How do you correct league name?

I have created 4 leagues. Two have the wrong name listed on the league standings screen (upper right corner...just below the Display dropdown...just to the left of the league date) and all other screens where the league name is given.

When I open up the league, it is correct and shows "AA.lg".

But when I select it and it goes to the league standings screen, it says it's the "AAA" League.

When I open up the "AAA" league, it shows "AA".

Somehow in setting these up I apparently put in the wrong info.

Everything is correct in the OOTP5 folder in my programs files.
If I select "AA.lg", that's the one I get.

Is this possible to correct?

I don't think that it can be changed in the game.

I don't either. I forgot to change the name of my solo league when I created it, so now I'm stuck with "New League"

Thanks for the help.

I guess I'll just have to live with it.

You can correct this, by changing the league name at the beginning of the league.dat file. The trick is you need to do this with a Hex Editor (not a Text Editor). When you enter the new name, be sure not to insert any new bytes in the file - just type over the existing bytes. If you want to make your league name a little longer, type over the 00's that trail your current name.

Make a backup copy of your league files before trying this.

Here's where you can find one of those editors...

OK, like an idiot, I tried to change the league name in Wordpad, just to see what would happen. After editing the league.dat file, I opened OOTP, got an "invalid player file" message, and a blank OOTP screen with "sign coaches and scouts" at the top. I deleted league.dat, and moved the copy I made from my desktop back into the league folder. I'm still getting the "invalid player file" message, plus I don't even get the blank screen, OOTP just closes.

Please tell me there is a way to fix this and I didn't just trash the league I've been playing for 2 months.

Just checked the players.dat. It says it was modified at the time I modified the league.dat file, though I never touched it. Of course, I didn't back up that file.

wtf?

The players.dat file is now BLANK. 0 bytes.

I have a backup of the entire .lg from awhile ago. If I copy the players file from that league, will I be back in business? At this point, I'm afraid to even try that until I get some more info.

I'm guessing stats, rating changes, etc. are in the players.dat file. Which means, basically, I'm screwed.

Why would editing the league.dat file delete the entire players.dat file? This is maddening...

Sooo, anyone know of a good freeware data-retrieval program?

If you continued into OOTP after you got the load error, and you let it save all your league files, which it likes to do frequently, it trashed the file.

Wordpad is not a hex editor. When you used this, you converted all the bytes to printable ASCII charcters, which essentially ruins the file.

Ah. That would explain it. I just wonder why I got the invalid player file message the first time I opened the league.

I know Wordpad is not a hex editor. I didn't know it would corrupt the file. You live, you learn.

"Invalid Player File" seems to be the message you get from OOTP if any of the .dat files are unreadable. The program didn't like your new league.dat file, but just wasn't very specific in its error reporting.
