Hundreds of fictional players dumped in the free agent pool...

I am doing a "test" season and right before the end of the season, there were literally 700 or more fictional players dumped into the free agent pool. How and why did this happen and how do I stop it from happening again? There are approx. 50 legit (REAL PLAYERS) free agents that were never signed and I don't want to lose them. My financials are off, my scouting is on and fictional players are blocked from reaching the majors.

You say this is a test league.
But now might be a good time to work out how you want to play the game for real.

I mention this because, what you are describing is what I would expect.

Do you want to play current MLB?
In which case, do you just want to play for 1 season?
(much more than this and it will start to become fictional anyway)

You could select "Allow incomplete minors".(which would not create fictional fill-ins)
But if you have a Ammy draft then fictional players will be created next season.
If you don't allow fictional players into the ML....
what will do when you run out of real players?

Of course you could always go Historical.

Yes, I do want to play for more than one season. I totally forgot about the amateur draft, that's where all those players are coming from!

But if my financials are off, wouldn't these players just automatically be signed to the teams that drafted them?

Yes the ones that were drafted would be.
But the drafts allow for chance to get rid of the dead wood.
So the Free Agent list would include players not picked up in the Ammy draft and players released by teams to allow space for the drafted players (and others that are not required).
