The Chicago Hitmen surprised nobody in taking sluggeing prospect Babe Ruth with the first overall pick in this year's amateur draft. The 20-year-old Ruth is a power-hitting lefty expected to anchor the Hitmen lineup in short order. With Ruth and Albert Pujols the Hitmen have two of the game's top hitting prospects. Ruth is expected to take over regular right field duties for a Chicago team many feel will rebound this year after a horrible 2009 campaign. Between Pujols, Ruth, Mark Teixeira and Adam Dunn, the Hitmen should generate plenty of power, assuming the young players develop as expected.

The pick likely moves Milton Bradley to bench status, as Josh Hamilton will presumably move to center to allow Ruth to start in right.

The remainder of the first round went as follows:

Sacramento Stingers - RF Harry Heilmann
Los Angeles Idols - 3B Heinie Groh
Philadelphia Ringers - CF Cy Williams
Alabama Airmen - SP Ray Brown
Orlando Orcas - CF Benny Kauff
Las Vegas Bosses - CF Edd Roush
Indianapolis Engines - 1B Joe Harris
Charlotte Cougars - SP Pete Alexander
Louisville Racers - RF Billy Southworth
New Orleans Knights - 1B Jack Fournier
Arizona Sandmen - SS Willie Wells
New York Heroes - LF Joe Connolly
Memphis Strummers - C Bubbles Hargrave

Wichita Brigade - LF Rube Bressler

Thought you'd like that! They also got Negro League star pitcher Rube Foster in the second round, though I can't believe he fell that low. We'll see how the Hitmen respond this year. Catching the defending champs will be tough.

Will be a few days, but definitely this week will get things going. Need to make the schedule (the one gmo created for me was great, but had way too many off days) and do a little housecleaning before the season.

The Pastime Baseball League has announced a major rule change, implementing the designated hitter rule this season. The DH will be used in both leagues.

Entering the schedule. Time consuming stuff. But can't do another season with way too many off days.

Pastime Baseball League

Preseason 2010 Edition

The 16 teams of the Pastime Baseball League have reported to spring training and the exhibition season gets going in a matter of days. The Wichita Brigade look to defend their PBL championship and an influx of new talent from the November draft should bring changes around the league.

Here we will look at each team, recap their 2009 season and draft and address the biggest question surrounding each team.

Northern League East

Charlotte Cougars

2009 Record: 86-76, 3rd Place, 13 GB
Draft Recap: Pete Alexander (P), Lefty Tyler (P), Vean Gregg (P), Herb Pennock (P), Howie Shanks (LF)

Big Question: Will focus on pitching pay off?
The Cougars had the Northern League's #3 pitching staff last year, but only the #6 offense. And yet, the Cougars used their first four of five picks on pitching - and, to be fair, good pitching. It's hard to argue with Alexander, who many were surprised fell to #11. But beyond that, a team whose top offensive player posted an .816 OPS seems to need more than Shanks to boost the offense.

Louisville Racers

2009 Record: 87-75, 2nd Place, 12 GB
Draft Recap: Billy Southworth (RF), Gene Benson (RF), Johnny Bassler (C), Buck Weaver (SS), Jeff Tesreau (P)

Big Question: Can Brouthers do it again?
At the All-Star Break last season, it was a veritable lock that Dan Brouthers would win the Outstanding Hitter Award and, perhaps, the Triple Crown. He missed out on both, but his season - .336-51-145 - was a tremendous effort that led the Northern League's best offense. However, much as analysts question why Charlotte didn't address its weakness, the same holds for Louisville, which really needed more pitching. The failure to address that means either the pitchers behind ace Roy Oswalt need to step up, or Brouthers has to be brilliant yet again.

New York Heroes
2009 Record: 99-63, 1st Place, Lost NLCS to Wichita in 6 games
Draft Recap: Joe Connolly (LF), Irish Meusel (LF), Allen Sothoron (P), Bill James (P), Jim Viox (2B)

Big Question: Do Wright and Sizemore develop?
The Heroes had balance both in the lineup and the rotation last year, boasting the league's third best offense and second-best pitching staff. Consider that 7 players in the Northern League drove in 100+ runs last year...the Heroes had 3 of them. They drafted to keep that balance - including Jim Viox, who could be a steal in the fifth and final round. But their marketable young stars - David Wright and Grady Sizemore - could be key to New York making the next step. Both players evolved as the year went on, and Wright ultimately led all Northern League third basemen in RBI.

Philadelphia Ringers
2009 Record: 66-96, 4th Place, 33 GB
Draft Recap: Cy Williams (CF), George Burns (1B), Frank Snyder (C), Hank Severeid (C), Bill Doak (P)

Big Question: Is there any hope?
In 2009, the Ringers basically had Satchel Paige, Jim O'Rourke and little else. O'Rourke was great, but will likely shift to a corner as rookie Cy Williams enters the lineup. First base was a revolving door last season, and George Burns could fix that. Jocko Milligan struggled playing almost every day behind the plate, and now gets two solid prospects in Snyder and Severeid behind him. And Bill Doak could walk in as high as the #3 behind Paige and Charley Radbourn. As such, the Ringers could well be improved. Still, it's unlikely to be enough to get them near the top, at least this year.

Northern League West

Chicago Hitmen

2009 Record: 58-104, 4th Place, 50 GB
Draft Recap: Babe Ruth (RF), Rube Foster (P), Joe Bush (P), Dizzy Dismukes (P), Ossie Vitt (3B)

Big Question: How much impact can Ruth have?
He's the prize of the draft, the top pick and a once-in-a-lifetime talent. But can Babe Ruth save the Hitmen? It's important to remember that the Hitmen had virtually everything go wrong last year. They had injuries all over the place and were baseball's youngest team. The talent here is amazing to consider. Albert Pujols, Mark Teixeira, Adam Dunn, Josh Hamilton - a team that will greatly benefit from the PBL's move to the DH. Add a year of growth from Cy Young, Amos Rusie and Johan Santana and the incoming arms of Foster, Bush and Dismukes, and fans in Chicago have every reason to believe their team will improve. Sharing a division with the world champs is tough, but Chicago could hit .500 this year...a 23 game improvement.

Indianapolis Engines
2009 Record: 82-80, 2nd Place, 26 GB
Draft Recap: Joe Harris (1B), Les Nunamaker (C), Wally Pipp (1B), Milt Stock (3B), Ferdie Schupp (P)

Big Question: Are their pitchers indestructable?
The Engines had four starters make 33 or more starts last year, and ended up using an amazing nine pitchers TOTAL for the season, throwing a PBL-best 53 complete games. They drafted one pitcher and have only two on their reserve squad. If health falters on the staff, it will be a scramble to plug the holes.

Sacramento Stingers
2009 Record: 63-99, 3rd Place, 45 GB
Draft Recap: Harry Heilmann (RF), Ray Chapman (SS), Jake Daubert (1B), Bob Shawkey (P), Wilbur Cooper (P)

Big Question: Can they pitch?
Beyond Jim Devlin and Guy Hecker, the Stingers pitching was downright awful. Their team ERA came in a shade under 5, Bill Bernhard went 2-18 and Cole Hamels lost 16 games, too. The additions of Heilmann - who shoots into the PBL's top 5 prospects - Chapman and Daubert should help an already solid offense immediately. Shawkey and Cooper will be called on to produce, perhaps a bit too quickly. But they and Hamels, in particular, will need to step up if the Stingers are to make headway on the defending champs.

Wichita Brigade
2009 Record: 108-54, 1st Place, Won PBL Championship
Draft Recap: Rube Bressler (LF), Del Pratt (2B), George Cutshaw (2B), Claude Hendrix (P), Mike Gonzalez (C)

Big Question: Can they repeat?
The Brigade won their divison by 26 games, had their top four starters post ERA's below 3 - including the league's top pitcher, 27-game-winner Rube Waddell - and scored more than 5 runs a game. The drafting of two second basemen behind Robinson Cano, who was excellent last season, is surprising, but at this point nobody doubts Wichita's moves. They get benefit of the doubt, and their pitching alone makes them a good bet to repeat at the very least for the division crown.

Southern League East

Alabama Airmen

2009 Record: 72-90, 3rd Place, 33 GB
Draft Recap: Ray Brown (P), Eppa Rixey (P), Rube Benton (P), Stan Coveleski (P), Eddie Ainsmith (C)

Big Question: Does the offense grow up?
The Alabama Airmen drafted as many teams did, it seems, padding a strength rather than fixing a weakness. They took pitchers with the first four of their five draft picks, leaving the Southern League's next-to-worst offense to fend for itself. That's a lot of faith in Ed Delahanty (20), Jimmy Rollins (22), George Van Haltren (22) and Mike Tiernan (20) to develop this year from solid components to real forces.

Memphis Strummers

2009 Record: 105-57, 1st Place, Lost PBL Championship Series to Wichita
Draft Recap: Bubbles Hargrave (C), Ivey Wingo (C), Duffy Lewis (LF), Ray Caldwell (P), Shano Collins (RF)

Big Question: How good can Charleston be?
It may seem odd to ask how much better the reigning SL Outstanding Hitter can be, but it's a legitimate question. How many of those 57 doubles turn into add-ons to his 22 homers? Does he make the leap from 29 steals to, say, 40? Do either of those events pad his 133 runs or 133 RBI?

New Orleans Knights
2009 Record: 88-74, 2nd Place, 17 GB
Draft Recap: Jack Fournier (1B), Red Smith (3B), Jack Tobin (RF), Rabbit Maranville (SS), Tom Seaton (P)

Big Question: Who are the real Knights?
The putrid team that led to Tony LaRussa getting fired? The team that played great baseball for four months, stirring hopes of a dramatic pennant race. Or the team that crumbled down the stretch, drawing within striking distance without ever having the real chance to strike. Skipper Walter Alston has a full year with the troops he led to surge. It will be interesting to see what he can do with them.

Orlando Orcas
2009 Record: 72-90, 4th Place, 33 GB
Draft Recap: Benny Kauff (CF), Walton Cruise (LF), Red Faber (P), Larry Cheney (P), Reb Russell (P)

Big Question: Is Honus Wagner fixed?
He never went down with a major injury (in fact he played in every game), but Honus Wagner - thought before last year's inaugural season to be among the top 5 players in the PBL - wasn't right last year. How else do you explain a .237 batting average with 18 homers and 65 RBI. He struck out 165 times. Wagner alone, of course, won't make up 33 games. But this team will be much, much different if he performs to expectations.

Yeah, I would guess in the next 2 or 3 years that tandem is going to be quite a story in the PBL.

Its definitely going to be interesting to see how much Chicago can improve this year. Could they go from a 100 loss team to a 100 win team? Hard to believe they were that bad with the talent they had last year, and adding Ruth and Foster, wow.

Preseason 2010 Edition (cont)

Arizona Sandmen

2009 Record: 89-73, 1st Place, Lost SLCS to Memphis 4-0
Draft Recap: Willie Wells (SS), Hank Gowdy (C), Dutch Leonard (P), Ernie Shore (P), Jimmy Johnston (3B)

Big Question: Where will they play?
The drafting of Willie Wells should have a domino effect. Does Jose Reyes become a second baseman and Nap Lajoie move to first, where he played a bit last season. Unlikely, considering Lajoie won the Gold Glove. Pee Wee Butts and Bonnie Serrell will likely be bumped out, but the ideal world for Arizona sees Wells, Lajoie and Reyes - who they see as a potential offensive force in the leadoff spot - all in the lineup. Another team that could benefit from the DH being in effect this year.

Las Vegas Bosses

2009 Record: 74-88, 3rd Place, 15 GB
Draft Recap: Edd Roush (CF), Max Carey (CF), Roger Peckinpaugh (SS), Al Mamux (P), Ray Schalk (C)

Big Question: Enough offensive help?
It is likely that each of the four position players drafted will find their way into the starting lineup, upgrading four positions from the Southern League's worst offense in 2009. Catcher Tom Daly hit .188, and will surely give way to Ray Schalk. Corey Hart (.277-5-47) and Jimmy Ryan (.248-19-77) will likely surrender some at bats - certainly to Carey, a stalwart defensive player - and likely to Roush as well, who is not a polished product yet but a stellar talent. Roger Peckinpaugh won't take the job from Juan Uribe outright, but he'll get a chance if the erratic Uribe struggles.

Los Angeles Idols

2009 Record: 63-99, 4th Place, 26 GB
Draft Recap: Heinie Groh (3B), Tilly Walker (LF), Tommy Griffith (RF), Steve O'Neill (C), Phil Douglas (P)

Big Question: How fast will they mature?
Adrian Gonzalez, Justin Morneau, Miguel Cabrera and Hank Blalock all have a world of talent. None gave the Idols much to like last season. In order for Los Angeles to get anywhere this year, those four will all need to produce, with Morneau likely doing so from the newly available DH spot.

San Antonio Sheriffs

2009 Record: 84-78, 2nd Place, 5 GB
Draft Recap: Dolf Luque (P), Wally Schang (C), Dick Rudolph (P), Bobby Veach (LF), Sam Jones (P)

Big Question: Will the collapse linger?
The division was San Antonio's to win. Up 4 1/2 games on Oct. 1, the team lost 9 1/2 games in the next 2 1/2 weeks to lose the division by 5. The talent is there, but a lot will be up to whether the team can collectively shake off the end of last year and rebound. There's no individual player that rests with, though many eyes will be on the disappointing Hugh Duffy (.245-17-86).

Yeah, they just had a lot of bad breaks last year. This lineup could be the PBL's most potent if it hits on all cylinders, and the staff could be great, too. They are definitely the most followable franchise as far as star power.
