Historical League Spring Training

I'm starting up an 1871 historical game - where there is just a 30 game regular season, with each team playing every 5/6 days.

When spring training is scheduled, the teams are playing every day, and with the roster size averaging 14/15 players with just one starting pitcher, it becomes a bit of a nightmare.

If I was to disable spring training, and just play exhibition games (maybe 5/6 per team during March) would the player "rust" still come off?

Or would it be better to enable spring training, but just delete a certain amount of games?
I'd rather go down the exhibition route, as I guess that in 1871, this was the way it would have happened - but if this doesn't have any effect on "rust", then it's pointless.

Thanks.

In theory, the rust shouldn't be there with ST turned off. I've never really tested it.
