Financial Settings Question

TLDR? just read second paragraph

I'm playing a Standard '09 season as SF Giants. During the '09 season, Zito gets hurt, and when he comes back he is _terrible_! He's only half star (scouting turned off), and can't pitch more than 2-3 innings before he's giving up runs ever inning. To top it off, he refuses minor league assignment. In the 2010 season, I'm shooting for the playoffs, which means I can't have a stubborn half star starting pitcher mucking up the rotation. So I decide I'll bite the bullet, and just eat his contract ($96M penalty for cutting Zito in '10 season, ouch). I figure I'll be okay though, because I already have a stellar lineup from a few trades during the season (M. Cain for P. Fielder?, seems good to me). And picked up some great free agents before I cut Zito (Harden to replace Zito, oh yea!) 2010 was a great season. My Giants ended up 101-61, best record in the majors. Sadly, got swept by the wildcard team in the first round.

Anyhow, enough back story, onto the problem. Ending the 2010 season I still had -$51M balance from the Zito deal. But starting in 2011, I only had -$10M even. Is there any reason I'd want such an unrealistic setting? Is it some fix to the AI, and I should just not cut people to make my budget in the red? Is there a way to turn it off?

Check your max cash settings in the financial options. I believe the max listed there is the maximum you can go either positive or negative. Your setting is probably $10M. You can set this cash max to whatever you like, but there are consequences to messing with it if you don't know what you are doing. I would advise checking around the forums for the various threads on financials for more info. (Or maybe someone else will stop by here and clarify what you need to look out for.)

You can't change your cash maximum by editing the league setup options without affecting every team in the league and if you make this number higher, the computer GM's tend to freak out when the are stoked with cash and choke themselves on it.....

So, the best option, if you want your team to have to pay for Zito is to go into your own team's financial data and add the expense to your current reserve. Just remember to do this each preseason, because it will reset to the minimum when the year flips....
