Ghost feature not working?

I'll start by acknowledging that this could be my own ignorance at work here.

I seem to be unable to run an historical league without fictional players appearing.

Ghost players is turned on, and has been since league inception.

I run from the mid-50's until 1960, with Gambo's X historical database, MLB players only. Autoplay until 1960, when I pick up the Senators in October, in time for expansion. I look at the available players for the expansion draft and the list is loaded with fictional players. I clicked the box preventing players from reaching the majors unless they really did, so no fictional players have ML stats. However, the other expansion AI seems set on picking up these bogus players. Plus it is a PIA to scroll through the list to find "real" players for my team.

Is this a bug or my own error here? I thought the ghost player feature was supposed to prevent fictional players from appearing.

TIA

That's the easiest part to answer. You can have both fictional players and ghost players. The primary benefit of ghosts is that you always have someone to fill a lineup in one of your minor leagues, regardless of how many uninjured or rested players you have on a minor league team.

The only reason I can think of why you would have fictional players, using the Gambo DB or any other DB is that when you created the game, you selected the option to "required full minor league rosters". That option essentially tells the game engine to create fictional players.

Steve, isn't that the same option? The box I have checked says, "allow incomplete minor league rosters (ghost players)".

No, there is also a "require full minor league rosters" check box during league creation that fills the minor leagues up with fictional players regardless of the ghost player setting.

It looks like you checked that if you specified for fictional players not to reach the ML; that choice is only available if you choose to require full minor league rosters. So these players will not show up in your ML, but they are still available to be selected in the expansion draft because you can choose minor league players in the draft.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is a fix for this except to recreate the league.

I'm okay with restarting if it fixes the problem. I've already restarted 3 times and keep getting the same error - going to try again now and see if this fixes my problem. Thanks to you and Steve both for responding.

If you use the wizard, it is on step 3.

EDIT: I didn't see that exact checkbox in Advanced Mode, but I guess it defaults to requiring full minor league rosters if you check on the 'Block fictional players from reaching majors'.

OK - I THINK I know what I did wrong...

Under historical rookies option, I unchecked the box that says "Automatically Import Historical Rookies" in previous setups, thinking this affected my ability to conduct a rookie draft. It obviously doesn't, and unchecking it probably sent OOTP into fictional factory mode. Going to check it this time and see if this fixes my problem.

Yes, that is another way you get fictionals. If you conduct a draft of any kind, you will get fictionals, because how else is the game going to fill out a draft class? The conventional way is to check the "Automatically import ..." option, and to turn off any draft.
