Game #50 – Chicago (A) White Sox [26-23] (M. Buehrle 4-4, 3.04 ERA) at Kansas City Royals [22-26] (J. Wright 2-3, 4.66 ERA)

Chicago (A) lineup: CF Wise – SS Ramirez – RF Dye – 1B Konerko – 3B Fields – DH Thome – LF Anderson – 2B Doolittle – C Pierzynski
Kansas City lineup: CF Crisp – 2B Callaspo – DH Butler – 3B Gordon – RF Guillen – LF DeJesus – 1B Bloomquist – SS Aviles – C Olivo

Chicago (A) 1
Kansas City 0 (10)
W: M. Buehrle (5-4) L: J. Wright (2-4)
HR – CHA: J. Dye (2)

Wow. What a well-pitched game. Wright couldn't have done any more for the Royals. He went 9+ innings, gave up only 3 hits, but one of them was Dye's 300th career homer. He walked 1 and struck out 3. Buehrle, however, was absolutely amazing. After this game, many are saying he's the best pitcher in baseball. He went the distance (only 105 pitches), gave up 6 hits, and struck out 2. Just an amazing, amazing game.

Thanks. It always helps to know someone else is reading. The Tigers are currently the second best team in baseball at 31-20, behind only the A's who have a 32-18 record.

I'm getting to the point where I need to start thinking about where I'm at. I'm probably going to trade Thome, since he wants $26 million over 2 years, and I can replace him when Quentin comes back. Dotel wants to test free agency, so there's a chance I trade him as well. We'll have to see how things go the next month or so.

FIRING

The first GM firing of the season has taken place. Jon Daniels is out in Texas. This isn't really surprising, considering the team had the worst record in the majors at 14-35.

ATHLETICS-MARLINS TRADE
Oakland has traded 35-year-old third baseman Nomar Garciaparra and $600,000 to the Florida Marlins for 25-year-old starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez and 19-year-old minor league starting pitcher Graham Johnson.

This season Garciaparra is batting .263 with 45 hits and 2 home runs. He has scored 13 times and has 16 RBI. He will split time between starting at third and shortstop.

This season Sanchez is 2-5 in 11 starts (51 innings), has 47 strikeouts and a 5.65 ERA. He will be Oakland's fourth starter.

Graham Johnson was assigned to the AZL Athletics of the Rookie League and will be their ace. He is Oakland's 18th ranked prospect (12th ranked pitching prospect).

Game #51 – Chicago (A) White Sox [27-23] (J. Danks 5-2, 4.10 ERA) at Kansas City Royals [22-27] (L. Hudson 3-4, 4.13 ERA)
Chicago (A) lineup: CF Wise – SS Ramirez – RF Dye – 1B Konerko – 3B Fields – DH Thome – LF Anderson – 2B Doolittle – C Pierzynski
Kansas City lineup: CF Crisp – 2B Callaspo – DH Butler – 3B Gordon – RF Guillen – LF DeJesus – 1B Teahen – SS Aviles – C Olivo

Chicago (A) 3
Kansas City 2 (11)
W: B. Jenks (1-2) L: R. Mahay (1-1) S: M. Thornton (1)
HR – CHA: B. Myrow (1)

This was another pretty good pitching duel. It was good to see Danks bounce back after his last start. Both teams put a run up in the first inning, Konerko doubling home Wise and Callaspo scoring on yet another error by Fields. We took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a Wise RBI groundout, and we took that lead into the ninth. Jenks came in and I was feeling pretty good. Until he walked DeJesus and Teahen to start the inning. Jacobs pinch hit and flew out to center, allowing DeJesus to tag up and move to third. Lubanski pinch hit and grounded out to shortstop, but it allowed DeJesus to score the tying run. After a scoreless tenth, Myrow, who came in as a defensive replacement at first in the ninth, hit a 2-out solo shot 421 feet to right center to give us the lead. Thornton came in and struck out the side to give us the win.

Yup, i'm reading.

You could probably get major league talent back in a trade with thome/dotel......and maybe a plus prospect or two as well.

WEEK/MONTH IN REVIEW
Well, we currently sit at 28-23, 3 games back of the Tigers. Though we're only 3 back, I feel like tough decisions are coming. Detroit is playing out of their minds, but I'm also about $12 million over budget. I think I'm going to start looking for trade partners for Thome and Dotel at least.

Another thing to think about is the draft coming up in a couple weeks. I'm really excited, as my scouting director says there are some potential studs in the draft. Whether or not any of them fall to me at number 22 is to be seen, but hopefully they do.

Overall, this coming month is going to be a very important one for the direction of this team this season. I'm excited to see what happens.

I thought so at first, too. But now I don't think so. I just tried to shop both of them and nobody offered anything for either one.

And that, my friends, is why they're the best team in baseball. We were up 6-1 after the first inning. SIX TO ONE!!! And they still came back and beat us. Our lead was gone by the halfway point of the game, and it was downhill from there. Travis Buck went 3 for 6 with a double and 5 RBIs against us.

Game #54 – Oakland Athletics [33-19] (S. Gallagher 6-1, 3.90 ERA) at Chicago (A) White Sox [29-24] (G. Floyd 3-4, 5.03 ERA)

We were tied at 3 after the third inning, each team putting up a 2-run and a 1-run inning. Moving to the top of the sixth, things started off well, with Cust grounding out to Ramirez and Buck striking out. Ellis walked on four straight, but Floyd got Suzuki to ground to Ramirez. Unfortunately, Ramirez booted it, and there were 2 men on with 2 out and Wilson Betemit came to the plate and hit the 1-2 pitch 373 feet to right. We scored one in the eighth and one in the ninth, but Konerko flew out to left with runners on first and third to end the game.

Game #55 – Oakland Athletics [34-19] (A. Sanchez 2-5, 5.65 ERA) at Chicago (A) White Sox [29-25] (M. Buehrle 5-4, 2.69 ERA)

Oakland lineup: CF Davis – 2B Ellis – LF Holliday – DH Cust – RF Buck – 1B Barton – C Powell – SS Cabrera – 3B Crosby
Chicago (A) lineup: SS Ramirez – 2B Kroeger – RF Dye – 1B Konerko – 3B Fields – DH Thome – CF Anderson – LF Wise – C Miller

Chicago (A) 7
W: B. Jenks (2-2) L: B. Ziegler (4-4)
HR – CHA: C. Miller (2), J. Fields (10)

This was a game I felt we needed to win with Buehrle on the mound. However, it didn't quite go how I expected. The first seven innings went well. We were up 5-0 after seven, thanks mostly to a 3-run homer by Corky Miller in the seventh.

However, in the eighth, things completely fell apart. Crosby led off the inning with a double, Davis singled to move Crosby to third, Ellis reached on an error by Kroeger, scoring Crosby and moving Davis to second. Holliday singled to score Davis. Cust singled to score Ellis, and after giving up 3 runs, that was it for Buehrle. Thornton came in and got Buck to pop out to third for the first out, but gave up a base hit to Barton to score Holliday. Cust and Barton moved up a base thanks to a throwing error by Dye. Dotel came in and got Powell to strike out for the second out. Sweeney pinch hit and drew a walk to load the bases, Betemit pinch hit and drew another walk to score a run, and Davis walked to bring in another run, and suddenly we were down 6-5. Ellis grounded out to short to end the inning.

It stayed that way until the ninth. Ziegler came in to close it out for the A's. Ramirez led off the inning with a base hit, and Kroeger doubled to move Ramirez to third. Dye came up and hit a single through the left side, Ramirez scored, and Kroeger beat the throw home to give us the win!

Miller had a great day from the number nine spot. He went 2 for 4 with a home run, 4 RBIs, and a run scored.

We sure do like to make things exciting for the home crowd. Jermaine hit a 3-run homer in the fifth to give us a 4-3 lead, but Cleveland tied it up in the eighth. WEEK IN REVIEW
We went 3-4 this week to bring our record to 31-27, 5.5 games back of Detroit and 3.5 back of Tampa Bay in the Wild Card race. We split 4 games with Oakland, which I wasn't too upset with, but then lost 2 out of 3 to the Indians, which we can't afford to do. We called Mollenhauer back up to provide us some depth and sent down Brandon Allen to get some more seasoning in Triple A.

We also made a minor league trade, sending right fielder Michael Restovich to the Cubs for minor league starting pitchers Larry Suarez and Dae-Eun Rhee. My scout absolutely loves Rhee, thinking he could be a future ace, but I'm tempering my optimism. Restovich wanted a chance to play in the majors, and he wasn't going to get that chance here. He's not going to get that chance with the Cubs, either, having been assigned to their Double A affiliate in Tennessee, but now he's someone else's problem.

Rhee and Suarez were both assigned to Bristol of the Rookie League. Rhee will be their ace and Suarez their number 2. Rhee is ranked by Baseball America as our seventh-best prospect (#3 pitcher), and Suarez comes in at number 13 overall for us (#6 pitcher).

Game #61 – Detroit Tigers [38-21] (J. Bonderman 0-0, 0.00 ERA) at Chicago (A) White Sox [31-29] (J. Danks 5-2, 3.66 ERA)

Detroit lineup: CF Granderson – 2B Polanco – RF Ordonez – 1B Cabrera – DH Guillen – C Laird – 3B Hatteberg – LF Raburn – SS Santiago
Chicago (A) lineup: CF Wise – 2B Ramirez – RF Dye – 1B Konerko – 3B Mollenhauer – DH Thome – LF Kroeger – C Pierzynski – SS Beckham

HR – DET: C. Guillen (4), M. Ordonez (9), M. Cabrera (17), C. Granderson 2 (7) CHA: J. Thome (19), A. Ramirez (6)

Surprise, surprise. Detroit is a much better team than we are. Danks started off getting the first two outs of the game, then gave up back-to-back-to-back homers to Ordonez, Cabrera, and Guillen. Both teams ended up with nine hits, but the Tigers were able to take advantage of them and we weren't. Granderson had a great game. He went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, 4 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Hopefully we can avoid the sweep tomorrow.
