Or they figured getting folks introduced to the game with the new UI (which was the main stumbling block back in the day, and for some folks might still be) for no risk was worth potential increase in sales.

As for a lot, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that sales have gone up in the version between 6.5 and X. No argument that 6.5 was the pinnacile of it's series, but like the Windows 9x version it's day has come and gone.

Also anyone noticed that a thread about free software has turned into another "6.5 waz teh awesome! New thingz suck00rs!" thread? Guess free doesnt' make things better for some.

Since 6.5 was the spot I stopped, this looks like a good idea. I will give this a whirl.

Which one is better wasn't really a factor in the decision. Part of the goal here is to familiarize people with a version of the game that is pretty close to OOTP 10 in nature, and therefore encourage people to buy the newer versions and not experience culture shock when they do so. We wouldn't be able to do that with OOTP 6.5.

On top of that, OOTP 6.5 frankly LOOKS old, doesn't run on Mac, and wasn't nearly as "feted" as OOTP 8 was.

I intend to use this free OOTP 8 as bait for some of my friends whom I think should be OOTP'ers. Misguided fools, they have ignored my entreaties long enough. Now I will hook them good. This is how they will look when I am done with them:

Might have been asked but is this 8 or 8.5? If it's 8, any reasons why y'all didn't offer 8.5? Just curious.

Uh, because there's no such thing as 8.5?

For some reason I thought 8 was under SI still and 8.5 was the first one out and added milestone tracker. That was 7 and 8 then?

2007 = SI
8 = OOTP Developments

Both were the same year of the game.

First thing Id' do is create a ticket in the tech support forum with some more details (OS, what's happening when it crashes, errors if any, etc...)

FWIW I skipped a couple of versions, having versions 2, 3, 4, 5, 2006, 2007, and X, missing out on 6.5 and 9. I hear alot of good things about both of the versions Ive skipped, but since I dont have either one, I have gone back to 2007 while waiting for some things to get ironed out in X, and I am loving it. 2007 / 8 is a great version

I liked the final patch of 8 quite a bit. Here's to hoping it has the desired effect. Nice brave move, guys!
I doubt my post had anything to do with it, but thanks for remembering it .

I had a hard time weaning myself off of 6.5 for the longest time. But then I joined a league (or two) that were using OOTP 9 and that finally forced me to use and get comfortable with the new interface, etc. Now I could never go back. I still have 6 & 6.5 installed, but I haven't played them since last fall. They're more like museum pieces now.

Playing around with this and it's frustrating

I created a 1901 MLB league with the Eastern League and Western Association as non affiliated 'A' ball leagues. Tried to do it with no players but that crashes the system, so I created fictional players

I have to go in and change all the players who are not caucasian, change the coaches and managers of all 3 leagues...make sure no managers get fired and if they do rehire them...

Plus, their is no easy career leaderboard like in 6.5. It is replaced with Cato, and I have a bunch of 1890 records :-(

Plus no single game records.

The added work involved almost makes it 'work' and not enjoyable...shame

I do like the fact I no longer have to grab the Lahman and fix the players though

As part of our ongoing efforts to spread the word about OOTP, we are pleased to announce that we are now offering OOTP 8 for FREE for Windows and Mac.

You can download the free version of OOTP 8 here!

This is a fully functional version of OOTP 8. There are no restrictions or limitations. (The game ships with 2007 rosters...)

Of course, if you're on this forum, chances are you already own OOTP 8. This is really more of an approach to attracting new users to the game, but I wanted to be sure to announce this on the forums as well.

Over the next few weeks we will be conducting some additional marketing activities around this free release, so you'll likely see us active on Facebook, Twitter, a newsletter, and so forth.

Help us spread the word!

(Oh, and before everyone jumps on us, getting this out the door required very little of Markus' time. He's been working on some difficult bugs for patch #4! )

Note: OOTP 8 is offered "as-is." We no longer offer active technical support for OOTP 8, nor will we be releasing any future patches.

Thanks!

Steve
Is this still the case? I left the download running all night with no results. Did I do something wrong. On my system I have OOTP5 and and older version of the Lahman database.

It should still be the same case. Might be some problem on your end? I just downloaded it from that link with no problem...?

Let us know if you're still having trouble...
