The need for minor league position player minimums

What do I mean?

Have you ever noticed that you have 49 players in Rookie ball and only 1 catcher?

Have you had a couple of injuries to your middle infielders in AA and now have no backups at 2B, 3B and SS?

The AI is horrible at roster management..especially at normal+ injuries.

The solution?

Position minimums for non human controlled teams.

For rosters under 30 players there should be required a minimum of

2 catchers
3 corner infielders
3 middle infielders
3 corner outfielders
2 center fielders

pitcher minimums should vary by endurance settings

For rosters over 30 players

3 catchers
7 total infielders
6 total outfielders

When injuries hit the AI should sign FA's immediatly if they fall below.

Any thought?

I will second that. For those of us who enjoy minor league ball, it would enhance the game tremendously. As it stands, it is near impossible to coach in Rookie ball for exactly this reason.

I find in my Short A team I am always given the required about but for 1 game I only had 1 catcher. I then looked at the organazation and found the rookie league had 1 and everyone else above my team had 2, the GM fixed it the next day.

as for position players I rarely hold much stock in position rating, but I tend to favor fielding ratings, if you have a guy with high OF Range, arm and error, he will do fine anywhere, for in field I put a stong arm at 3rd with good range, put a SS in with good all around stats and DP high, Second needs range and DP, and first I like good error numbers.

Especally at the minor league level, you will have much success teaching players these postions, and more often than not the players with high positon ratings do worse than the lower ones I put in. Just make sure the guy is not over rated by your scout or you may have a few more errors and such.

To avoid scout error I look at stats as soon as possible and keep and ey on the guy with most range and error percentage and keep in starting as long as he can hit some

I would add to that the need for minimum SP (at least based on OOTP9 ... haven't played enough X to know if it's been addressed).
I've seen the AI using 2-man rotations in the minors until their arms blew up. Not exactly how I'd like to see my development squad working ...

GM: How's LaLoosh coming along?
Minor league manager: Excellent ... 250 innings pitched and it's only June. He'll be out of the cast next week and should be ready to give me 12-15 innings the first start back. We'll need him; Jones has started 9 of our last 11 and he's starting to look a little ragged ...

I found that they always keep me stocked up with pithers, in 9 I went down to a 3 man rotation. In 10 I think the fewiest I have had are 6 people that they said could start, most the time I had 7, I keep 2 in my bull pin for long releaf

Pitching doesnt seem to be an issue this iteration. Its the 1 catcher (at 17% stamina and completely exhausted) on a 49 man roster that has me concerned.

My poor catcher really needs a vacation.

This is a good idea. I had 24 1B on my Rookie League team in addition to pitchers. No C, 3B, SS, or CF. The team had 44 players! That was in 2009. In 2010, I have two "A"-ball team, the second "A"-ball team has 0 players but the first one has 28!

great idea. would help a ton not only for your own team but for all the teams. That might help increase the ai's ability to develop its own players too.

I would hope to be able to turn all of this off if it made it in. I micromanage my minors, so I have no need of any such 'help' (read: interference) from the AI.

But even if you micromanage your own minors, the AI doesnt for the rest of your universe. In some rare cases you will have the AI burning out premier talent needlessly. And, if you do micromanage, then I assume you already do this anyway.

Oh I do, but I was just looking at the numbers above, and one of the things you were suggesting was 3 catchers for rosters above 30. I'm just imagining a scenario where I trip over that number by promoting someone and all of the sudden I've got an extra catcher and I don't know where the heck he came from. When I say I micromanage my minors, I also mean I'm anal about my minors. I don't want the AI to do anything at all with my minors, ever, pretty much.

If it was just for the AI it'd be fine, or course. Anything to help out the AI, says I.

This is where I'm at with it.

I've seen a lack of OFs in some minor league teams, with teams having 21 pitchers out of a 39 man roster. This could perhaps be fixed in a patch. Anything forced would have to be optional though.

As a matter of interest, do any leagues IRL have such limits?

No but they have sentient people running things. No sane organization would have but 1 catcher that plays every inning of every game. Thats why the AI needs the most basic of organizational templates so it more closely mirrors reality.

I'm guessing that Markus doesn't include limits because it could probably lead to more "illegal number of players on roster" bugs. Perhaps it's something that should only apply to catchers.

I occasionally also get no backups in my infield on my 50 man rookie league team. I am sure its very difficult to program to get proper squad rotation especially with injuries. I hope that a basic template will work in the meantime to get more accurate AI roster management.
