I have a fictional league running now with-
Pittsburgh Nationals Cincinnati Falcons, Relocated Baltimore team. Milwaukee Monarchs Georgia Blazers. All my team nicknames come from a database I made up with tons of nicknames. I then would select 3 or 4 with a random number generator and pick the best one. As if the fans chose them. I tried to stay away from goofy names that no major league team would use or anything totally out of whack like the Cincinnati Surfers or Los Angeles Desert Frogs or something goofy like that. |

Off the top of my head, Silvam and Tombair have created some great jerseys, but there are many others spending their valuable personal time creating caps, jerseys and logos for the community. Go to the OOTP 9 mods forum and look around. Somewhere, somebody has created a jersey that will be perfect for your team.

Millwaukee Robins (Lame reference to the state bird)
Atlanta Empire (Georgia is sometimes refered to as the Empire state of the south- Quote Wikipedia )Cincinnati Flint (State stone) Pittsburg Pretzels (Pennsylvania leads all other states in the production of pretzels, kind of wacky, but I like the alliteration) I like to name teams after state symbols a lot, as you can see. All info came from wikipedia. |

I am very fond of using the "Robin" name and I especially like the Milwaukee Robins suggestions....classic, simple, applicable to the state. |

Any team in Atlanta should be called the Crackers, period. The Atlanta Crackers were a great minor league franchise.
The origins of the team's name are unknown, according to Tim Darnell, who wrote The Crackers: Early Days of Atlanta Baseball [5]. There are several theories as to the origin of the word cracker: * The name comes from the sound of whips used to drive cattle and oxen. Florida and Georgia cattlemen cracked whips to flush their stock out of the scrub while settlers used whips to spur on oxen that pulled their carts and wagons. Cracker has been used in this sense since the early 1800s. This is the most popular theory today. See Cracker Country * The word also comes from the practice of "corncracking" or grinding dried corn for use as grits and meal, as in the lyrics of the folk song Blue Tailed Fly, "Jimmy crack corn." When used in this sense, a Cracker is somebody who can’t afford any other food. And, by the 1800s, the name "Cracker" wasn’t used to describe only impoverished settlers. * It may have been a shortened version of the name of a 19th century professional baseball team, the Atlanta Firecrackers. * It could be a reference to a then-colloquial term for someone who is quick and smart, a variant on "Cracker Jack ballplayer", for example. While the "Georgia cracker" is the most obvious association, it raises a question as to why a Negro League ball club would have called itself "Black Crackers". Georgia history books once explained that stagecoach and wagon drivers, using whips to speed up their teams, would often respond "I'm a cracker from Georgia" when asked of their origin. This usage, extending to post-Civil War years, would have crossed racial lines and would not have had any derogatory connotation. |

I think when the name of the team goes from Firecrackers one year to Crackers the next, then you'd have to assume there is a connection.....
I like the name also because of the "Crack" of the bat alludes to these players being good contact hitters.... |

Atlanta Crackers
Atlanta Grays (Civil War) Atlanta Scarlets (Gone With The Wind) Pittsburgh Grays (for the great Negro team, the Homestead Grays... Homestead, PA is near Pittsburgh) Milwaukee Warriors (in honor of the Indian tribes that settled the area) "Milwaukee" is an Indian word meaning "good, beautiful, pleasant land" There is also a secondary alliteration with the "w's" in Milwaukee and Warriors. It is a very euphonic name. Cincinnati Centurions (in honor of the city's namesake Cincinnatus, the great Roman Consul and Dictator... a model of virtue and simplicity... Cincinnatus gave up his absolute power after winning a war and returned to his farm) Last edited by Eugene Church; 07-24-2009 at 05:35 PM. |

[edit] I should have mentioned, the Grays were awesome!, with no less than 12 HOFers. Martín Dihigo was one of the best players, at any level, ever. Last edited by JLK; 07-25-2009 at 04:37 PM. |

If you go there, then you should add the Pittsburgh Crawfords also, since they were, at one time, as well known as the Grays.

Eugene- I'm going to wimp out on answering your question for the time being, but it's an honest "wimp out"... I am currently on vacation visiting some friends (in Atlanta!) and have been away from the game for a while. So many good suggestions, I'll have to think about the final selections on my way home.
I do believe I've settled on the Milwaukee Stags. I like the name and think it fits that area of the country. I am also partial to the Pittsburgh Ironmen, but not committed to it yet. The Atlanta name is the toughest I think, but being in the city the last week I can confirm that Blazers, Heat, Fire, or "Sweaters" would all do nicely ;-) |
