I have only ever joined one online league and it never got off the ground. So I am strictly a solo player. That being said, if there was ever a way to play online AND head-to-head (ducks shos being thrown my way), SIGN ME UP!

Single game records would really be a nice addition IMO.Thats the one thing I really wish was in the game and is not.Other things I would like to see are, head to head play within a league,a much more robust financial system,a more intuitive defensive ratings system and of course better AI across the board(my wish is for the AI to be able to manage a game on the fly with the cunning of a Tony LaRussa.

Better international scouting. Make a deadline and have a signing pool instead of the scouting director come once or twice a year with a usually bad prospect to sign.

I understand what your saying but there are more solo than online players i believe. However i know how much people wanted head to head and it never did get off the ground. I hope Markus wouldn't drop the game for single players as we have been supporting this game for years. But hey life go's on when all is said and done its only a game...

I'm pretty sure he's referred to OOTP11 and OOTP:OL as different entities, hasn't he?

This was the assumption I was going off of in my timeline post, but I've not been able to determine this for certain, at least not based on anything that Markus/Andreas/Steve have posted.
Can anyone in the know provide clarification? (OOTPOL = OOTP11 or no?)

It's good that the online game is a different entity from OOTP11. Still ... For years one of the justifications people have used for some of the problems with OOTP is that Markus is just one guy and has only so many hours to devote to working on the game. That's certainly a valid argument. My concern is that Markus will now of necessity be splitting his time between the solo and the online game, which will no doubt require a lot of work to get going. This could have a big impact on future development of "our" version of OOTP, especially if Markus finds that the financial returns from the online are greater than the solo edition of the game. As someone with zero interest in online play, this concerns me. Perhaps as some have suggested we'll see a scenario where OOTP11 is a couple of years down the road as the online game gets the lion's share of the attention.

Perhaps I'm an eternal optimist but I think the OOTP interface lends itself to easy web adaption. Underlying it are databases and procedural routines that decent programmers ( such as I presume Markus is ) won't find too hard to adapt to php. Or he might go with retaining exactly the same source code and compiling in a CGI interface.
Think about it: already with the click of a button OOTP spits out http reports, league news etc. The "online" aspect is practically half written I reckon. Of course this is all guessing, but as a life-long programmer it's educated guessing at least Yet my preference is the way it is at the moment - off-line application, solo play, with an ability to create on-line leagues. IMHO this is the best of all worlds. Couldn't we have an iPhone version of OOTPX ?

I believe Markus puts his heart and soul into the game. He created this thing from the ground up, from his imagination to a large community. My guess is that he won't abandon the OOTP series even if the online version takes off sky high. I would also bet they are trying to build the on-line version around the OOTP engine where possible, sharing code and linking them together in a way so that we won't be abandoned.

Count me among those who have little or no interest in playing online games in any respect. I understand the appeal; it just doesn't appeal to me (not anymore, anyway). I don't want to have to deal with others in order to play a game. I don't care about competing with my peers. The headaches of online games are greater than those of non-online games.
As conception talked about in the earlier post on this thread, I too like that instant feedback that comes with single-player games, along with shelling out a one-time fee. I also prefer to provide as little info as possible, financial and otherwise, over the 'net. There's a depth to SP games that online games are rarely able to capture, along with the greater control and customization. |
