Between the Mets and the Pirates I'd go with the Pirates. You wouldn't have the annoying New York overpaid players and if and when the Pirates finally do something it'd feel more rewarding.

The Pirates are just made for the new long-term fan.

The White Sox have a long, both proud and tragic tradition. That 2005 World Series title, our first in almost a century, was a thing of epic beauty and finally exorcised the demons of the Black Sox scandal. Ozzie Guillen is the most entertaining manager in all of baseball and with Kenny Williams as GM, you can count on them being active movers.
It's also a group of guys that have distinct images and/or personalities. A.J., Bobby Jenks, Alexei Ramirez, just to name a few off the top of my head. They'll generally be competitive, but you never quite know for sure just how good they're going to be and that makes each season an exciting adventure. Plus, I find that White Sox fans are more passionate about baseball than Cubs fans, even if many of us do feel anger at being the second team in Chi-town despite having as rich a history as the Cubs and the most recent World Series title. That said, if you insist on the NL and have it down to the Mets and Pirates, I don't see that you can go wrong with either team. The Mets have a situation somewhat analogous to the White Sox, albeit without the lengthy history that the Pale Hose do, while the Pirates are a once-proud franchise stuck in a quagmire of small marketdom. Phillies are a fun team to watch these days, just to toss in another NL team, albeit something of a frontrunner, having won last year's WS title and looking like a possible repeat this year. Whatever you do, don't become a Yankees or Red Sox fan. The NYY/BOS rivalry is overplayed and annoying and a substantial portion of their fanbases seem to think that if it's not about Yankees/Red Sox, it's not relevant to baseball. And don't get me started on the Red Sox bandwagoners.

Ah yes, I had the foresight in April 2001 to jump on the Red Sox bandwagon...
I still remember Boone's homerun in 2003

Well it turned out to be the Pittsburgh Pirates, I took on board what had been said on the thread and ended up with a list of four which were Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates, St Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies. Then I thought let OOTP make my final choice and played a full season with each team represented by their all time players, in the end Pittsburgh finished 76-68 followed by Minnesota 72-72, St Louis 70-74 and Philadelphia 70-74.
Thanks for eveybodys input.
