vs Fidel Castro Smith - Smith used dirty tactics to keep close to Woodhall in this one, with the judges having it 6-6, 8-4, 7-4 for Woodhall when in the 13th round yet another low blow caused a DQ win for Woodhall. It was the 6th foul of the night for Smith.

Matthew Barney vs Glenn Catley - This fight was back and forth through the first 10 rounds with both men putting up a nice display of pugilism. Barney faded however, allowing Catley to take over in the final few rounds to win the decision 9-5, 10-4, 10-4.

Quarter-Finals:

Chris Eubank vs Mark Baker - Eubank boxed fluidly throughout, opening a cut on the inside of the right brow of Baker, then peppering it with his jab, widening it throughout. The drubbing was finally ended when the cut reopened for the 2nd time and the ring doctor ordered the fight halted in the 11th for the TKO.

Carl Froch vs Glenn Catley - Froch got off to a show start, splitting the first 2 rounds before scoring an early knockdown in the 3rd, then keeping the pressure on until the referee had no choice but to end things for the safety of Catley.

Cornelius Carr vs Richie Woodhall - These 2 exchanged knockdowns and fought what very well may be the English Round of the Year in the 10th. Woodhall nearly had Carr out in the 10th, when suddenly Carr unleashed a beautiful hook from nowhere to score his only knockdown and take the round (17-20 by TBCB scoring) As the fight continued, Woodhall pulled ahead to take the decision 8-6 on all 3 cards.
