I know the Cowboys have their Ring of Honor, The Yankees have their special wall out in center field, and the Celtics have retired so many numbers they are out of them, but I still have to say what Fulham FC is doing for American striker Brian McBride is way, way cooler.

It reminds me of that John Wayne film The Green Berets were one of the soldiers asked if his name could be used if he died in Vietnam, turned out he wanted his name to be used on the toilets so they named it Provo's Privy.

What I think really tops this story off is why they are commemorating McBride. Oh he's one of the greatest American players of all-time and surely one of the better players Fulham has had. But he reached heroic status with Fulham fans for his efforts to rescue the club from relegation. Most Americans don't really get that. They expect team heroes to be immortalized for winning titles. But an American football player in England gets immortalized by his club for keeping his team from finishing last or next to last.

I'm not trying to belittle the achievement as I realize this is worth something like $60M to the club, just kind of ironic that a guy gets a pub named after him for helping his club finish in 18th place.

Jimmy Glass played 3 games for Carlisle United and helped his team finish 91st in the English league ladder, he's an hero in Carlisle they still talk about him and always will.

I think it's hard for most American sports fans to understand why people like McBride and Glass become heroes simply because they don't have a promotion and relegation system in any of their sports, none that I know of anyway.

The closest thing in the US would be college football bowl games, but even that most people are trying to write them down these days.

I don't think it will happen in my life to be honest but I can see a time when promotion and relegation will be wiped out of sports in England, it's already started in one of my favourite sports in rugby league were teams have been awarded franchises but they are looked at every 3 years to see if they can keep their franchise or be replaced. Whats the criteria in America say the MLB ? Do they have to keep up with certain standards or can they literaly run their franchise into the ground and just keep on taking in money from various sources.
