1964 Stanley Cup Finals preview

San Jose Sharks (105-57) vs. Hartford Whalers (117-45)

What a great Stanley Cup Finals we will have in 1964! The two best teams in baseball/hockey, Hartford and San Jose, look unbeatable. Actually, since losing the first game of the playoffs, the Whalers have been unbeatable. They have won 12 games in a row. The Sharks haven't been too shabby either, winning 12 games and losing only 2 en route to the Finals.

This series is a rematch of 1955 and 1958. The Whalers won in 1955, and the Sharks won in 1958. Hartford has won 11 Stanley Cups, and is trying to repeat. The Sharks' victory in '58 is their lone Stanley Cup title.

My prediction: Hartford in six.

Stanley Cup Finals, Game 1

The Whalers were trailing 9-4 going to the bottom of the 5th, and things were looking good for San Jose. But eleven unanswered runs for Hartford gave them a 15-9 lead, and that was basically it. The Whalers won their 13th consecutive game.

Hartford leads the series, 1 game to 0.

Stanley Cup Finals, Game 2

The Sharks stole Game 2 from the Whalers in the 9th inning, and Hartford's 13-game winning streak is history.

The series is tied at 1.

Stanley Cup Finals, Game 7

1964 Stanley Cup Champions: San Jose Sharks
1958 / 1964

After six innings in Game Seven, it appeared to be over for the Sharks. They only had 1 run on 1 hit and were trailing 4-1. But in the 7th, Hartford's Francisco Ramirez lost the strike zone, and starting walking everybody. This allowed San Jose to get back into the game. They scored 4 runs in the 7th to take a 5-4 lead, and another 4 in the 8th to lead 9-4. Hartford didn't give up as they tried rallying back. In the 9th, they actually cut San Jose's lead to 10-9 with nobody out and the tying run on second base. But the Sharks were able to hold on for a miraculous Stanley Cup Championship.

To tell you the truth, I didn't know who to root for in this past Stanley Cup Finals. I was a little bit saddened that Hartford lost in such heartbreaking fashion, but I'm happy that San Jose won, because the Sharks are the team that I've been following the most closely.

1965 Standings

The defending Champion Sharks will get the Blues in the first round of the playoffs. It seems like those two teams have been playing each other an awful lot in recent years. They've developed a good rivalry.

San Jose Sharks' 1965 stats

Look at the stats of SP John Whitehead. He is a solid candidate to win the best pitcher award in the Western Conference.

It's interesting how the Sharks didn't have a single guy who hit more than 33 HR's, but as a team they led the conference in that category.

West Quarterfinals: St. Louis vs. San Jose, Games 1-4

SJ leads 1-0
series tied at 1
StL leads 2-1
StL leads 3-1

Wow, San Jose is really in trouble, and it all started with the 5 runs they allowed in the 9th inning of Game Two.

West Quarterfinals: St. Louis vs. San Jose, Games 5-7

StL leads 3-2
series tied 3-3
StL wins 4-3

A year after winning the Stanley Cup, and surging to a 112-50 record, the San Jose Sharks' season comes to a shocking end in Game Seven at home. The #8 seed St. Louis Blues are moving on to the next round.

The regular season series between the two teams was close, with San Jose winning 7 games to 5. St. Louis just played a little better in the playoffs.

Anybody who watches hockey knows that upsets happen all the time in the playoffs. You just have to deal with it and move on to the next season.

Eastern Conference Game 7's

There were two Game 7's in the East. Here's what happened:

For the 2nd year in a row, the New Jersey Devils have advanced in the playoffs as a #7 seed.

The Boston Bruins have failed again as a higher seed in the playoffs. I believe that this is the 3rd time in the past four years. They have been eliminated by the #6 Florida Panthers.

Home teams went 0-3 in the Conference Quarterfinal Game Sevens.
