Spring Training
I'm not sure if this is a bug or not.
I'm playing a MLB 2009 season. Virtually no changes to the standard defaults for 2009. I've simmed through 2009 and 2010 and am now playing 2011. I have noticed at the beginning of both 2010 and 2011 spring trainings that on the day spring training begins, my roster is automatically populated up to the 40 person max. Is this a new "feature" of OOTPX when you have the AI managing your minor leagues? Since I've played OOTP, I've always had the AI take care of minor league stuff but they've never made the decision about who to send to spring training before. Are they doing that now? |

This is by design. All players on the 40 man roster are automatically invited to Spring Training in real life, but that's not why OOTP does this. It is to plug the hole where a team could keep a guy in the minors forever.
Some time ago, OOTP got the rule added where a player on the 40 man roster uses up an option on Opening Day. So far, so good. The problem is that if you never put him on the "Active" roster, then you never have to send him down, and he's never forced to go through waivers. This is a loophole to be exploited and kills the whole idea of options. So, now OOTP puts all players on Active at the start of spring training, and you need to option 15 of them back to the minors at some point...exposing those without remaining options to waivers. While the concept of an Active Roster in spring training does not match the real world, it's the best OOTP has right now.

So I guess I should take a look at my 40 man roster during the offseason and make sure the guys I want in Spring training are on it?

You can always promote players during Spring Training itself if you'd rather wait. If your 40-man roster was already full, you'd have to waive players to remove them from that roster in order to make room for new players no matter when you did it.
