ICC World Twenty Twenty
Three great games so far.
Netherlands beat England (the hosts) in the opener to make all the headlines yesterday. So far today Scotland scored 89 off 7 overs in a rain shortened affair to threaten another upset against New Zealand, but the Kiwis managed to get to the target with a whole over to spare. Then West Indies produced a fantastic display to knock off Australia in style - Chris Gayle and Jerome Taylor were the stars of the show. Still one more game to go today with reigning champions India favourites against Bangladesh. Looking forward to more great games in the coming weeks. |

England managed a comfortable victory over Pakistan to get through.
Yesterday was another good day with 'minnows' Ireland (still considered such even though they made the Final 8 in the last 50-over World Cup) beating Bangladesh and the lovely sight to an Englishman of Australia losing their second match in a row and hence being elminated from the tourney. Only one place left to be decided in the last eight with Pakistan facing the Netherlands today needing a win to go through and prevent the Dutch from making the headlines. |

Seems kind of weird that in the 50 over world cup the teams play so many games but in the T20 they play less. Pretty silly that a team can lose twice and already be out of it.

The last 50 over world cup was widely derided for taking too long and not being interesting enough.
If anything the T20 version is too short - I am sure there is a happy medium somewhere. |

We are now 1 match into the second stage for all teams left in.
In Group F, Sri Lanka look like the class with a dangerous and varied bowling attack. The question is their batting deep enough to overcome any early setbacks. The second semi-final spot should be decided in the match between New Zealand and Pakistan as it seems that Ireland's best is behind them and they were always going to be outclassed anyway. West Indies' win over India last night thanks to Dwayne Bravo (4 for 38 and 66 not out off 36 balls) puts the holders in a hole in Group E. They now face England on Sunday with the losers being eliminated in all likelihood (there is a scenario where 1 win can make the semi-finals). England looked awful on Thursday against South Africa but the Proteas are in great form and England proved in the first round that they can be dangerous when they are scrapping for their lives. This made me laugh. It happened the other week in an English domestic Twenty Twenty match. |

Ireland have got every chance here against Sri Lanka, SL are 126-5 in the 18th over.
Edit, they finished on 144-9, which is a gettable target for Ireland. Last edited by Cryomaniac; 06-14-2009 at 11:12 AM. |

2 enjoyable games yesterday.
Ireland put up a great show, but their lack of batting depth showed in the end. England v India was extremely tense and very close. England won by 3 runs and it really could have gone either way. James Foster's stumping of Yuvraj Singh proved to be very important because antoher over or so of Yuvraj could have swung the game India's way. The reigning champs are now out. England v West Indies today becomes a straight knockout with the winners qualifying for the semi-finals and the losers being knocked out. |

West Indies beat England to progress in a rain affected match. England probably didn't have enough runs anyway, but it would have been an interesting chase if the rain hadn't come.
Just 5 more games left in the tournament. |

Hats off to the Sky reporter who asked an England coach some difficult questions and really held his feet to the fire. A rare thing in this age of corporate sport broadcasting.

Only the final to go now.
Pakistan shocked previously unbeaten South Africa yesterday thanks to some big hitting and good bowling from Shahid Afridi. The Proteas lost a few too many early wickets (including the in-form AB de Villiers) in chasing a gettable total and fell too far behind the run rate. Today, Sri Lanka had Tillekeratne Dilshan's 94 not out to thank for getting them to 158. Then the West Indies incredibly lost 3 wickets in the first over (all bowled, but none clean bowled) and the Sri Lankan spinners did the rest. An all-Asian final on Sunday at Lord's and it should be a doozy. |

A pretty good finish to the tournament.
Mohammed Aamir and Abdul Razzaq had Sri Lanka in trouble eatly, then Kumar Sangakarra with help from Angelo Mathews gave them a total to defend. Pakistan batted snsibly and were probably always favourites, but they still needed 28 off the last 18 balls. The 18th over proved to be decisive as a six, a four and a no-ball meant 19 runs off the over to all but seal it. Shahid 'Boom Boom' Afridi was the Pakistani hero with the bat again with another 50 following on from his one in the semi. |
