SF Giants: 2009 Champions! Then what?
I have started a couple dynasties before and never followed through. I have a variety of mediocre excuses, but mainly I'm constantly restarting leagues to accommodate for tweaks or slight changes I want to make. I just finished my first full season and, if you can believe it, the Giants won the World Series. I intend to stick with this league as I made it through a full season, and will catalog the events here. I'm not sure what the voice will be and it will probably evolve as the thread goes on. At this point I picture it primarily as the logic that is going on in the GM's head, or the front office. I also expect to take my time going through the off-season. I don't play as much as I would like, and posting will slow things down as well. But who knows, this will be my first off-season.
A few things. Trade difficulty is on hard. Scouting is very high, and coaches are on. There are three feeder leagues: college, high school, and an international league where the prospects are drafted at 16-17. I did three moves that could be considered questionable (your game, play it your way, I know, just in the interest of full disclosure). I made Sandoval a better 3B. I feel he was severely underrated defensively so I improved his defense. I think I overshot it, but I only used commissioner mode on the first day, and don't intend to go back. I made Magglio Ordonez (traded for him) have a team option for his 2010 contract. I have since realized this option vests if he gets a certain # of AB's. If he reached that, he battled some injuries, I will absolutely pick up the option. I also made Renteria's third year an option, as that is correct. I make waiver claims on all players I want. I think some people feel this gives the user an unfair advantage. It has benefited me a couple times, but at this point, I intend to continue to claim players I want. This may change. To me, this thread will be even more fun if readers (if there are any) ask questions about the team, or the history for me to answer. I don't intend to talk about the 2009 season much, other than evaluating stats and how that relates to the players in 2010. But am happy to address any questions anybody may have like how did I get this player or how did I get rid of that player etc. Again...World Series Champions!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it. |

World Champions

What an improbable run. No one expected this from our Giants. Let's enjoy our 3-1 victory to sweep the Rangers tonight, but tomorrow it's back to work as we need to evaluate our team, and how it will look in 2010. There are many decisions to make regarding Free Agency, and we need a game plan. I think it is best if we look at each position individually, how it will look in 2010, and what we have in the pipeline for the future at that position. We should also discuss the fate of our free agents for each position as we go through this rundown. Tonight...enjoy. |

Catcher
10/27/2009
First we will take a look at the catcher position 2009: Bengie Molina started out as our starting catcher before being traded to the Indians on the trade deadline, July 31st. He put up decent numbers going .285/.323/.531 as a Giant. However when Briann McCann came over he became expendable. He is a type A FA so the Indians may get the benefit from that. McCann put up comparable numbers as a Giant .283/.366/.421. Note the lower SLG, but higher OBP. He performed great in the postseason putting up an OPS of .958. 2010: McCann is the clear starter going into 2010. Should be a middle of the order bat, though it would be nice to see SLG increase a bit. The backup will require some decisions. Steve Holm did not perform very well, and at AAA Lou Marson and Adam Witter are ready to make the jump. An early hunch brings up Witter, who at 26 doesn't have much more room to grow, and let Marson continue to develop and get everyday AB's in AAA. Both of these players could make good trade bait as well, since McCann should be our catcher for a while. Victor Marin, our second round draft pick, has the best potential. It's hard not to wonder if the scout missed on this one however. He struggled in the Arizona rookie league, and will return there next year. He will be 20 by the time the season starts, and that is a bit of a concern. Posey is also a highly touted prospect, but struggled early. He finished the season strong in Augusta (Low A) and will hopefully start in AA for 2010. |

Next we will look at 1B 2009: Travis Ishikawa really blossomed into a very good player this year. He hit .293/.352/.454, and was tremendoun with 2-outs and runners in scoring position. He played a fantastic first base and should be a candidate for a gold glove. He doesn't have a high ceiling however, and is a position where there could be offensive improvement. 2010: Ishikawa should have the job to start 2010. There is no one that is in position to give him a run for his money. Jesus Guzman struggled in AAA and Logan Morrison will almost certainly start the season in AAA and is not ready for the show. Barring a strong spring training from Guzman, the backup is probably not currently on the roster. Allen Craig is someone to watch as an outside chance of starting as the backup. Angel Villalona looks like the future at first base. He destroyed the pitching in Augusta to the tune of .341/.411/.562 and will start in AA 2010. Last edited by Sparrow; 09-02-2009 at 10:19 PM. |

Now second base 2009: Kevin Frandsen, Eugenio Velez, and Juan Uribe got most of the time at second. Frandsen and Velez played very well, Velez in the outfield a fair bit, and Uribe struggled a bit this year. 2010: Frandsen and Velez should compete for the starting job. If Frandsen wins it, Velez may also compete for playing time at LF. Both should make the club with one being the starter, and the other the backup (if not the starting LF'er). To restate, the backup will probably be whoever loses the starting job. Nick Noonan is projected to have all the potential in the world. However he performed poorly in A ball and was demoted to SS Salem-Keizer where he was truly mediocre. He is only/already 20, and may have to start in Salem-Keizer in 2010. It would be nice to seem him climb the ladder a bit this year. Otherwise, the prospects within the organization are not great. |

3B 2009: Fat Ichiro! Kung-Fu Panda! Pablo Sandoval is the man. Pablo Sandoval was fantastic. 2010: Pablo will hold this job. The backup will be Frandsen if he is the backup IF'er, otherwise it might be a FA, or Ryan Rohlinger. Pablo should be the starter for a long time, but Dayan Viciedo idestroyed AAA and Mike Moustakas moved quickly and will start in AA in 2010. These players may need to find new positions or may wind up as trade bait. Viciedo is an expensive player to have in the minor leagues. |

Ss

SS 2009: Emmanuel Burris was very good. He led off the entire season, stealing 46 bases. His OBP (.331) could use a boost. He played a solif if not spectacular SS. 2010: Burris should be the starter again. He did nothing to lose the job and there is no one close. Again the backup will either be Frandsen or not a part of the organization. Brandon Crawford is the top prospect having a great year n A ball. Our scouts do not project this success to translate into the big leagues, but here's to hoping. |

Lf

2009: Magglio Ordonez was the regular LF'er. He missed a fair amount of time to injuries so Velez and Randy Winn played there as well. Ordonez was solid but not great, Velez we already discussed for 2B. Winn had a surprisingly good season and will be discussed a bit more under CF. 2010: Ordonez did not get enough games or AB's to automatically trigger the $15M team option. He is 35 and I do not anticipate exercising the option. I'm not sure what this means for compensation (great GM huh?) but either way the option will be declined. Velez has a shot at LF, as does Brian Horwitz who did a nice job in limited AB's. The Giants will take a very serious look at Matt Holliday and may try very hard to sign him. Velez, Horwitz, John Bowker, and Andres Torres are all options for the backup option. No real LF prospects in the pipeline, but Viciedo may get some time in LF this year. |

Cf

2009: Winn and Torres shared CF duties throughout most of the year. Torres was very bad, and Winn was surprisingly good. However, on August 14th, injuries force the call up of the 6th overall pick from the 2009 draft, Dustin Ackley. Wow, he took the job and held it. He started in AA where he played well enough to get a promotion. He then dominated AAA before hitting .318 with an OPS of .866 (1.205 over 31 games in AAA). 2010: This is Ackley's job. Winn is a backup without compensation (surprising considering his numbers, and unless he excepts a 1-year, relatively team friendly deal, I don't envision him returning. Torres may continue to be a backup. Austin Jackson has an outside chance but he struggled once coming over to the Giants. Kazuyoshi Watanabe is a 17 year old with a world of potential. He did not play in 2009, and we claimed him off waivers in October from the A's. He does have a major league contract, and this is somewhat problematic as he is only 17. |

RF 2009: Vladamir Guerrero played a great RF 2010: Guerrero wants big money. We will offer him arbitration (Type A) and will be perfectly happy if he accepts. Wew ill not, however, be signing him to a 5 year deal, even though he just helped bring the first world series trophy to San Francisco. If not Guerrero than Bowker? A FA like Ankiel? This is an uncomfortable position. We have already discussed backup OF'ers. The future is Jayson Heyward who tore up A and AA. It is unclear whether he should start at AA or make the jump to AAA. It is not unreasonable to think he will get the call in 2010 but 2011 look more likely. |

Nice in depth analysis, Sparrow. The Giants look pretty primed; it will be interesting to see who they pick up to help the offense...looking forward see how this one plays out.

The Rotation
10/27/2009
SP 2009: Lincecum, CAin, and Sanchez were lights out. Johnson pitched very well. Pedro Martinez and Jon Lieber (no longer with the team were okay), and Steve Hammon did a nice job between Pedro and the return of Sheets. Sheets was also only okay. 2010: Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez are locks. Johnson and Sheets are both FA and asking for more money than we are looking to pay. Both are Type A FA, and may be worth more for the draft picks. Hammond earned a look, and Rich Harden is an interesting FA. No one else is that close, and we may look to sign some FA's if possible on the cheap and let them battle for the 4th and 5th spot with Hammond. Bumgarner and Alderson are both promising prospects, though both of their stocks dropped a bit this year. |

Thanks. I'm nervous the drop off in the OF (I mean how much can you count on Ackley as a rookie) and losing Sheets and Johnson in the rotation will really hurt the team. But I guess after the world series where can you go but down. Plus, this team was not meant to win this year, and I think it is moving in the right direction to be competitive year in and year out in the near future.

Closer
10/27/2009
Closer 2009: Brian Wilson save 40 games with an ERA of 2.17 and a WHIP of 1.06. Opponents hit .192 off him with a BABIP of .235. Really good? Really lucky? Really dominant! 2010: Brian Wilson is the closer. Eduardo Morlan had a nice season in AA and has the most potential of any future closer. |

Rp

RP 2009: Too many guys to cover all of the comings an goings. Bob Howry and Rafael Soriano (came over in the McCann trade) ended as the setup guys and had an ERA under 2. Sergio Romo pitched very well, and so did Billy Sadler though he came up late and only tallied 15 IP. Merkin Valdez struggled and only remained on the roster because he was out of options, and we believe in his potential. 2010: Romo, and Affeldt are locks for the bullpen. Valdez needs to be at least decent in Spring Training to remain with the team. We will try to bring back Soriano (3 year deal?) and Howry (1 year deal?) and hopefully they will be willing. That leaves one more spot to fill and no reason to think Sadler won't stick. There are some nice relievers in AA but none really at AAA. If Sadler doesn't stick we will be looking at FA or converting a AAA starter. Talking about relief prospects is not that interesting. For the most part, even with loads of potential, they are more interesting f they develop into a closer or starter so I'll avoid mentioning names here. That is our end of 2009 preview of 2010. Should be a busy off-season, where the OF and SP need some help. Really everywhere other than C, 3B and CF on offense could receive an upgrade. We just may have the pieces and payroll flexibility to upgrade through trades, however only if it's a good fit for the future. Again, I don't know exactly how the off-season works, so not sure what 10/28/2009 will bring, but I expect not as much as today. |

How did you get so many great prospects without dismantling your team at all? I thought you said trading was on hard haha.

I'm at work so don't have access to the game, but again, I'd be happy to pull up the trade history on any player(s) anyone was wondering about. I think it would be fun to have some Q and A throughout this thread if there is the interest. |

There's a bunch of them: Heyward, Logan Morrison, Mike Moustakas, Dayan Viciedo, Austin Jackson, and Lou Marson are the ones that stick out to me. Also, how did you manage to get both McCann and Soriano?

From memory (again shaky): Jackson (stupid AI move) and Viciedo (stupid, plus has a $10M contract) were waiver claims. Marson for Pedro Martinez, who I signed as a free agent. McCann and Soriano revolved around Schierholtz and was in part a salary dump by the Braves. Soriano had been on the trade block for months. Anyway, I could be partly to fully wrong on these, I'll give you the facts, hopefully tonight. |

Logan Morrison came over along with P. Andrelcyzk, and J. Buente on 4-29-09 for E. Martinez-Esteve, G. Broshuis, B. Snyder, O. Odle, C. Corgan, D. Colliner, B. Medders, S. Klink, and C. Valentin. Mike Moustakas was traded on 4-4-09 for C. Gillaspie, A. Hornostaj, S. Santos, T. Kline, D. Runzler (what a year he is having in real life), P. Oseguera, A. Reichard, R. Shaver, J. Shriner, and R. Alvarez. Dayan Viciedo claimed on waivers on 8-4-09 Austin Jackson claimed on waivers on 7-2-09 Lou Marson for P. Martinez, B. Anderson, J. Lopez, J. Navarro, R. Lopez, and $185,185 McCann, Soriano and $1,000,000 on 7-22-09 for N. Schierholtz, C. Whitaker, J. Miller, E. Whiteside, T. Perez, B. Pill, E. Zambrano, R. Lormand, and B. Fahey. So, as you can see I really used pitching minor league depth to my advantage. Something I don't plan on doing going forward. I will however, continue to claim players on waivers freely. If you, or any other readers have other questions about how I got to where I am feel free to ask. It was fun looking back over all these deals. |
