Question How to add a fictional player to an historical game

I know this sounds stupid, but I can't figure out how to add a fictional player. In a fictional league there are some screens (Free Agent, for one) that have a Create Fictional Player button at the bottom. In those games all I need to do is hit the button, then edit the resulting player to my satisfaction.

Apparently you can only do this in a historical game if you make the right selections during league creation, and I have not been able to. Can anyone tell me how to set up the league to allow one lonely fictional player? I even tried hitting the 'fill teams with fictional players' button, but no players were created.

I don't have the game in front of me, but is it possible you can only do this during the off season?

Another thought: Go into Commissioner mode so that you can see the player editor; choose a scrub historical player in the minors; edit everything to your liking for your new fictional guy.

Red face

Rasnell, thank you for responding. I'm sorry that I went away from the board right after starting this thread.

For your first suggestion, I am trying to do this during the offseason, which is to say on January 1st, with spring training commencing in early March.

Your second suggestion would be a good one, except that I'm playing with five year recalc. This means (I assume) that every year my player will revert to scrub status, and that he'll retire young. (Being a scrub, presumably he'll have a short career, even though I haven't enabled 'retire according to history'.) If he reverts, do I just need to re-input his fictional ratings again?

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Any explanations?

Not sure what's happening there, I've never had any problems using the "create fictional player" option from the FA's screen in any type of league or at any time of year.

Fromwhat I have read on these forums, fictional players and recalc don't get along anyway. Even if you did create one, you may have trouble with his ratings (especially defense) going all wonky every year.

I just tried again, and the 'create fictional player' button is now there. Don't know what happened, but thank you.

And thanks to the other posters who tried to help. Guess I was just caught in an alternate reality vortex.
